2.  CALL FOR ENTRIES -- "SCENES OF EAGLE ROCK" AND "LIVE ART' -- APPLY BY SEPTEMBER 30

The Eagle Rock Association (TERA), in conjunction with our annual Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour on Sunday, November 6, presents the "Scenes of Eagle Rock" Art Exhibit + "Live Art" participatory opportunity for all interested artists.

"Scenes of Eagle Rock" Art Exhibit

For two weeks preceding TERA's 2005 Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour, artists throughout Southern California are invited to paint, draw, photograph or otherwise portray scenes indoors or outdoors in beautiful Eagle Rock, following in the tradition of such legendary artists as Conrad Buff and Hanson Puthuff or using your unlimited imagination.  This is all part of the annual Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour on Sunday, November 6.  This exciting event attracts hundreds of visitors to our historic neighborhood every year.

Framed finished artworks will be presented as an art exhibition at the breathlessly beautiful Carlotta's Passion Fine Art gallery, which is located at 2012 Colorado Boulevard in Eagle Rock.  Scenes of Eagle Rock will be displayed on Sunday, November 6, during the Home Tour and will continue to be shown until Sunday, November 13.

All artwork entries must depict interior or exterior scenes within the community of Eagle Rock.  A list of suggested locations and picturesque sites is available upon request.  All styles and media are welcomed.  There is a limit of one submission per artist.  Mounted finished artwork must not exceed 26" in width and 32" in height and must be equipped for hanging.  Artists will receive 60% of any sales made during Scenes of Eagle Rock exhibit.  The artist's portion of the retail price cannot exceed $500.  A three-panel jury will choose work to be shown and award four certificates of merit.  The top winner's artwork will be prominently displayed in next year's Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour program, and all participating artists will receive free tickets to attend this year's Home Tour.

In addition to the above-mentioned certificates of merit, we are pleased to offer a purchase award this year.

"Live Art"

We also want to encourage artists to participate in our one-day Scenes of Eagle Rock "Live Art" on Sunday, November 6, from 10 am to 4pm during the Home Tour.  "Live Art" locations include the homes and gardens featured in the Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour or anywhere along the Home Tour route.  A list of the homes will be sent to participating artists.  The artwork produced on this day will be displayed at the volunteer appreciation party on Sunday, November 6, starting at 4:30pm at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock.

BUSINESS DIRECTOR (2 will be elected)

Hector Ponce:
I have been in Eagle rock for 35. I am in the business of Accounting, Taxes, Insurance. I like to help the business community with information, about the fiscal laws that they shall comply, to able them to function properly under the laws, like Social Security, Worker Compensation, Payroll Regulations, Immigration regulations. Some of them donıt comply because lack of information. The laws are made to protect everybody, we have good laws, and we shall support our government, and see that our Eagle Rock be consistent with the progress. I will try my best.

Leti Vandensteen: It would be an honor to be a laison between our growing business community and our ERNC board. I've been a Realtor in this community since 1990 and understand our economically diverse and growing community.  I could bring to the table a solid foundation in service, trouble shooting, and marketing.  I've consistently exceeded expectations as top producer at Dilbeck Realtors, forever!  Previously @ Harnberger Realty, now known as Camilo's.  While attending school, I owned & operated a childrens clothing store on Fig & York named Litttle Rascals.  Graduate of Cal State LA with Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. I'm looking forward in serving our community since I also live, work,& am raising my daughter here.

James Perry: Why you should VOTE for JAMES PERRY for Business Director: My objective in running for the Business Director office is to promote more public awareness of all of the businesses in the Eagle Rock area. I have over 35 years experience in local, national and international advertising/public relations including the State of Arizona and the City of Beverly Hills. (Hey, don't say you never heard of them!) Let's put EAGLE ROCK on the map in a BIG way, too. Vote for JAMES PERRY and make good things happen to your business. Endorsed by.....darned near everyone I know in Eagle Rock.

CIVIC DIRECTOR (2 will be elected)

Vince Waldron
: As anyone whoıs ever attended one of Eagle Rockıs countless public concerts, plays, talks, art exhibits, car shows or home tours is no doubt aware, our community is home to a colorful array of civic organizations who, through projects they initiate and events they sponsor, help define our neighborhoodıs unique character.  Eagle Rockıs diverse civic groups may have varied goals, but they share a common purpose: for Eagle Rock to thrive as an attractive, vibrant and historically important place in which to live, work and visit.  As Civic Director, it would be my honor to make sure Eagle Rockıs civic organizations and the many dedicated community members who support them, continue to have a vital say in the growth and development of our ever-evolving community.

Michael Nogueira: No statement available.

PUBLIC SAFETY DIRECTOR

Everett Sarabia:
I am Everett Sarabia and have been an Eagle Rock(ER) resident for 46+ years.  My goal as Public Safety(PS) Director is to better coordinate the resources we have in our community. Our organization established a Neighborhood Watch(NW) at Toland Way Elementary School, it continues to grow and thrive, and crime is down!  I plan to use our success as a model for all of ER schools. We have established a Gang Awareness Seminar at local schools.  Det. Lopez shares his experience dealing with gangs, giving our children hope and their parents tools to better cope.  PS meetings would be scheduled monthly before the NW Captainıs meeting, this will give us opportunity to corporately bring our concerns to SLO Galindo.  Join our team call (323) 254-3512.

Marlene Schmidt: As your current ERNC Public Safety Dir., Iım active in all facets of safety. Organized: Public Safety Forum, (Oxy College), National Night Out, (ER City Hall), LAFDıs CERT Emergency & CPR training classes for ER, emergency town hall meetings with LAPD (in response to ERHS/Yosemite shootings).  Secured surveillance cameras for Yosemite. Acquired Neighborhood Watch signs for all 8 districts.  Daily respond to your calls/emails about community issues, request extra patrols, lights, ³smart crosswalks² and more. Work closely with LAPD & LAFD, attend most CPAB, community & city safety meetings, committees (Homeless/Safety) & attend refresher CERT, Disaster & civilian Police Academy classes.  I will continue to fight for your safety in ER & LA.  Longtime resident of ER, Iım committed to ³safety first.²  Call 323-257-3333.

YOUTH DIRECTOR

Karl Markis
: I will represent our communityıs Youth interests and let the ERNC, City Hall and City Council know what our needs and wants are.  I will also communicate back to you their issues and important news that may affect our living.  I have been Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Indian Guide, was part of the schoolıs Tennis Team and want to study Engineering in College.  As a 16 yearsı old attending 11th Grade at Eagle Rock High School I have the well being of our Youth in mind and will fulfill my role in the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council.

Martin F. Tolosa: My name is Martin F. Tolosa and I am running for the Youth Representative position.  I have lived in Eagle Rock since I was 10 years old, and have been residing here for 12 years. I believe that I am qualified for this positions because for the past three years of my college career, I have been working with the youth of Eagle Rock High School through a UCLA based outreach project.  The project provides tutoring and peer advising for students while conducting social investigations concerning their school and home environments to ensure students are in atmospheres conducive for learning.  Currently, I do not feel that there is enough youth representation within spaces such as the neighborhood council, which is something I plan to address.

Chelsea Lynn Eckart: My name is Chelsea Eckart, Iım 19-years-old and have lived in Eagle Rock for 17 years. I Graduated from Eagle Rock High School in 2004. I am currently a student at PCC, and an employee at Vons. I belong to a non-profit service organization, called The International Order of Rainbow for Girls, and enjoy attending activities and meetings for my assembly in my spare time. Being in IORG has taught me leadership skills and helped me become more responsible. Last year I was appointed the Grand Representative to Indiana and Kentucky, which is basically a good will ambassador. I served this position all of 2004 and got to travel to many places including Colorado, Hawaii, Indiana, and Kentucky, as well as all over California.

SUB-DISTRICT ONE DIRECTOR

Steve Moore
: The preamble of the U.S. Constitution begins, "We the people" not "We the politicians." While others criticize the politicians in power, I would rather work to make a difference in my community.  My wife and I have owned  a home in Sub-District One for 11 years, and we have watched Eagle Rock grow over that period of time. Invigorated by the positive direction of the community, I will commit my time and energy to represent the concerns and opinions of my neighbors as we face new challenges. I am known on the job for my talents as a consensus builder and "getting the job done". I am currently a member of the Land Use and Planning committee, and have a perfect attendance record.

SUB-DISTRICT FOUR DIRECTOR

Herb Larrimore:
My name is Herb Larrimore and I am running for representative of Sub-District 4. I have lived in Eagle Rock for over 35 years, and in the general area for almost 50 years.  Eagle Rock has gone from a quite little town to a thriving very active smart place to be.  Three years ago I was among  members of what was than called "Scarlett's Hill",  to be included in ERNC, as our zip code was 90041. I have been active from the beginning with various ERNC committees.  Locally, I have helped to bring together people for a Neighbor Watch group. I have had several meeting at my home about general problems in the area.

SUB-DISTRICT FIVE DIRECTOR

Marina Rimer
: Hello, my name is Marina Rimer and I have lived in Eagle Rock for 7 years.  During this time I have also worked here, the last 4 years as an agent with Century 21 First.  I've gotten to know many of my neighbors, and have witnessed a dramatic change in the kinds of businesses locating here.  However, one thing that has struck me is a certain dismissive attitude towards that part of Eagle Rock that isn't "NOCO".  Aren't we all part of this wonderful community?  Don't we share many common concerns?  Since District 5 is one of the gateways into Eagle Rock, I feel it's important for us to have a voice.  I look forward to being a part of ERNC.  Thank you for voting.

Donna Tubbs: I have lived in Eagle Rock District 5 since July 1979.  I have served this community through many organizations including: PTA, Neighborhood Watch, Neighborhood Beautification, Delevan School Gardens, and as a Room Mother.  I am deeply concerned about and have worked on cleaning up graffiti, getting the city to fill pot holes, animal control of coyotes, spay and neutering of feral cats, student safety around Delevan Elementary School and have worked with local agencies to get hazardous materials removed from our neighborhood. I would like to see the Delevan Drive Science Center rebuilt, more and safer cross walks, safe streets for emergency vehicle access, cleaning and policing of dumping areas on Wawona next to the freeway and a community park.

Steven Fiorillo: I am a candidate for director sub-district five.  I am a teacher at Delevan Drive Elementary School in sub-district five.  My school is located at the intersection of the 2 freeway and York Blvd where a freeway on-ramp passes directly in front of our school entrance. Traffic is especially high during the morning and afternoon hours when our students arrive and depart from school.  The safety of our students and staff members is at risk.  On a number of occasions we have had close calls when commuters rushing to get to work have nearly hit students or staff members in front of our school. If elected to ERNC I hope to have more influence with our city councilman to get something done for our kids.

SUB-DISTRICT SEVEN DIRECTOR

Suzanne Luke:
My husband and I purchased our house on Mt. Royal two years ago and have worked to make it as beautiful as it once was.  We love our street, our neighbors and are excited to be part of the Eagle Rock community.  Our son was so excited to be here he was born unexpectedly at our home on our bed and delivered by my unflappable husband!  I am concerned about traffic, parking, neighborhood beautification projects and tree planting.  I would like to do my part to contribute and help shepherd Eagle Rockıs growth so that its beauty is maintained while businesses flourish. I want to make our neighborhood as safe and lovely as it can be for all of us and for our children.

SUB-DISTRICT EIGHT DIRECTOR

Vincent Antonino
: As a homeowner in Eagle rock since 1996, I am interested in running for the neighborhood council and to have input into issues that impact our community. Of immediate concern to me is the disturbing increase of transients loitering in our neighborhood.  There may be a correlation between this and the increase in burglaries in our community.  The safety of our children, senior citizens, and property are at risk if we donıt pay attention to who is roaming our streets and acknowledge the significant difference between the homeless and transients inhabitants.  There are also significant health risks when our park is used as a public restroom. I hope to alleviate some of these issues and maintain the quality of our community.

Jim Rhyne: (withdrawn)

9.  LETTERS AND E.MAILS

"Thanks for the very timely emergency supplies list!  Sincerely --"

-- Lucy Cole, Eagle Rock resident and TERA member

"Dear Michael,

As you may know, it was I who first proposed the creation of a standardized community name sign for the neighborhoods of the City of Los Angeles, and approved its design.  The first ones were installed at the borders of Eagle Rock, Highland Park, Mount Washington, Glassell Park, Cypress Park, Lincoln Heights, El Sereno, Atwater, North Atwater, and Elysian Valley -- which were at that time the northeast communities of the 14th District.  Now they have become ubiquitous through Los Angeles.

Anyway, I did so because I knew that the loyalty of man is like the heat of the sun--it diminishes as it moves from its origin.  While it is possible to develop some level of pride (or disgust) in the giant Los Angeles, it is not possible to generate a great deal of loyalty, interest, or participation in such a huge entity.

I say this because at the same time I organized community associations in Atwater, Elysian Valley, and Glassell Park that continue in existence today.  The Eagle Rock Community Association, along with the Cypress Park Association, withered and died after a few years of arteriosclerosis.  At that time I held up the Los Feliz Improvement Association as the example to each of them, and that association cooperated actively in my efforts at community organization.

Well, that's all history, and should be treated as such -- to learn from but not necessarily follow.  All of this leads up to this:

You and the other leaders of TERA have every right to be proud of what has been done in its name in these past few years.  In fact, everyone who lives or has property or a business in Eagle Rock have the same right to be proud.  From my some 46 years of observing organizations seeking to represent communities, I have never seen one work for the good of its people so effectively as TERA.

If I could still give out plaques and resolutions, TERA would certainly be the recipient of one -- the biggest one that I could give.  To you and all others who have made this happen, from one multi-generational Eagle Rock resident: Many, many thanks!"

-- Art Snyder, former Council member, CD 14, Eagle Rock resident, and TERA member

"Dear Art:

Thank you very much for the kind words.  I think TERA's strength lies in its membership, giving it a strong base upon which to build for the future.  TERA has been blessed to have a leadership corps which has evolved with the membership.  My way has been made easier by the hard work of Kathleen Aberman, Tim Sanders, Joanne Turner, Hilary Norton Orozco, and Kathleen Long, as well as the entire TERA Board.  But always it has been TERA's linking back to its base, the residents of Eagle Rock, that has made it ever stronger.  It has been my pleasure and good fortune to be the beneficiary of your good counsel over the years.  And I shall enjoy watching Eagle Rock continue to grow ever stronger thanks to the members of the community in which we live.  Best,"

-- Michael Tharp, President, The Eagle Rock Association (TERA)
