1.  CULTURAL CENTER ART EXHIBIT -- "WOMEN'S WORK" -- OPENING RECEPTION AUGUST 11

Women in Design Los Angeles and The Eagle Rock Community Cultural Association are proud to announce "Women's Work," a juried art exhibition at the Gallery at the Eagle Rock Community Cultural Center, 2225 Colorado Boulevard in Eagle Rock, showing August 1 through August 31.  Opening reception will be this Saturday, August 11, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This exhibit will provide a forum for works exploring the myriad roles women play in the challenging realm of the visual communication arts.  As women artists and designers, business owners and activists, "Women's Work" will showcase dynamic works embracing women's lives, women's art, women's work.

Many Eagle Rock and Northeast Los Angeles women artists will be showing their work, and therefore showing their true selves, including long-time, well-known community activist and business owner Linda Allen; her very vibrant, talented, and painterly daughters Candace and Mindy Allen; Patricia Neal, photographer and owner of swank coffeehouse Swork; Anne Richardson-Daniel, graphic designer and involved parent at Eagle Rock Elementary; and my own illustrator self, among others.

I'll bet many of you thought I was only a proud TERA-ist -- well, remember what my dear friend Phil Barbaro once so succinctly said: "If you want to get something done, put the artists in charge."

We hope to see you at the opening this Saturday, August 11, starting at 2:00 p.m.  Feel free to wander in any time between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m.  If I know the elves responsible for setting up this event as well as I think I do, it is guaranteed to be great.

Please come and see what we women are truly capable of.

5.  A NOTE FROM CULTURAL HERITAGE COMMISSIONER KAYE BECKHAM

In regards to the "Shopping Bag Building" issue, Cultural Heritage Commissioner Kaye Beckham writes:

"Hilary Norton Orozco and Michael Southard presented me with flowers after the committee meeting 8/1/01 as a thank you for the Cultural Heritage Commission taking the 'Shopping Bag Building' under consideration.

I thanked them at the time and told them I could not accept their lovely gift due to the City Ethics Commission policies.  Hilary stated yes, you can, they are not from a group, they are from us, and Michael agreed.  The card was signed from 'Hilary and Michael.'  In this awkward situation and the commotion of everyone leaving the meeting, I accepted the flowers.

Today I spoke with a representative from the City Ethics Commission.  In the best interest of my commission and the community, the flowers will go to Solheim Lutheran Home today -- a non-profit organization.  Please note that regardless of who the gift was from, it was not appropriate for me to accept it.

I thank Hilary and Michael for their unnecessary, but kind, gesture."

Speaking of beautification, this is in from gardening guru Glen Dake:

Gardeners:

We're gonna be on TV -- see press release below for Dan Tripoli's LA Community Gardening movie.  I saw it at the Film Festival last month and it was captivating (of course: Helen Johnson is in it).

8.  MORE LOCAL FAST FOOD (BUT IT'S IN GLENDALE)

This in from friend and, apparently, In & Out Burger fan Phil Barbaro (wow, twice quoted in one e.letter!):

"Yesterday I drove by the Rusty Pelican and noticed construction in progress.  It turns out that they are building an In & Out Burger.  It's a perfect location, Glendale, but I'm sure traffic will get dicey at times on Harvey Drive.  I'm glad they are now close by, but not too close."

9.  LETTERS AND E.MAILS

"It's nice to see your years of hard work get this kind of public validation. It was painfully instructive to read the short history of all the sins committed by the city and elected officials against the citizenry of Eagle Rock (are some of those people in jail?) but let's hope we learn from the past.  The article itself was proof the tide has turned.  Best regards."

-- Sean Mitchell, relatively new Eagle Rock resident and devotee, TERA member, owner of the fabulous Spanish Colonial revival home on TERA's Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour 2001, and writer whose perspective on Eagle Rock we'd love to see in print . . . somewhere . . . anywhere

"BRAVA!"

-- John Gallogly, Highland Park resident and manager, Theatre West

"My boys were excited when I told them Mrs. Turner's picture was in the paper [we have kids at the same schools and have been on some of the same really cool field trips].  My family and I got a real kick out of Eagle Rock being in the Sunday Times."

-- Norma Gonzalez, Eagle Rock resident, TERA member, and great fun to go on really cool field trips with

"The word is out, and now we're really in for it!  I've already received calls from former Eagle Rockers living all over the country, and there are some homesick people out there!"

-- Jeff Samudio, hard-working and gifted architect, life-long Eagle Rock resident and founding TERA Board member

"You've done a tremendous and an excellent and a good job of raising your community's consciousness about their potential impact on their own environment, and this media coverage has done you a great service by airing the fact that there are people in Eagle Rock who are ready, willing, and able to dialogue about the needs and future direction of the community.  Kudos to you!"

-- Ellen Rissman-Wong, fellow Scrippsie with whom I've just recently gotten back in touch after 20-something years

"It will be great if we can get help.  I was wondering if there is any type of grants or support for businesses on Colorado.  We want to make our business as beautiful as we can but, money is a great issue.  We need lots of help.  We are surviving working many hours.  I would really be thankful if TERA can help us make a change for the better.  Thank you."

-- Rolando Quintero, owner, Cycle Depot

"Terrific coverage.  Congratulations!  Thank you for all you do.  Best --"

-- Carl Johnson, UGLA President, and Carl Matthes, Eagle Rock residents and TERA Members
