The TERA Board extends its deepest sympathy to Kathleen Long, longtime
TERA Board member, and her husband, John LeBlanc, on the death of their
daughter, Jacqueline.
The hour is late and a lot is going on in Eagle Rock this week so I
shall try to be brief. There is a community clean-up scheduled for this
Saturday morning. Everyone should meet at Eagle Rock City Hall, at 2035
Colorado Boulevard at 9:00 a.m. We will work until about noon and then
Councilmember Huizar has said that there will be food and refreshments. A
few hours out of the weekend spent with your neighbors to make the place
we live and work a little better doesn’t seem like too much to ask.
I attended a meeting with Councilmember Huizar on Wednesday night,
along with representatives from the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council, the
Collaborative Eagle Rock Beautiful, Occidental College, The Center for the
Arts Eagle Rock, and ERCPR. The Councilmember discussed his contribution
of $10,000 to the 20th Century Women’s Club, future plans (next year) to
have stage lights for the Concerts in the Park, and the installation of
security cameras on Eagle Rock and Colorado Boulevards. He also stated
that he is working to find an alternative and more appropriate location
for the International Charter School, which has received so much recent
publicity about their plans to move into the Farley Building, located at
Colorado Boulevard and Mount Royal Drive. He also mentioned that there was
work afoot to get lights for the football field at Eagle Rock High School
so that night games could be played, but was cautioned by those present
that such a step would be controversial in the surrounding neighborhood.
And the Councilman said that graffiti complaints could be dealt with much
faster by calling them into his Eagle Rock office directly. Such
complaints are normally are dealt with in 24 - 48 hours when they are
called in to 311. They are dealt with in less than 24 hours when they are
called directly into the Council office. That number is 323- 254-5295.
The Councilmember asked for input on other issues. I told him that TERA
is continuing to work on the issue of inappropriate use of single family
dwellings as business enterprises and boarding houses and asked for his
support in dealing with those issues. High on TERA’s list this year is the
continuing revitalization of Eagle Rock Boulevard, especially now that the
road construction and sewer replacement project are winding up. We are
also looking for support on the second phase of the Eagle Rockdale
Community Garden, which will require bench placement and additional art
work, as well as more planting beds.
It was the first such meeting and there was a good deal of input and
information traded. The intent is to hold at least one meeting a quarter
with representatives from the various community groups.
Other things happening in the neighborhood:
The new restaurant, The Oinkster, located at the site of the former
Jim’s Burgers on Colorado Boulevard, hopes to be opening soon. They have
applied for a CUP for the sale of beer and wine and the remodeling of the
building and patio is starting to look very complete.
For those of you who have been wondering, the Minx restaurant, former
home of the Rusty Pelican, nearby in Glendale, has opened and a review
from the Los Angeles Times is below. Of course, with all of the great
places open and opening in Eagle Rock, it might be hard to go as far away
as Glendale just to try a new restaurant.
Another date to hold is September 26, 2006 when, at 7:00 p.m. at the
Center for the Arts Eagle Rock when Councilmember Jose Huizar will give
his “State of the Town” report and answer questions at TERA’s next public
meeting.
Remember that the Eagle Rock Music Festival will be coming up in
October. This year it will be a huge street party with great music and
entertainment. This will be followed shortly thereafter by TERA’s own
Eclectic Home Tour on Sunday, October 15th. This year features a great mix
of mid-century homes and homes from the 1920's in the southeast quadrant
of Eagle Rock. To volunteer, see the information below. This is one of
Eagle Rock’s most fun and popular events, and following on the heels of
the Music Festival should make for lots of chances to meet and greet your
neighbors on the streets and sidewalks of Eagle Rock.
Under the theme of “advanced notice” Jessica Wethington McLean,
Subdistrict 2 Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council Director, advises that the
Outreach Committee of the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council is planning a
parade on Eagle Rock Boulevard on November 11th.
And Jim Tranquada from Occidental College has been making the rounds to
various community meetings to present and discuss the college’s work on a
master plan for the college. The new dorm is currently under construction
and preparation of an environmental impact report is now underway for the
complete master plan. While no increase in the size of the student body is
planned, the master plan will focus on remodeling and adding buildings
that are more along the lines and design of architect Myron Hunt, who
originally designed much of the existing campus and on making the campus
more accommodating to pedestrian traffic. We will invite Occidental to
present its plans at one of our public meetings once the EIR is completed
and plans have finalized a bit more.
Carol and I will be working on the clean-up this Saturday morning and
hope you will join us.
 Michael Tharp,
President

Join Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa in the 225th Birthday Celebration of
the City of Los Angeles on Monday, September 4, 2006!
September 4th, 2006 is the 225th Birthday of the City of Los Angeles.
To celebrate, the City has planned a series of exciting events for you to
take part in marking this historic day.
During the first week of September 1781, eleven families left Mission
San Gabriel and proceeded nine miles down a dusty trail to the river.
There, on September 4, 1781, they established El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora
la Reina de Los Angeles - today, the great City of Los Angeles.
Each year since our Bicentennial in 1981, walkers representing a broad
cross section of our city’s diverse cultures have re-enacted the original
founding with the Pobladores walk to Los Angeles. This year we will carry
on the tradition with a full program of activities. At 7:00 a.m., we will
begin the celebration with a program and kick-off rally at the San Gabriel
Mission.Participants will then walk nine miles to the El Pueblo Historical
Monument in downtown Los Angeles. After the walk, the festivities will
continue with a cake ceremony, food, a program with multi cultural
entertainment, and a Children’s Fun Zone sponsored by Disney and the
Department of Recreation and Parks. It will truly be an event to remember!
Here’s the Schedule:
- 7:00 a.m. Pobladores Walk, 9 miles. Kick off rally at San Gabriel
Mission. 428 South Mission Drive, San Gabriel. (Shuttle to Mission
available.)
- 9:00 a.m. Lincoln Park, 3 miles. Join the walkers from the Mission at
the second starting point of the Walk. 3501 Valley Blvd., Los Angeles.
- 10:30 a.m. Birthday Cake Ceremony & Festival at El Pueblo
Historical Monument. 125 Paseo de la Plaza, Los Angeles. (Shuttle back to
Mission available.)

WOMEN ARTISTS SHARE VISIONS OF FEMINISM |

the spectrum in all its brilliance and subtlety. The exhibit, "The Women's

The participants in the exhibition span generations, cultures, and

"Le Deuxieme
Sexe?" Exhibit at Carlotta's Passion Fine Art |
 |
"Le Deuxieme Sexe?": All-Women Artist Exhibit at Carlotta’s Passion
Fine Art, September 9th - September 24th
Carlotta’s Passion Fine Art is pleased to present Le Deuxieme Sexe?, an
all-women artist exhibit from September 9th to September 24th. The
artist’s reception is Saturday, September 9th, from 7:00 p.m. -10:00 p.m.
The exhibit includes works by Diane Gamboa, Margaret Garcia, Linda
Arreola, Mari Cardenas, Judith Duran, Simone Gad, CiCi Gonzalez, Fei Lu,
Poli Marichal, Isabel Martinez, Lucia Maya, and Audri Phillips, each a
powerhouse in her own right.
The artwork is as diverse as the worlds of the artists are unique. Gad
and Gamboa share bold personal expressions with strong touches of pattern
and design. Garcia graciously defines herself and her community while
Gonzalez presents both narrative figuration and gravity-free abstraction.
Arreola combines social commentary with spiritual awareness. The potent
works of Marichal and Lu also address vital issues of the day. Both are
influenced by their families. Marichal’s father having been a Spanish
Civil refugee and Puerto Rico's most famous theatrical scene designer and
Lu’s grandfather a famous Chinese propaganda artist during the reign of
Mao Zedong.
Maya is a brilliant Mexican lithographer whose work is heavily
influenced by dream structuring. Similarly, Phillips produces
dreamscape-like oeuvres "where the outer continues into the inner, the
visible into the invisible.”
From September 10th until September 24, Carlotta’s Passion Fine Art is
also offering an all- women writers series. Both the writers and the dates
on which they will read are soon to be announced.
The opening, the exhibit, and the writers series are all free of
charge. We look forward to seeing you!
Carlotta’s Passion Fine Art is located at 2012 Colorado Blvd., Los
Angeles (Eagle Rock), CA, 90041. The cross street is Maywood. Hours:

In season at
the Highland Park Farmers Market |
 |
As everyone knows, late summer is the height of tomato season and
visitors to the market in the last few weeks have been blessed with a
wonderful selection of fruit. Tamai farms in Oxnard has been bringing
fantastic heirloom, beefsteak, cherry and plum tomatoes to the market. The
heat this summer has not been kind to tomatoes, as most home gardeners
know, but Tamai's location allows their plants to benefit from cool ocean
breezes, resulting in a top quality crop this year. The same microclimate
is what allows them to grow strawberries year round, with the popular
Camarosa variety currently on sale at the market.
Any chef visiting the market these days is likely to splurge on
tomatoes, filling your counter space and challenging you to come up with
ways to use them. Well what could be better on these hot summer days than
a delicious bowl of chilled gazpacho served with some crusty bread? With a
delicious peach or nectarine for dessert, it makes for a perfect light and
healthy dinner. Here's a great gazpacho recipe that I've been using. Peel
and core 2 1/2 lbs (about 8 medium) tomatoes (peel tomatoes by first
dipping them briefly in boiling water). Puree the tomatoes in a food
processor along with 1/2 cup bread (crust removed), 1/2 cup olive oil, 2
tbsp sherry (red wine) vinegar, 2 cloves chopped garlic, 1 tsp sugar, 2
tsp salt and 1/2 tsp cumin. Pour the soup into a bowl and refrigerate for
at least 1 hour. Using bread to thicken the soup may surprise you, but
it's a traditional Spanish way of using up leftovers. I've been using
Trader Joe's baguettes for this recipe which work wonderfully.
Besides tomatoes, the market has been overflowing with delicious stone
fruits, sweet corn, summer squashes and too much else to list here. Take a
look at www.its.
caltech.edu/~sbudick to get a comprehensive (to the best of my
abilities) list of what's currently in season at the market. As always,
delicious dinner fare including rotisseried chicken, roasted corn, baked
potatoes and yams, tamales and other items are also available in case you
can't wait to get home and start cooking with all your farmers market
finds.
Please stop by the market for fresh, field- ripened, high quality
produce from local farmers and spend time with your friends, neighbors and
other community members.
The Highland Park Certified Farmers Market is located adjacent to the
Highland Park Gold Line station at Marmion Way between Ave. 57 & 58
and operates Tuesdays from 3-8 p.m.
Visit the market website at http://www.oldla.org.
Also visit http://w

LETTERS |

Dear Michael,
Thank you for reminding us all to be careful on the streets.
Pedestrians and drivers alike need to be alert. As you pointed out, cars
are huge, heavy objects and can be lethal even at moderate speeds. My
heart goes out to everyone involved in this tragedy. I can't tell you
enough how important I think this issue is or how much I appreciate the
tactful, non-judgmental way that you addressed the situation.
Thank you for helping to change our little corner of the world: Eagle
Rock.
Gwen Everman
-----------------------------
Death in Eagle Rock
Michael - The tragic accident on Colorado Blvd described in the Aug 18
e.letter was news to me, and sobering news, at that. We can certainly all
do better to slow down, pay attention, and generally "be where we are,"
instead of somewhere off in our own heads.
There seems to be a theme of death and automobiles in Eagle Rock, with
this and the horrible death that occurred somewhere between Vincent and
Loleta Aves late Tuesday. Living on Vincent as we do, it has been quite
traumatic watching the real life episode of CSI unfold across the street.
There's still so much that isn't clear about what happened, so I'm not
sure what lessons there are in this, if any. Maybe it's that we might do
more to get to know our neighbors. If this was, as it appears to have
been, a crime of passion, were there signs of things to come we might have
seen if we'd reached out a little more?
I do my best not to dwell on the past or carry guilt about what might
have been. At the same time, I do wonder if slowing down - in our cars, in
our lives, and in general - to take a bit more notice of those around us
might make us all a little safer.
Michael Blanchard
mlblanchard@sbcglobal.net

Michael
I think your letter is right on target and even more so given the
tragic events that occured this week on Vincent. What I love about this
area is its friendly and peaceful nature. I now feel as if this has been
taken away from us and am reminded of this each time I drive up Vincent
and Hill drive. I wonder how others in our community would feel about some
kind of event that serves as a memorial for the victim and a purfication
of sorts for the surrounding area. I'd love to know what others think.
