1.  TERA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE -- MICHAEL THARP

TERAıs Candidate "Meet and Greet" Public Meeting is going to be held on Tuesday, September 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the Eagle Rock Center for the Arts.  All of the candidates who are running for the vacated 14th Council District seat have been invited, and if they are serious about being elected we expect them to show up.  I want to thank all of the candidates who have chosen to run.  Itıs a difficult thing to do to, usually involving personal sacrifice, spending time away from family and friends, making tough choices between legitimate, competing interests, and developing a thick skin to deflect the barbs hurled by the informed and uninformed alike about not only policy choices, but personal choices as well.  Not many of us choose to enter that arena, and we should be thankful that there are good people who are willing to do so.

That being said, it is my hope that all of you who are concerned with the future of our community and City will show up on Tuesday, September 6, to talk to the candidates and look them in the eye when they answer your questions and tell you of their vision for CD 14.  This event is different than a debate between two of the candidates.  Both types of events are valuable tools to help you learn about the candidates and where they stand, but the "meet and greet" format provides an opportunity to walk up to the candidate and say, "Ruby, Nick says he disagrees with Brian on this issue and I want to know what you think and what you would do."  And at the end of the evening, you can walk away saying, "This is what he or she said to me," not "This is what he or she said to a moderator in a room full of hundreds of people."

There are winds of change blowing throughout the Los Angeles political hierarchy, and who we elect to represent us on the City Council becomes more important than ever.  The imposition of term limits, for better or worse, give those elected to the City Council precious little time to learn how to be effective in representing their districts.  At the August TERA Public Meeting, City Controller Laura Chick said she thought that it was time to focus more of the Cityıs resources on the areas that really needed the most help.  This is a substantial change in the way things are currently divided equally between the 15 Council Districts, and Iıd like to know how the candidates for the council seat feel about that idea.

Iıve had several candidates tell me about all of the great things they are going to do to make things better for the schools in Los Angeles.  I think our education system and its success or failure is one of the most important issues facing Los Angeles today.  I also know that the Los Angeles City Charter doesnıt give a City Council member any authority over the Los Angeles Unified School District.  So Iıd like to know what those candidates really intend to do that will make the schools better and, if thatıs their primary interest, why they are not working with the Los Angeles Unified School District and our own elected representative to the School District right now to improve things.  I suspect there are more effective avenues to improving things at LAUSD than running for City Council, and Iıd like to hear what the candidates have to say.  I hope you do too!

There are lots of issues in Northeast Los Angeles and in Eagle Rock to occupy a full-time Council memberıs attention.  There are issues regarding the Southwest Museum and the Museum of the West (the Autry Museum to us old folks); business retention and development issues; not so simple but basic issues like making sure there is enough parking for redeveloping business areas along Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevards; whether or not to create historic preservation overlay zone(s) in some of Eagle Rockıs older areas; and, the always-ubiquitous issues of crime, gangs and violence.

There are just a ton of things that people in Council District 14 need answers about, and the great thing is that they are going to have the opportunity to ask those questions and get answers at the TERA public meeting on September 6, at 7:00 p.m.  Iıll look forward to seeing you there and hearing what our community has to ask and what the candidates have to say.

2.  TERA'S COUNCIL CANDIDATE "MEET AND GREET" -- SEPTEMBER 6

If you've traveled west on the 134 freeway approaching Glendale in the late afternoon when the breezes are up, you've seen the Eagle Rock flag flying proudly alongside the California and United States flags on the Rusty Pelican property.  Our flag-raising event on Flag Day, June 14, was wonderful to behold!

Well, now you can have your own version of the Eagle Rock flag.  The flag comes in two sizes:  a small version in 4" x 6" for $5.41, or a larger version (to fly in front of your home, for example) in 3' x 5' for $54.13.  Both prices include sales tax.
