HOPE EVERYONE HAD A HAPPY & SAFE 4TH OF JULY. Given the fire
danger, there sure were a lot of incendiary devices throwing sparks in the
air. Change, along with sparks, continues in the wind for Eagle Rock. It
looks like construction is finally beginning on the live/work lofts
approved what seems like so long ago on Colorado Boulevard near Linda
Rosa. My recollection is that the tentative map (subdivision) for this
property allowed 17 live/work condominiums. The "for sale" sign has
reappeared on the SW Hills Western Store, also in that same area of
Colorado Boulevard. In addition, Carlotta's Passion is announcing it final
sale below. Planning and Land Use issues top the list of concerns cited by
Neighborhood Councils throughout Los Angeles. Listed under Planning,
Preservation and Development below are some items which may be of interest
or concern to local stake holders.

OCCIDENTAL CHILDREN'S THEATER TO LAUNCH SUMMER SEASON JULY
5
The critically acclaimed Occidental Children's Theater will present
"The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Rogers," an original story, plus
three adaptations of traditional folktales for a seven-week outdoor run in
the Remsen Bird Hillside Theater on the Occidental campus.
In about an hour, a cast of six students and recent Occidental alumni
will perform four energetic and funny stories without props, sets or
special costumes, relying only on their acting and acrobatic skills. "The
cast carries it off with the unflagging charm that has made this reliable
company one of the Southland's - and the summer's - most entertaining
children's theater offerings," says the Los Angeles Times.
The scripts and the action for the tales are company-created and the
result of weeks of improvisation and revision. The three traditional
stories, which are yet to be chosen, will be the troupe's versions of
existing folk tales from around the world. The title story was developed
by actors and Jamie Angell, the theater's founding artistic director.
"We work in the round, so the audience is right on top of the action,"
Angell says. "The unconventional material and the absence of props or
costumes force both the actors and the audience to rely on their
imaginations. It's remarkably different from most anything else you see in
children's theater today."
Beginning July 5, "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Rogers"
will be performed in the Hillside Theater at 10 a.m. every Thursday,
Friday and Saturday through Aug. 18. Tickets are $9 for adults and $6 for
children ages 2 through 12. Group rates are available.

UNIFORMED MEN ROB ELDERLY WOMAN IN EAGLE ROCK The following information
was reported by an Eagle Rock resident who lives near Eagle Rock Blvd and
Ridgeview Avenue. On Thursday, June 28, two men dressed in full
professional uniform came to the door of an 80-year-old woman who was home
alone. The men told her they needed to check the meter. The woman let them
into the house. They did not harm the woman but they took everything and
anything they could. Another neighbor living on the same street reported
that those same men knocked on her door earlier that day but she did not
let them in. This is yet another reminder that neighbors need to be
vigilant and report any suspicious activity in the neighborhood. If you
see someone you consider suspicious, call LAPD 911 immediately. It is a
good idea to write down a license plate number and a description of the
person or persons.

Subject: Smokey Robinson
Michael:
Your reference to Smokey Robinson at the top of the last newsletter
caught my eye, particularly since Mr. Robinson was in Eagle Rock just a
few weeks ago. He came to Occidental's commencement ceremony on May 20 to
see his old friend and colleague Berry Gordy receive an honorary degree.
The story and photos are here:

Thanks Jim. Sorry I missed it. Smokey Robinson has long been a
favorite of mine and Berry Gordy certainly shaped the music of an era.
