My compliments to the care-takers of our local
parks in Eagle Rock. We frequent both Eagle Rock
and Yosemite Parks in the course of walking the Boyz
and Girl (Madison Dawg, the Bandit, Mickey, and Ms.
Clifford) and we’ve observed an interesting pattern.
By Friday morning, the parks are in great shape.
Lawns are trimmed, trash has been disposed of, ball
diamonds are groomed and ready for the weekend
games. And when we walk on Monday morning,
there is litter everywhere, and taggers have left their
marks on everything from walkways, to trees, to
restrooms. And then the process starts again. For
me it would be discouraging, but the park workers we
meet in the early hours of the day are friendly,
courteous, and stop working only to wave and
exchange greetings with us.
Tagging in the parks has been a serious issue
over the last few weeks. Thanks to quick action by
City crews, it has been painted out within a few
days, but there has been so much of it lately that I
don’t see how the crews will be able to keep up with
it. But I really appreciate their efforts in trying.
Almost equally irritating as the taggers are the
sales calls and phone solicitations that inevitably
come at dinner time. I’m not sure how they know,
given that dinner time in our household is anywhere
from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. but they always seem
to find the wrong time. We have signed up on
every “don’t call list” available, but still the calls
persist. I’m waiting for some enterprising techie to
invent a device for my phone where I can press
#6666 and it sends a scramble signal into the phone
system of the offending caller, disabling the entire
phone bank from which they are calling. Of course,
we wish no harm to the callers, who are simply trying
to earn a few dollars, but disabling the hardware has
a lot of appeal. It would be great to be able to fight
back. Michael Tharp, President

ROCKDALE ELEMENTARY KIDS SEE THEIR WORK
IN PRINT IN THE LA TIMES.
Four Eagle Rock fifth and sixth graders saw their
words printed in an early summer edition of The Kids’
Reading Room section of the Los Angeles Times
Calendar section. The paper's kids’ page invited
young readers to make up and submit fantasy
newspaper headlines they'd like to see, and explain
why. The most interesting entries were compiled and
printed on The Kids’ Reading Room page in the
paper's June 29 edition, and the contributions from
the four youngsters from Eagle Rock led the page.
The kids, identified only by their first names as
Andrew, John, Cody and Antonio, were all enrolled at
Rockdale Elementary -- Eagle Rock's Bravo Award
winning school on Yosemite Drive -- and all were
members of Wordsmiths, an after school writers
workshop run by local author and playwright Vince
Waldron (who is also an ERNC Civic Director).
Here are the contributions of the Rockdale kids in
response to the question:
What newspaper headline would you write?
"It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Superman,"
because it shows there really are superheroes.
--Andrew, 11
"Inventor patents first hover car," then my family
could buy a hover car that would be easy to use and
cool to ride. --John, 11
"Greek god Cerberus becomes dog of Eagle Rock
fifth grader," because if I had any problems, he would
stick up for me. --Cody, 11
"Kid named Antonio patents magnet shoe;
increases maximum speed on foot from 15 mph to
50," because I wouldn't need to buy a car or spend
money on oil or gas. --Antonio, fifth grade
Congratulations to Andrew, John, Cody and
Antonio--Eagle Rock's newest published writers!

HOLY NUPTIALS, A SURVEY OF ARTWORK BASED
ON THE THEME OF MARRIAGE OPENS JULY 8 at
AVENUE 50 STUDIO.
Avenue 50 Studio in Highland Park presents its
new
exhibit, “Holy Nuptials” featuring art that speaks to
the institution of marriage and spectacle of
weddings. A loaded and contradictory subject, “Holy
Nuptials” promises to be an irreverent, romantic,
heartfelt, scary, unsettling and/or strange exhibit.
The artists invited to participate bring to the subject
of marriage and weddings their personal beliefs be
they married artists, thrice married, divorced, or
single. This show runs through August 6, 2006.
"The show came about because of my recurring
images having to do with weddings and receptions. I
wanted to see what artist's take on the marriage
theme would be. Some of the artists happen to be
happily married, some divorced, single, others
indifferent and some, like myself, riveted by the
spectacle some weddings can be. The show will be
an objective, romantic, sarcastic
and strange look at why marriage matters or doesn't
and how it defines, confines, fulfills, strangles,
enables, empowers and liberates those who practice
it." Guest curator José Lozano.
Please join us as we wed fine art with the
question of marriage.
