OF THE WEEK -- GREEN DAY
1. ACTION IS NEEDED NOW TO SAVE THE SOUTHWEST MUSEUM! -- TONIGHT --
JULY 28
The Friends of the Southwest Museum Coalition -- an
umbrella group representing over 70 community, arts and Native American
organizations -- will brief its membership and the broader community on the
status of negotiations with the Southwest's owners, 7pm-9PM on Thursday, July 28
at Ramona Hall, 4580 North Figueroa Street, Los Angeles 90042.
Tonight, Thursday, July 28
7:00 p.m.
Ramona Hall
4580
N. Figueroa Street
Highland Park
As the removal of
its priceless collection shifts into high gear, the Southwest Museum has arrived
at a critical juncture in its near-century-long history. Officials of its
new owner-managers, the Autry National Center, have refused to agree to provide
a binding agreement to continue operating Los Angeles' oldest museum. They
have hired attorneys to fight the community's efforts and have turned down
requests for meetings with the Coalition and our elected
officials.
Come join us tonight, July 28, for a presentation regarding
the status of negotiations, a briefing by representatives from Council Districts
1 and 14 and a discussion of next steps.
2. HISTORICAL PRESERVATION OVERLAY SURVEY -- SHARE YOUR VIEWS NOW
THROUGH JULY 31
The Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council's Land Use
and Planning Committee is interested in learning your views on historic
preservation and Historical Preservation Overlay Zones and has designed a survey
about this issue. The survey should take approximately 5 to 10 minutes to
complete. The survey will be available through July 31, 2005 and can be
accessed by clicking on the following link:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=173241187090
Your
input and feedback will be very valuable when the committee considers future
land use and planning issues that involve historical preservation.
Please take a few minutes to make your voice heard on this important
issue.
3. NATIONAL NIGHT OUT -- AUGUST 2

8. CITY CONTROLLER LAURA CHICK TO SPEAK AT TERA PUBLIC MEETING --
AUGUST 9
Be sure to hold the evening of August 9 and plan
to attend TERAšs public meeting. Laura Chick, Los Angeles City Controller,
will be in attendance and will speak at the meeting.
Laura Chick is the
17th Controller of the City of Los Angeles, having been re-elected on March 8,
2005, with 82% of the vote. Laura has lived in Los Angeles since 1952 and
is the first and only woman in the history of Los Angeles to hold citywide
office.
As Controller, she is the chief auditor and accountant for the
City of Los Angeles. Her responsibilities include conducting financial and
performance audits of all aspects of City operations, supervising expenditures,
including payroll and accounts payable, and issuing various financial reports.
A recent Los Angeles Business Journal feature said, "Los Angeles
City Controller Laura Chick has emerged as a central voice in the ongoing debate
over how the city handles its contracts." As the May 2004 Los Angeles
Magazine states, "Where others couch and evade, she is Ms. Blunt." It
should be an entertaining and informative evening.*
Ms. Chick will speak
for about 20 minutes and then will take questions from the audience.
*Information taken from City of Los Angeles Office of the City
Controller web site.

11. CORRECTION -- SORT OF -- DOG PARK NAME
Hermon Dog
Park. Hermon Dog Park in the Arroyo Seco. Hermon Park in the Arroyo
Seco Dog Park. Arroyo Seco Dog Park. It could be any one of 'em.
We don't know, because apparently there is a misunderstanding about what
the official name is.
All we know is that it definitely is NOT CD 14 Dog
Park (our mistake -- sorry). If anyone knows the real, official name,
please e.mail us, and we'd be happy to spread the good word.
Thanks.
In the meantime, bring your dog to the pooch park located
at 5568 Via Marisol, Los Angeles, 90042. Come meet your neighbors
and their dogs, and see if they look alike.
12. LETTERS AND E.MAILS
"I've changed my e.mail
address. I look forward to receiving the marvelous e.mails from TERA.
By the way, I do pass along pertinent information to non-Eagle Rock folk.
After all, why should Eagle Rock and all its fun stuff remain a secret?
Thank you for providing a truly fantastic resource!"

Garcia, ERHS Class of Summer 1970, ERHS Alumni Association President Emeritus,
and TERA member
13. QUOTE OF THE WEEK -- GREEN DAY
For Hilary, in
memory of her sister-in-law, Patricia Stresino Orozco:
"Another turning
point, a fork stuck in the road. Time grabs you by the wrist; directs you
where to go. So make the best of this test and don't ask why. It's
not a question but a lesson learned in time. It's something unpredictable,
but in the end is right. I hope you had the time of your life."
