I've been TERA president for one day and boy this job will be easier
than I thought if all the days go like my first. Oh how great it is to
dream!
First, I'd like to thank Michael Tharp for the two wonderful years he
gave to Eagle Rock as president of TERA. His kindness, amazing knowledge
of the community, sense of humor, and big heart have made a tremendous
difference to our town. Thanks Michael, you are a great inspiration to us
all.
Although I've met many of you, I still have a great many more of you to
meet, so I'll just share a few things about me. I've lived in Eagle Rock
seven years but as a child I used to ride my bike from Pasadena to the
Eagle Rock Mall, to lunch at Cindy's and to bowl at the All Star Lanes.
Those childhood friends are still my friends today. I've never lived
further than a ten mile radius from my first home in this country. Why
stay so close? Because I've traveled the whole world, including places
most people couldn't find on a map, and when all the work or fun is over I
always cherish my return home. Home to my friends and family, to my
favorite places, to my community.
I work with the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, the
country's largest CPA society with over 31,000 members. Some weeks are 70
hours long, weekly plane trips are the norm, daily e-mails are counted in
the hundreds, and I am forever attached to my PDA. I'm a perfectionist and
a stickler for integrity, honesty, hard work and fair process. I'm an avid
gardener and just as happy in the dirt as I am at a spa. There is only one
kind of wine I like and that's the kind without an h. One of my goals in
life is to average 65 mph and I exceed the average number of cars per
household with 3. I serve on various boards, councils, and committees. I
believe in the social rewards of a great cocktail party. I have one child
- the four-legged kind - Oso, my 120 pound Mastiff who thinks his mission
is to protect me from everything and everyone, and yes I'm smaller than he
but I am the alpha dog. You can count on one part of the e-letter not
changing, since he is my teacher of tolerance, patience, and adventure.
You may wonder why oh why if I knew that my other 364 days as TERA
president may not all go as smoothly as my first, would I willingly and of
sane mind agree to serve as president. I agreed for more reasons than I
can write here, but primarily: to continue the great work of the many
leaders that have come before me; to honor the work of fellow board
members Frank Parrello (vice president), Pauline Mauro (treasurer), Liz
Wagner (secretary) and board members Keith Louie, Renate Kofahl, Rich Puz,
Mary Tokita, and Michael Zamarripa; to ensure that TERA continues for
another 20 years; because this is a great community and I want to be a
part of shaping it's future; to promote volunteerism and show that busy
professionals can be involved in their community with a little
multi-tasking and prioritizing; and because of you, our TERA members who
make this community great. Not a member yet? I can assure you, I will ask
you to join.
I look forward to meeting you and working with you.
Maria Nazario, President

TERA's Preservation, Planning and Development Sub-committee meets on
the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the basement of the
Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock.
Frank Parrello, TERA's Vice President and Chair of the PP&D
Committee reports:
At its meeting on Thursday, July 19, 2007, the City of Los Angeles,
Cultural Heritage Commission passed a motion recommending that
the City of Los Angeles designate the McNary House at 4777 Eagle Rock
Boulevard as a Historic-Cultural Monument. The Commission
further moved that the two Pacific Cut Bungalow Houses on the abutting lot
that were also built for the McNary family not be designated. We would
have liked to see all the structures associated with the McNary's
designated, but having the main house designated is still a very positive
outcome for the Eagle Rock Valley Historic Society and TERA. The owner of
the property was present at the hearing and while it appeared that she
would have preferred that none of the structures be designated it did not
appear that she will protest the designation of the main house.
On a related note, at the Thursday meeting, the Commission also
recommended that the Waite House owned by Ori Schurr at 2341 Hill Drive be
designate as a Historic-Cultural Monument. The Schurr family supported the
nomination, which they had prepared by Charles Fisher who was our
consultant on the McNary House.

There are currently six vacant positions on the Eagle Rock Neighborhood
Council Board. To ensure that the board has a quorum to conduct business,
and to also generate interest among stakeholders to consider running in
future elections, the board approved a motion to amend the by-laws as
follows:
"Vacant Board Seats
If all Board seats are not filled after the general election, or if a
Board seat becomes vacant due to resignations or recall, the vacant Board
seat may be filled by the ERNC Board of Directors' appointment of a
stakeholder on an interim basis. The Board seat shall be filled by
election at the next ERNC general election."
The six positions open consist of Civic Director (1 of 2 positions),
and Sub-District Directors for areas 1,2,3 and 4. The treasurer position
is also vacant but will be filled on an interim basis by a current board
member.
If you are interested in an interim position on the board, please
attend our next meeting on Tuesday, August 7, and let us know.
Because half the positions are filled by election every other year, the
position of Sub-District 2 and the Treasurer will be open in the spring
2008 elections. These positions will be for the full term of two years.
The other vacant positions will be for only a one- year replacement
term, and in 2009 will be open again for full-term elections
If you decide to give it a shot and it turns out not to be what you
wanted there are no obligations to stay. But if you do volunteer your
time, on behalf of the entire Board, we thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Vince Antonino

This is the Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles. Our cross street is
Maywood.
CentrePoint Entertainment will present The Yowling & Other
Sounds from Highland Park, a tantalizing tale written and
performed by nationally published performance artist and two-time City of
L.A. Artist-in-Residence Lisa Marie Sandoval on Thursday, August 16 at 8
p.m. at The Whitefire Theatre, located at 13500 Ventura Blvd., one block
east of Woodman in Studio City.
Directed by Wendi Berman, The Yowling & Other Sounds from Highland
Park features an uptown girl from private college, who trying to find
herself and having no place to go lands in the neighborhood of her
nightmares, an impoverished Latino barrio in Northeast L.A. Slowly sucked
into a foreign world, she crashes into herself, God, and the guttural cry
of her soul and does the unthinkable - she marries one of "them."
Performing for crowds of up to 1000, Lisa Marie's exotic blend of dance,
drama, poetic storytelling will sweep you into a story of love, angst,
fear, hope, and bring you face to face with your own yowling and what you
really search for.
Sandoval vividly brings story to life and connects the cries of human
souls with a one-of-a-kind performance that is, says the editor of the
SGVP Quarterly, "image rich - to achieve perfect communication with her
audience," who are "invariably left deeply moved to action." Lisa Marie is
"talented and cutting edge," says Jenny Krusoe, exec. dir. for Center for
the Arts, Eagle Rock. Even Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa proclaims, "Her
powerful performances - truthful and heartfelt and I look forward to many
more performances in the years to come. We are truly blessed to have an
artist like Lisa Marie Sandoval residing in Northeast Los Angeles."
Sandoval has appeared on television and nationally at Art & Soul
2005 and Austin's Red Salmon Arts series, both in Texas. Local performance
venues include Beyond Baroque, Sylvan Amphitheater, University of La
Verne's "Voices in Action" series, Barnes & Noble, USC Tyler Pavilion,
Rock Rose among others as well as commissioned performances for city and
community organizations. Several pieces of The Yowling have been published
in The Southern California Anthology, The Christian Century, Borderlands:
Texas Poetry Review, plus others. Currently, Sandoval tours her one-woman
show and works to produce and regularly perform in the What's the Story?
monthly Monday evenings in Santa Monica. She holds a master's degree from
the Professional Writing program at USC and a bachelor's degree from
Occidental College.
General admission is $20/$15 students or seniors. Tickets are available

Six Blocks of History: WESTERN Heights HPOZ Home
Tour
Come join us for Six Blocks of History, the Western Heights
Neighborhood Association (WHNA) and Historic Preservation Overlay Zone
(HPOZ) Homes Tour, on Sunday, September 9, 2007, from 11 am to 4 pm.
Stroll through the "streetcar suburb" where up-and-coming young
professional families built their homes in the early part of this century.
Eight historically significant homes will be open for tour.
Located just north of the Santa Monica Freeway between Western and
Arlington, Western Heights is an architecturally diverse enclave filled
with custom built homes from the turn of the century. Originally developed
outside the city limits, this six-block area was a forerunner to the
modern suburb, far from the dusty and noisy center of town. The
residential streets are characterized by two and three story single family
residences in many architectural styles including Craftsman, Tudor
Revival, Queen Anne, Spanish Colonial Revival, Monterey Revival and
American Four- square. Many were designed by some of the most prominent
architects of Los Angeles, including John C. Austin, Myron Hunt, Sumner
Hunt, Frank M. Tyler, Elmer Grey, Arthur R. Kelley and Paul Williams. Much
of the community's architectural legacy remains intact in spite of the
construction of the Santa Monica Freeway in 1960. The Western Heights
HPOZ, created in 2001, contains 150 structures dating from the late 19th
century to the 1930's.
Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 the day of the tour. Final tickets
will be sold at 3:30 pm. Tickets for the self-guided tour are available
through WHNA, PO Box 191400, Los Angeles, CA 90019 or by emailing
westernheightstour@mac.com. Proceeds from this event will benefit
construction of traffic easements in the neighborhood. Visit our historic
neighborhood at www.We
