  • I want to express my gratitude to the many who helped me during my two terms as TERA's president. In particular I want to thank the current TERA Board for stepping up and working tirelessly to building a strong and vital organization serving the community. These people get very little thanks and virtually no recognition, but spend many hours each month working mostly behind the scenes for TERA and for Eagle Rock. Frank Parrello stepped up as TERA's vice president last year, taking TERA's position on the Eagle Rock Community Preservation and Revitalization Board, as well as chairing TERA's Preservation, Planning and Development Committee. Liz Wagner, formerly TERA's treasurer, took over as Board secretary, in addition to continuing to work on the Home Tour Committee and participating on the Finance Committee. Pauline Mauro, who became treasurer at the same time as I was elected president, worked tirelessly as treasurer, providing me with wise counsel, serving as co-chair to the Home Tour Committee, and was largely responsible for convincing me to run for president. I'm still figuring out how to get even with her. Scott Bogue, TERA's webmaster, provided me with endless help when we changed the format of the e-letter, as well as providing an important link between TERA's past history and future goals. Thanks also to Mary Tokita, who allowed me to participate in her dream of building a community garden and art park out of a sliver of abandoned city right of way. Mary's Bastille Day Eagle Rockdale Community Garden and Art Park celebration was a huge success, not only for Mary, the gardeners, artists and TERA, but for all of Eagle Rock. Thanks to Keith Louie, who goes through the efforts of organizing, publicizing, setting up and taking down for TERA's quarterly (more or less) community meetings. Keith does this with varying degrees of support and is responsible for all of it. He contacts the speakers, from Councilmembers, to City Controllers, to historic preservation experts, to realtors and on and on. He arranges for the donations of food, picks up the food, sets up the room, runs the meeting, cleans up the room, and then takes the left over food to the fire station. My friend Jeanine Colini, who left the TERA Board at the end of her term this year to pursue her revived interest in music, provided "branding" for TERA, using her talents in marketing and graphic arts to update TERA's look and create a uniformity of image. She also brought joyful counsel and a calming effect when things got tense. As current Board members move on, new Board members arrive. TERA was fortunate to get two outstanding new Board members this past year. Renate Kofahl came on the Board and took over membership responsibility, which includes the Spring/Summer membership drive, as well as keeping the membership data base up to date, printing and sending out membership cards, and searching for new volunteers. Rich Puz worked on last year's Home Tour and this year came on the Board and is Home Tour Committee Chair and will get progressively busier as the year progresses until about 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 14, 2007, when the Tour is declared officially over and the clean-up from the "after- party" is finished. And finally thanks to Maria Nazario, past co-chair of the Home Tour Committee along with Pauline, who agreed to be nominated and to serve as TERA's next president. Congratulations and thank you Maria. It's a wonderful and generous TERA Board of Directors that you get to work with during the coming year and you have my full support and gratitude for taking on the job.

There are also volunteers too numerous to thank, but Betty Tyndall and Renate Crump have been consistently there for TERA during my presidency, at PP&D meetings as well as working at the front table at every public meeting. And it was great to surprise Betty with a birthday cake at the Candidates' Meet and Greet last Spring. And thanks also to my good friend Juli Lanser, who was Docent Coordinator for the first TERA Home Tour in which I was involved as a Board member and helped sell Home Tour tickets with me every year after that.

It has also been my privilege to work with both Mayor Villaraigosa and Councilmember Huizar and their staff on numerous projects which would not have been possible without their support. TERA and I deeply appreciate your continuing support of our efforts in Eagle Rock.

But most of all, I'd like to thank my wife Carol for her unflagging support in all things over the last two years. Carol gave me wise counsel during stressful times, helped edit the e-letter when others bailed out without a look behind, sold Eagle Rock Flags at community meetings, and made it ok for me to be involved with the community's business. I'm looking forward to spending lots of time returning the favor and supporting her in all that she is currently undertaking.

Thanks Eagle Rock. As Laurel and Apryl say, see ya 'round the town.

Eagle Rock Chamber Has Eagle Rock Flags

The Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce is now the depository for all Eagle Rock Flags, large and small. Several years ago TERA, the Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce (ERCC), and Eagle Rock Community Preservation and Revitalization Inc. (ERCPR) jointly agreed to utilize equal shares of the monies paid by wireless phone companies for the benefit of the community to purchase two large flags, designed by Eagle Rock's own John Urquiza, to fly along side Old Glory and the California flag from one of the three flag poles (cell phone antennae) near the intersection of the Glendale and 134 Freeways. To raise money to pay for repairs and replacement to the large flags, the three groups agreed to purchase and sell medium size (3' x 5') flags and small (4" x 6") flags. So, at various public meetings, community events and gatherings, TERA members could be seen selling flags. The small flags moved with some success; the medium flags move out of storage like molasses above the artic circle in February. In the meantime, windstorms and weather took their toll on the two large flags flying over the freeway, which now need replacement. So the 3 groups came together again and agreed to use the remainder of the funds from the original purchase of the flags, plus the proceeds from TERA's sale of the medium and small flags to purchase replacement large flags for the flag pole overlooking the Glendale and 134 Freeways. The 3 groups also agreed that the Chamber would assume control of the remaining flag inventory, to sell them at a price to be determined by the Chamber, the proceeds of which are still to be used for the repair and maintenance of the large flags. And the Chamber has ordered the replacement flags for the damaged banners, and those flags should be flying soon. So if you are looking to fly Eagle Rock's own colors, be sure to contact ERCC; they've got a flag for you!

    Coffee with Your Congressman

Congressman Xavier Becerra is asking for your ideas on how to chart a new direction for our country. He writes:

    Dear Friends:

It is a new day in Congress, and I am asking for your ideas on how to chart a new direction for our country. As your representative for the past 14 years, I have made it a priority to visit every neighborhood in the district to see out your thoughts and views on the issues of the day so that I can vote for policies that best fit the needs of our community.

The war in Iraq (now in its fifth year), budget and trade deficits, immigration reform, Social Secuity, funding for education and health care - these are the issues that dramatically affect our lives and dominate discussion in our neation's capital. Yet, the best ideas for addressing our problems don't come from Washingon, they come from the folks back home. That is why I invite and encourage you to join in on the discussion and give me your ideas on taking this country in a new direction.

COFFEE WITH YOUR CONGRESSMAN, SATURDAY, JULY 21, 2007 at DAHLIA HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, 5063 FLORISTAN AVENEU, LOS ANGELES, CA, 90041 (Parking entrance on Floristan between Colorado and Waldran) from 11 a.m. to Noon

A face to face conversation is the best way for you to share with me your thoughts and ideas about the issues facing our country. Together, we can set a better course for America.

If you require special accommodations at this event, please call my District Office at (213)483-1425. Furthermore, I always want to be helpful so please do not hesitate to contact my office with any question, comment, or concern you may have. Together, we can make our government work for you.

    Sincerely,

    Xavier Becerra

    Member of Congress

Subject: Letter of thanks to the Blissful Soul

The Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness (GLAD) extends a heartfelt thanks to the Blissful Soul for hosting a fantastic fundraiser on Saturday, June 16th! A total of $1,000 was raised through in-store purchases and silent auction bids to assist GLAD with much needed building repairs. The day long event was filled with good food, friends and fun!

Activities included a Silent auction filled with goods and services donated by local Eagle Rock businesses/friends, a 'Sign Language 101' class led by GLAD PR Team Maisha Franklin and Rachel Braver, sign language performances by Velia Foster, Jody Stevenson and friends, creative magic tricks by John Tonsick, mime fun with Mark Wenzel and a live bluegrass performance by Blue Metro!

GLAD has been improving the lives of the deaf and hard of hearing since its creation as a volunteer organization in 1969. The GLAD facility located in Eagle Rock is home to numerous and crucial programs of GLAD including human services, health education, low-income senior housing, communication assistance, employment development, public relations and more. Funds raised will help assist with the substantial mortgage of the facility and assist with the building's current extensive repairs and maintenance.

GLAD occupies the former Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) Retirement Home, a historical landmark. The building was built in 1927 and was used by the WCTU and its members until declining membership forced it to close. The WCTU building went up for sale in 1989, with many offers to tear down the building and develop the site resulting. In 1991 The Eagle Rock Association stepped in and successfully petitioned to have the site designated an historic landmark, thus preserving the building and grounds. GLAD took over the property in 1993 and converted it into a deaf-friendly working and residential environment.

GLAD thanks Cheryl Leutjen and her team for hosting the Helping Hands event as their final event. This unique event was a great way to raise funds and awareness for our agency and we appreciate them thinking of us. We wish Cheryl the best in her future endeavors and look forward to the return of the Blissful Soul to Eagle Rock in the near future!

    ER Neighborhood Council News

There are currently six vacant positions on the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council Board. To ensure that the board has a quorum to conduct business, and to also generate interest among stakeholders to consider running in future elections, the board approved a motion to amend the by-laws as follows:

    "Vacant Board Seats

If all Board seats are not filled after the general election, or if a Board seat becomes vacant due to resignations or recall, the vacant Board seat may be filled by the ERNC Board of Directors' appointment of a stakeholder on an interim basis. The Board seat shall be filled by election at the next ERNC general election."

The six positions open consist of Civic Director (1 of 2 positions), and Sub-District Directors for areas 1,2,3 and 4. The treasurer position is also vacant but will be filled on an interim basis by a current board member.

If you are interested in an interim position on the board, please attend our next meeting on Tuesday, August 7, and let us know.

Because half the positions are filled by election every other year, the position of Sub-District 2 and the Treasurer will be open in the spring 2008 elections. These positions will be for the full term of two years.

The other vacant positions will be for only a one- year replacement term, and in 2009 will be open again for full-term elections

If you decide to give it a shot and it turns out not to be what you wanted there are no obligations to stay. But if you do volunteer your time, on behalf of the entire Board, we thank you very much.

    Sincerely,

    Vince Antonino

    Sub-District 8 Director

COUNCILMEMBER JOSE HUIZAR LEADS EFFORT TO CREATE GARVANZA HISTORIC PRESERVATION OVERLAY ZONE

City Council Approves HPOZ Study- Action Long- awaited by Northeast Los Angeles Community

Councilmember José Huizar, District 14, was pleased to announce that the Garvanza community of Northeast Los Angeles is closer to becoming a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ). The City Council approved a motion introduced by Councilman Huizar, which instructed the City's Planning Department to conduct a $120,000 study that will evaluate the historic significance of the area.

HPOZ's are designed to protect and enhance the use of buildings, structures, natural features, and areas which are reminders of the City's history. They also protect unique and irreplaceable assets to the City and its neighborhoods which are worthy examples of past architectural styles.

The Garvanza community features many structures which represent significant architectural history, including the original historic township of Garvanza established in the early 1900's. The proposed Garvanza HPOZ boundaries cover areas between Pasadena City limits to the north; Metro right- of-way bridge to the south; Eastside of Avenue 66 to the east; and Eastside of Figueroa proceeding to the Westside of Avenue 63 at York to the west. The Garvanza HPOZ will also incorporate the Judson Studios/Thorne Street portion of the current Highland Park HPOZ.

Councilman Huizar advocated strongly, along with the community, for Council to agree to fund the HPOZ study; and hopes the area will be added to the existing 21 HPOZ's in the City.

"I believe this area represents significant cultural and architectural resources which should be protected. Residents have been fighting for this Historic Preservation Overlay Zone for many years - in fact, this issue stretches back several administrations in Council District 14," said Councilman Huizar.

"We are at a critical point in time for the historic portions of Garvanza - many of the structures we are looking to protect with this HPOZ are in danger of being torn down. This HPOZ will also offer homeowners various tax, regulatory, and financial incentives that are designed to offset the expense of rehabilitating and maintaining their properties." he added.

The study is expected to be completed within a year.

    Burglers on Hill Drive

    Dear Neighbors,

Today between the hours of 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., a house on Hill Drive was ransacked and robbed. The robber left cameras, computers, and silver behind but found ALL valuable jewelry - even very well hidden... They removed a pillow case from the bed, and filled it up.

The robber(s) entered through a locked sliding glass door in the backyard that only had one lock at the handle - they jimmied it and easily came inside.

I had seen an email weeks ago alerting neighbors that a burglar was in our midst and broke in through side windows, and had mentioned it to the owner of this home and she had said, "Uh oh - one of my side windows was recently open and they're never open..." so perhaps this was not the first attempt at this home.

I urge you - LOCK ALL SIDE WINDOWS and secure all screens. If you need locks or latches replaced, do so IMMEDIATELY. If you have slat windows, replace them with another kind or install an alarm system - I have broken into my home on Mt. Royal on two occasions through the slat windows in a matter of seconds, as has my dog walker... So many of these old houses have them and they're just not smart.

If you have sliding glass doors, make sure they are locked at all times in more than one place - at the base as well as handle, or have a stick behind the door preventing its ability to slide.

Lock your garage!!! Burglars LOVE robbing garages.

Perhaps we should set up a neighborhood watch group. Any interest? Let's look into it! And let's watch out for one another.

    Thanks and be safe,

    Carol Allen

Carol followed up with this letter:

    Hi Neighbors,

Sorry for the last-minute notice - I just found out there's a Community Watch Meeting tonight! The LAPD has been asked to send a representative to inform us of how to work together to protect our neighborhoods and each other.

    Details:

Eagle Rock City Hall in the room off the parking lot (where we vote), 2035 Colorado Blvd., at 7 p.m.

    Come one, come all!

    Thanks,

    Carol Allen

Unfortunately, this was received shortly before the Thursday night meeting but those having an interest should follow up with Carol.

    Hi Michael,

Did you see the article in the Thursday, July 12.2007, LA Times, "Weekend" section pg.E48? A big article about "Larkin's" and a little one about "Aunty Em's" same pg.

    Nancy Shannon

I did, thanks Nancy. Unfortunately I found them about 15 minutes after I sent out the e-letter last week. For those of you who missed them, here's what was said:

    California meets country

SoCal native Larkin Mackey's Southern fare mixes in flavors of his youth.

By S. Irene Virbila, Times Staff Writer

    July 12, 2007

ACROSS from the Eagle Rock Baptist Church, a new soul food restaurant has opened in a sweet little 1911 bungalow with a wraparound porch. Partners Larkin Mackey, the chef; Joshua McBride, who runs the front of the house; and sous-chef Rick Rowan have been working overtime for months to make it all happen, after long delays. But it's here, and none too soon.

Finally, something that's not Italian or tapas or sushi. Larkin's revels in Southern cooking with a contemporary spin. The copy on the restaurant's website goes a bit over the top, hailing Larkin's debut as "a new era in soul food." But you have to love the partners' enthusiasm.

The fact is, Larkin's cuisine really is something different. That's because Mackey, who can trace roots back to New Orleans, grew up in Southern California - a vegetarian. And he weaves the Mexican spices and California accents of his youth through his tribute to all things Southern.

The dining room, with its antique stained glass behind the bar, sash windows and mismatched chairs, is very country and charming. Soon, they'll add outdoor seating in a garden in progress out back, and on that inviting porch. Tables are set with casual posies. And the walls are hung with evocative art photos. Walking in for the first time, you find a happy hubbub of eaters. The Ball canning jars used as water (and wine) glasses were inspired by "The Color Purple," according to McBride, but wine drinkers may want to bring proper glasses. Until Larkin's wine and beer license comes through, it's strictly BYOB.

Our waitress sashays over to the table in a pretty retro-print dress, ready to take our order. Starters include a wedge lettuce salad with blue cheese dressing garnished, oddly, with a frizzle of fried onions. A salad of heirloom tomatoes paired with warm fried okra is a terrific concept, but the okra on a recent night is fried to hard pellets. Chili verde, made from the chef's grandfather's recipe, is comforting and delicious. Salmon cakes, though, are bland and undistinguished.

For those always on the lookout for a good fried chicken, I can say that Mackey makes a mean one - cooked the way it should be, in a heavy cast-iron skillet to give it the requisite crunch. It comes with red garlic mashed potatoes and a little gravy. Jambalaya is nice and spicy. There's corn-battered and fried catfish too. Southerners, though, may find the fish somewhat lacking in that tasty funk they expect from catfish. It could be any fish at all under that batter. And the smothered pork chop comes not only without the bone, it's enclosed in a pasty gravy. Back to the drafting board on that one.

Most main courses come with sides, but you can order extra, or different too, including "Aunt Carolyn's potato salad," the creamy old-fashioned kind, both sweet and spicy, or skillet-sauteed collard greens with tomatoes, hot pepper and garlic. Sweets include sweet potato pie - how could you not? - as well as banana pudding, strawberry red velvet shortcake, fruit cobblers and whatever else strikes the cook's fancy.

Though the kitchen has some trouble getting all of the food for a table out at the same time, the place is so endearing and the owners enthusiastic, it's hard to be grumpy about the opening snafus. They've worked so hard and waited so long for this moment. And here it is.

    Auntie Em's

    Cobbler classics

    Leslee Komaiko

    July 12, 2007

Cobblers can be delicious year-round, but in summer they get an extra boost from gloriously ripe fruit.

    Auntie Em's

The chefs at this groovy neighborhood hang cook up one big pan cobbler every day during summer, taking advantage of stone fruit and berries from a farmers market. One day might bring nectarines, blackberries and raspberries; another, plums and strawberries. Each order is served warm with a dollop of vanilla-infused whipped cream.

    Hi Michael,

Glad you saw it. There is another article about "Larkin's" in The Pasadena Weekly. The one with the cop on the front and an article about John Muir HS. Maybe you saw that one too.

    Nancy Shannon

Nope, but did I mention that I saw the article in the LA Times?

    Michael-

Whatever happened to the "design competition" that was supposed to result in a new Eagle Rock Monument to be located near the junction of Broadway and Colorado?

Also, any word on the A to Z carwash site?

    just curious

    Ray Dell

The last I heard, Paul Habib in CD 14 was still working on the process for the design competition for an Eagle Rock Monument. As with so many things, the more that is known about a project, the more complicated it becomes. I suggest you contact Paul directly at paul.habib@lacity.org to see what is going on with the process. I've heard nothing about the A to Z car wash site, other than some inquiries from various Eagle Rock activists and neighbors.
