1.  GOOD NEWS (DON'T YOU LOVE IT?)! -- MORE ART ON THE BOULEVARD!

The Blas Auto Repair business at the corner of Townsend and Colorado soon will be replaced by a badly needed business -- an art-framing store!  Tim Yalda, owner of Designer Framing in Glendale and jazz-CD production company Meridian Records, has signed on to a three-year lease/option to buy for the wonderful Art Deco building, and he hopes to restore it to its former and deserved glory.  The auto business-related lettering on the front windows has been mostly scraped off, which already makes the building look better.

So many artists live in Eagle Rock and Northeast Los Angeles, and businesses such as Tim's will help keep local dollars locally spent, which is one of TERA's primary goals.  Besides, more art-related businesses on the boulevard is definitely good news!

2.  A MID-SUMMER'S EVE ON THE COLORADO STREET BRIDGE -- JULY 21

Pasadena Heritage invites you to A Mid-Summer's Eve on the Colorado Street Bridge, Saturday, July 21, for the best party in town!  This event is an evening of fun for the whole family and is the signature fundraising event of Pasadena Heritage, the second largest historic preservation organization in the state with 2,500 members.

Continuous live music on three stages, festive foods and beverages, dancing under the stars, games and activities for children of all ages, antique cars, and more will be featured from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.  Master of Ceremonies will be CBS2 News Anchor Kent Shocknek.

Advance tickets are $10 for Pasadena Heritage members and $12.50 for nonmembers, and half price for children.  For additional information, please call Pasadena Heritage at (626) 441-6333 or visit their Web site at http://www.pasadenaheritage.org.

3.  CAFE BEAUJOLAIS TO BE FEATURED BY ELMER DILLS ON CHANNEL 7! -- JULY 22

Check it out!  More good press for Eagle Rock and our business district!  Our own fabulous Cafe Beaujolais will be reviewed by Mr. Elmer Dills, this Sunday, July 22, between 9:00 am and 10:00 am on Channel 7.  Owners Eric and Elda Ulmer were kind enough to invite me and my friend Mary to have dinner the evening it was filmed on June 22, so we will be there in the background, all dolled up, having a grand time!  The food, by the way, was delectable, and the service, sublime.  All the waiters are French, so it is a truly authentic (and sensuous) experience.

The Cafe deserves all the attention is has been receiving.  If you haven't yet tried it, you must.  Please call (323) 255-5111 and make your reservations now (it can be very difficult to get a seat if you just show up).  Wednesday nights, by the way, is Jazz Night, and on that night great music rounds out an amazing dining experience.

4.  LOS ANGELES COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO HAVE SATELLITE CAMPUS AT VAN DE KAMP'S

LACC has received grant funds from the Office of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and the Dean for Institutional Effectiveness, Dan Seymour, wrote us this very kind note:

"I appreciate your letter of support.  With your help, and some of HUD's money, City College will be up and running at the Van de Kamp's site.

Amidst such a rush that life is, we appreciate your letter in support of our grant.  We know that your time is valuable, and we can't thank you enough.  Just a note to show our appreciation and say thanks."

5.  ECLECTIC EAGLE ROCK HOME TOUR COMMITTEE HARD AT WORK, AND WE WANT YOU!

Now is the time to sign up for Eagle Rock's A-team!  The Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour 2002 Committee is beginning its work for next year's tour, and we have some GREAT ideas.  Our tour has helped do wonders for our community, and it's only going to get better every year, especially with your help.  Our meetings are fun (we do joke around a lot), yet productive, and a very positive experience.  You can be a part of that success by calling Home Tour Committee member Suzanne Prieur at (323) 257-7042 and saying yes!

6.  BLEND INSTALLATION LUNCHEON -- JULY 25

BLEND (Business (and Residents) for Law Enforcement Northeast Division) is holding its annual installation luncheon on July 25, 2001, 11:30 AM, Police Historical Museum (old Highland Park Station), 6045 York Boulevard, Highland Park.  BLEND is a 25-year-old organization that was formed to assist in the good work of the Northeast Division LAPD.  BLEND has been invaluable to helping keep our area much safer.

Keynote Speaker will be Margaret "Peggy" York.  Chief Parks will be in attendance and Councilman Ed Reyes, representing Council District 1 to the south of us, will be the installing officer.  Tours of the facility will be available after the luncheon, which is to be catered by Colombo's Restaurant.  Cost is $20 per person.  Everyone's invited!  Reservations/questions - call Lucy Spurgeon (323) 254-3725.

7.  SUPPORT OUR POLICE -- NATIONAL NIGHT OUT -- AUGUST 7

Eagle Rock celebrates National Night Out.  Stand up against crime!  Tuesday, August 7, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. -- please join us for a community potluck block party at the Eagle Rock City Hall, 2035 Colorado Boulevard in Eagle Rock.  Your ticket is a dish or non-alcoholic drinks to serve 10 to 20 people.

Candlelight vigil at 8:30 p.m. to show support for our local police and victims of crime.  Please bring your own candles.  Sponsored by Council member Nick Pacheco, and hosted by Northeast LAPD Community Police Advisory Board and the Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce.  Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

8.  FOR ALL THE GARDENERS OUT THERE -- FREE HORSE POO FOR COMPOST

Call Elaine Brock at 818.956.9048.  Bring a pickup and she will fill the bed with wonderful horse stuff to make your garden grow.  Her stable is just a few blocks from the Costco on Los Feliz.

The first time you go, and anytime you would like her to do the heavy lifting for you, you should call and arrange a time to meet her there.  If you just want a little bit, you're welcome to come and help yourself anytime.

[Editor's note:  Don't be skittish.  Many years ago, I rode, showed, groomed, and cleaned up after horses -- I can guarantee their manure is one of the purest and cleanest-smelling animal "poos."]

8.  CONCERTS IN THE PARK -- DON'T MISS THEM!

Unfortunately, we missed the first one, held on Sunday, July 8 (and we regret it).  It featured Captain Cardiac and the Coronaries, great old rock and roll tunes, sponsored by Adelphia Communications.  We heard it was a smash and that the dance floor was a-blazin'!

Other dates are as follows, and the next one's coming up this Sunday:

This Sunday, July 22 -- Spellman's Magic Spectacular preceded by the Eagle Rock High School Choir.  Sponsored by Senator Jack Scott, Council member Nick Pacheco, Uptown Gay & Lesbian Alliance, and Westfield Shoppingtown Eagle Rock.

Sunday, August 5 -- We the People, tunes from the 70s.  Sponsored by Dilbeck Realtors/GMAC.

Sunday, August 19 -- Jack Lantz Big Band, those wonderful sounds of swing.  Sponsored by Glendale Adventist Medical Center.

This terrific yearly event is brought to you by the Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce.

9.  EAGLE ROCK FARMERS MARKET -- EVERY FRIDAY

At the intersection of Caspar and Merton Avenues just south and east of Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevards, Eagle Rock's Farmers Market takes place every Friday starting at 5:00 p.m. and ending at 9:00 p.m.  Lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, bakery goods, cut flowers, potted plants, ready-to-eat foods, crafts, and gift items are offered.  A wide array of organically grown produce as well as foods prized in the Philippines are also featured.

A visit to the Farmers Market is a terrific way to end a long work week and help prepare for that weekend dinner party.  Come see friends and neighbors, and enjoy live music with it all!  Activities for children as well.

Sponsored by our own Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce.  For more information, please call Michael Nogueira at (323) 225-5466.

10.  LETTERS AND E.MAILS

"Congratulations!  You've had a lot to do with this coming to pass, persistently staying in the picture from the very first hints that Fred Eric had a sharp eye on Eagle Rock, keeping contact, encouraging (perhaps even cajoling?) and exerting all the body English possible.  Thanks for all those good things that you've been doing!  ER (not the TV show -- but maybe a TV series 'Eagle Rock 90041' is not so outlandish an idea -- think of the possible plots!) is looking more and more the way you have visualized it and talked about it!"

-- Tim Sanders, revered Eagle Rock elder statesman, TERA member, and former TERA president

"Hi, we are new to Eagle Rock and we just love it here. Please include us in your email list.  I am running an ad in your next issue. We just bought a house in March and are looking forward to a happy life in this groovy little town!

Thanks."

-- Pat Viera, new Eagle Rock resident and (we hope) soon-to-be TERA member

"I am on the e.mail list and enjoy the bulletin.  If you need, I will proofread anything you want.  Keep up the good work -- keep on [Eagle} [R]ocking."

-- Bill Fishman, Eagle Rock resident and apparently picky TERA member [Bill, does what I write really NEED proofreading?  Okay, okay!  Maybe sometimes . . .]

"Thanks so much for sharing your experience and insights about why TERA works as well as it does.  I greatly admire your spirit and the hard work you've spent in improving Eagle Rock.  It really shows!  Although I do not live in Eagle Rock, I'm close enough to enjoy the businesses that you are attracting to the area.  Thanks again."

-- Katherine Padilla, Pasadena resident and North Lake Specific Plan facilitator/consultant, terrific person, and recent lunch partner
