1.  PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE -- HILARY NORTON OROZCO

I have reached the end of this term as TERA's leader.  It has been my honor and great challenge to have led TERA for two incredible years during this unique transitional administration.  TERA turns an amazing 20 years old in 2006!

Organizations, like people, go through growth phases.  Some are exciting.  Some are challenging.  The features of my administration that I am the most proud of was that it served as the bridge to expanded partnerships with other important Eagle Rock civic groups, and we were able to complete our transition to a mature membership organization.

Of course, big shifts do not happen without growing pains and exciting opportunities.  We've experienced important challenges because of our increasing membership body, communication issues, technological advances, community relations, and the need for greater legal and accounting systems.  Always attendant in volunteer organizations is the pressure on Board members and committee members to balance their limited time in order to meet the demands of personal life and career with their time commitment to their volunteer contribution.

We've met these challenges with new operation procedures, policies, communication systems, embracing more sophisticated technology, strengthening our committees, and a very successful concerted outreach for more volunteers from our TERA membership.  The new TERA administration will inherit a streamlined and efficient organization through which they will be able to focus on mission versus struggling with day-to-day operations.

The presidency of TERA, like that of most Eagle Rock organizations, requires a 200% commitment.  I could not have done it without the constant support of my Board of Directors, and especially my Vice President, Kathleen Long, who continually stood by me when times were most challenging.

My children are growing and my career path recently changed, and therefore more is required of me personally.  I will remain an active member of the TERA Board and am pleased and privileged to join the ranks of distinguished Presidents Emeriti Kathleen Aberman, Tim Sanders, and Joanne Turner.

Administrations change, but the mission remains the same.  TERA's work for improvement of the quality of life in the Eagle Rock community will continue -- providing research and education about our community, participating in land-use planning activities, and promoting positive community growth and beautification.  Our dynamic commitments to our community reflect the various areas of concern required to fulfill this broad mission: aesthetic improvement through the Eagle Rockdale Community Garden and Art Park and other efforts, our annual Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour, our hard-copy newsletter and weekly e.letter, addressing issues of preservation, planning and development, and our public meetings and events, among many other positive things.

I invite you to be part of this new wave of energy.  Join.  Volunteer.  Participate.  There are many opportunities for you to educate, learn, contribute, and have fun!  TERA is still the best way to 'Invest in Your Community.'

Thank you again for your continued support of TERA.

Most sincerely --

Hilary Norton Orozco, TERA President

2.  OUR SYMPATHIES TO TERA PRESIDENT HILARY NORTON OROZCO

On July 10, Patricia Stresino Orozco, sister-in-law  of TERA President Hilary Norton Orozco and her husband Gerard, passed away after a seven-month battle with cancer.  Patricia was a young mother of two children, one of whom was born only months before.  Hilary and Gerard, our sympathies, prayers, and support go out to you and your family.

3.  SPACE AND PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR SUMMER CAMP AT CENTER FOR THE ARTS

Space and Partial Scholarships Available for Summer Camp at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock!

For more information call 323.226.1617.  Camp ends August 19th!

Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock, has expanded its full-day summer art camp for children ages 6 through 12 to eight weeks.  Funding is still available to provide partial (50%) scholarships.  Full camp tuition is $240 a week ($4.70 an

This eight-week camp schedule will be offered weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 27th through August 19th. In each of the eight one-week sessions teachers concentrate on giving students an appreciation for the arts and how significantly art, design and self-expression impact our daily lives.  Our summer art camps help the students build self-confidence and self-esteem.  Activities throughout the day range from teaching basic art skills to inspiring original ways of expression, and from high-energy drama exercises to centering yoga lessons.   This summer also features the art of cooking!

11.  LETTERS AND E.MAILS

"A special thank you to Joanne Turner for getting me back on the TERA e.letter."

-- Pam Thackery, Eagle Rock resident and TERA member

"Joanne:

Thank you for giving me insight regarding the art studio on Colorado Boulevard.  Yes, Bob's gallery [Carlotta's Passion] is truly worthy of viewing.  I will return.

You mentioned you can put me on the TERA newsletter mailing list if I contacted you.  I would like to read the newsletter again.  Can I pick it up on my email server?  What is the address?

Again, thank you for your gracious comments.  The Eagle Rock Association is an active group of gifted people.  I hope they focus one day on The Farmer's Market as it requires I go to Pasadena to that market to buy food.  The amount of food selection is overshadowed by the gifts for sale.  Perhaps it changed by now.  Cordially,"

-- Louis Abbott, Glassell Park resident

12.  QUOTE OF THE WEEK -- RAY BRADBURY

"If we listened to our intellect, we'd never have a love affair.  We'd never have a friendship.  We'd never go into business, because we'd be cynical.  Well, that's nonsense.  You've got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down."

If you have changed your e.mail address or would like to be removed from this list, send us an e.mail to e.letter@TERA90041.org with the word(s) "remove" or "address change" in the subject box, as appropriate.

POLICY ON SUBMITTING A NOTICE:  If you have a press release, letter of comment, question or other notice that you feel might be of interest to the Eagle Rock community, send it to e.letter@TERA90041.org.  Your announcement -- in the form of an e.mail text message, (no attachments, please) -- should be in our hands by noon on Tuesday to be considered for inclusion in that week's issue.
