It's summer time and things are supposed to slow down a little.
School's out, people are away on vacation, traffic is a little lighter on
the freeways, but it's still busy at TERA. The home tour committee is hard
at work again, finalizing the selection of homes for the Eclectic Eagle
Rock Home Tour, to be held on October 14, 2007, for those of you who are
into advance planning. The Committee is chaired this year by Rich Puz.
Perhaps, because the tour is being run by a guy, I should reprise my idea
of a tour that emphasizes homes with the latest in high definition burn
your eye sockets digital theatre centers, cars in garages that will go
from 0 to 100 mph to 0 in under 10 seconds, motorcycles that can be ridden
on the rear wheel for at least 440 yards, and back yard BBQ's with at
least 10 burners or more, capable of not just cooking, but vaporizing vast
amounts of charred flesh. But probably not. Rich was blessed with an extra
dose of common sense and seldom listens to me.
Summer also started out with the Blissful Soul's closing sale and fund
raiser for the Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness (GLAD), located in
the historic Women's Christian Temperance Union building at 2222 Laverna
Avenue in Eagle Rock. As was intimated last week, it's sometimes hard to
find the good in goodbye, but in this case the good was clearly evident.
The Blissful Soul raised $1,000 for GLAD during its closing sale. A sad
event, but a wonderful way to say goodbye. Thanks, Cheryl.
TERA is hard at work on its "ARTCAN" proposal. Enough businesses on
Eagle Rock and Colorado Boulevard have agreed to sponsor "ARTCANS"
(artistically designed trash recepticles) that TERA, in cooperation with
the Center for the Arts Eagle Rock and the Arroyo Arts Collaborative, is
proceeding with the funding and placement of the cans this summer. The
project should be completed by November, in time for Holiday Shopping in
Eagle Rock.
Closer to the present for those of you who are resistant to planning
too far ahead (life is uncertain at best; get over it!), is the Bastille
Day celebration on July 14th at TERA's Eagle Rockdale Community Garden.
We've changed the announcement below to remove most of the French in order
to order to minimize the correction letters, but fun is fun in any
language. Es verdad, mon ami!
And on July 31, TERA is hosting a public forum to discuss the status of
Northeast Los Angeles' Southwest Museum and its future under the ownership
of the Autry Museum. Keith Louie, TERA Board Member and person in charge
of TERA's public meetings provides the details below.
And TERA is not the only group that has activities going on. Summer in
Eagle Rock means concerts in Eagle Rock Park. We failed to provide the
schedule last week, but it's in here this week! Good music and good times.
Be there. Your neighbors will be and someone should keep an eye on them to
see what their up to. And don't miss the Eagle Rock Valley Historical
Society's Ice Cream Social on Sunday, July 22nd. Rumor has it that free
Historical Society T- shirts are to be made available to current and new
members at the door.
And not to cave into silly superstitions, but be careful out there this
Friday the 13th!
Michael Tharp, President
Storm the Eagle Rockdale Community Garden Gates on Bastille

Chocolate, libations and finger foods, with herb bundle souvenirs for
all!
The Garden is in Eagle Rock, nestled in a neighborhood off Figueroa and
La Loma.
Get off the 134 freeway at Figueroa and go left (south) to Colorado
Blvd. Take a left at the next light, La Loma. Take the first true right at
Lanark St., go one block to Shelby-Lanark Park. The Garden gate is at the
south end of the park.
Vive la Liberte! Vive la Terre!!
You are then encouraged to take the free NELA Art Tour, a self-guided
visit to galleries and studios throughout Eagle Rock and neighboring
communities!

Coffee with Your Congressman
Congressman Xavier Becerra is asking for your ideas on how to chart a
new direction for our country. He writes:
Dear Friends:
It is a new day in Congress, and I am asking for your ideas on how to
chart a new direction for our country. As your representative for the past
14 years, I have made it a priority to visit every neighborhood in the
district to see out your thoughts and views on the issues of the day so
that I can vote for policies that best fit the needs of our community.
The war in Iraq (now in its fifth year), budget and trade deficits,
immigration reform, Social Secuity, funding for education and health care
- these are the issues that dramatically affect our lives and dominate
discussion in our neation's capital. Yet, the best ideas for addressing
our problems don't come from Washingon, they come from the folks back
home. That is why I invite and encourage you to join in on the discussion
and give me your ideas on taking this country in a new direction.
COFFEE WITH YOUR CONGRESSMAN, SATURDAY, JULY 21, 2007 at DAHLIA HEIGHTS
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, 5063 FLORISTAN AVENEU, LOS ANGELES, CA, 90041 (Parking
entrance on Floristan between Colorado and Waldran) from 11 a.m. to Noon
A face to face conversation is the best way for you to share with me
your thoughts and ideas about the issues facing our country. Together, we
can set a better course for America.
If you require special accommodations at this event, please call my
District Office at (213)483-1425. Furthermore, I always want to be helpful
so please do not hesitate to contact my office with any question, comment,
or concern you may have. Together, we can make our government work for
you.
Sincerely,
Xavier Becerra
Member of Congress
