GREAT NEWS!! -- EAGLE THEATRE AND EAGLE ROCK'S OWN FRED 62!!
We heard it from the man himself,
Fred Eric -- Eagle Rock resident and booster, chef extraordinaire, and owner of
Vida and Fred 62 restaurants in Los Feliz.
Fred confirmed that he has purchased the Eagle Theater and the
adjoining 99-cent store. Read the
announcement below that was posted in the Calendar section under
"Restaurants" of last Thursday's LA Times:
"Fred's Two: Fred Eric has two
projects on the burner. The first to
be finished (sometime in December) is a movie-theater renovation in Eagle Rock.
'I'm all for building up Eagle Rock,' he tells us. Eric wants to turn the old theater on Eagle Rock Boulevard into a
Richard Neutra-esque viewing and noshing space.
Next to the theater, Eric will
install another edition of Fred 62, his 24-hour Los Feliz diner. The theater seating will consist of couches
in the front row and free-standing chairs behind. Moviegoers will be able to order sushi and other whimsical
concession snacks throughout a show."
[We're in heaven . . .]
Fred has also purchased the former
Wharton's Nursery property, a block north of the
theatre -- you know, that chain-linked eyesore and favorite dumping ground of
particularly insensitive people. Fred
plans to turn it into a "garden parking lot" -- meaning a very nicely
landscaped parking facility -- to serve the theatre and his new restaurant.
When it opens, I'm going to call a
TERA Board meeting at the Eagle Rock Fred 62 at 3:00 a.m. We'll eat gourmet burgers and fries and feel
25 again.
The planets are truly aligning, and
TERA's 15-year dream is becoming reality.
Thank you, Kathleen Aberman -- the woman who started it all!

MORE GREAT NEWS -- EAGLE ROCK GETS MORE GOOD PRESS!
A recent issue of the Hollywood
Reporter included an article called "First Time Buyers/Summer Real
Estate," and guess which neighborhood was mentioned? E.letter recipient Yon Thomas kindly faxed
it to us. Get a load of this:
"Following the footsteps of
Silverlake and Los Feliz, Eagle Rock is poised to be the next 'in'
neighborhood among the creative community.
Because the area has not yet been discovered, an authentic English or
Spanish home can be had for $200,000 to $250,000 [we doubt that]. 'For $220,000, my daughter bought a
two-bedroom, one-bath English home with a dining room and stairs leading to a
full attic, with hardwood floors and views,' says Gerri Cragnoti, owner and
broker of G&C Properties, a boutique agency in Glendale. 'There's even a basement and a one-bedroom
guest house. Her arty friends from San
Francisco said it was the first time they've liked Los Angeles.' Traffic is minimal, so pulling up to a
restaurant or store and parking on the street is actually a possibility. All the action one could ever want can be
found five minutes east in Old Pasadena [no, the action is happening right here,
as we all know!]."

FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN FOR WOMEN'S 20TH CENTURY CLUB
The Women's 20th Century Club is
starting a fund raising campaign.
As you know, the building is in
need of restoration. The women's club
is a historical building. It was
started in 1903, and the women moved into the clubhouse in February 1915. It has truly been an Eagle Rock pride and
joy.
The club holds much history and
needs to be restored. Anyone wishing to
help with the process by donating money for improvements will have a
acknowledgment plaque with their name or business name placed in the building,
starting with donations of $100.00 or more.
Donations of furniture, curtains, rugs, etc., in very good condition or
new are encouraged, and services are also welcome.
To inquire about the fund-raising
campaign, please contact Edna Shelton, Women's Twentieth Century Club
president, at (323)254-1885 or Roe Muzingo, Membership Chair, at (323)255-5548,
or call the Women's Club at (323) 478-1883 and leave a message. Thanks for any help you can offer.

HELP GIVE A FREE MAMMOGRAM TO UNDERPRIVILEGED WOMEN
The Breast Cancer site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of donating
at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less
than a minute to go to their site &
click on "donating a mammogram" for free -- their corporate
sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate a mammogram in
exchange for advertising. Here's the
website! Pass it along to all your
women (and gentlemen!) friends!!
http://www.thebreastcancersite.com
Thanks.

CONCERTS IN THE PARK -- DON'T MISS THEM!
Unfortunately, we missed the first
one, held on July 8. It featured
Captain Cardiac and the Coronaries, great old rock and roll tunes, sponsored by
Adelphia Communications. We heard it
was a smash and that the dance floor was a-blazin'!
Other dates are as follows:
July 22 -- Spellman's Magic
Spectacular preceded by the Eagle Rock High School Choir. Sponsored by
Senator Jack Scott, Council member Nick Pacheco, Uptown Gay & Lesbian
Alliance, and Westfield Shoppingtown Eagle Rock.
August 5 -- We the People, tunes
from the 70s.
Sponsored by Dilbeck Realtors/GMAC.
August 19 -- Jack Lantz Big Band,
those wonderful sounds of swing. Sponsored by Glendale Adventist Medical
Center.
This terrific yearly event is
brought to you by the Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce.

EAGLE ROCK FARMERS MARKET -- EVERY FRIDAY
At the intersection of Caspar and
Merton Avenues just south and east of Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevards, Eagle
Rock's Farmers Market takes place every Friday starting at 5:00 p.m. and ending
at 9:00 p.m. Lots of fresh fruits,
vegetables, bakery goods, cut flowers, potted plants, ready-to-eat foods,
crafts, and gift items are offered. A
wide array of organically grown produce as well as foods prized in the
Philippines are also featured.
A visit to the Farmers Market is a
terrific way to end a long work week and help prepare for that weekend dinner
party. Come see friends and neighbors,
and enjoy live music with it all!
Activities for children as well.
Sponsored by the Eagle Rock Chamber
of Commerce. For more information,
please call Michael Nogueira at (323) 225-5466.

LETTERS AND E.MAILS
"Love receiving your
newsletters. In case you haven't seen
it, there is a (mostly) complimentary article [in the LA Weekly] about
our own Beaujolais Boulangerie in this week's edition (June 29-July5, 2001 on
page 43). The article also mentions how
home property values have escalated in our community. Thanks for all that you
do in bringing our community together."
-- Vesie Maarup, Eagle Rock
resident
"What great news that was
about the Eagle Theatre in today's Times [see Item No. 1 above]! I'd been hoping for the best, but this is so
much better than what I had imagined, it sent a chill down my spine."
-- Chris Willman, Eagle Rock
resident and TERA member
"What a great pleasure to meet
you this morning! I am excited to be a
part of such an artistic community and very much look forward to contributing
to the overall esthetic awareness in the area.
I would like to meet for lunch sometime soon to discuss how I may be
involved with your organization and help with its purposes. Let me know when would be good for you. Sincerely --"
-- Tim Yalda, owner of Designer
Framing, a needed business soon to be occupying the front section of the Blas
Auto Glass site at Townsend and Colorado [more art on the boulevard!], and new
TERA member
"Thanks for all your hard work
-- Eagle Rock truly is looking better every day."
-- Art Mattox, Eagle Rock resident,
former LA Police Commissioner, and TERA member
"I greatly admire TERA --
especially because it unites businesses and residents in the common goal of
creating a better Eagle Rock. (I
receive your newsletter, my brother and his family live in ER, and I conduct
business in ER, so I have seen for myself the positive changes.)
I am wondering how you managed to
organize TERA (besides the hard work that went into the organization). I am interested because it seems to be a
wonderful model that could be duplicated elsewhere.
Would you be able to take the time
to talk with me -- at your convenience -- about TERA? I would greatly appreciate your insight.
PS. You may recall that I served as
project manager for the LACC Satellite Location Viability and Student Demand
Study -- at the former Van de Kamp's site.
Thank you for your support on that project."
-- Katherine Padilla, west Pasadena
resident and TERA aficionado
