Ballots for two candidates for TERA's Board of Directors have been
mailed and should be in your mail boxes already, or will be soon. This
year there are two excellent candidates on the ballot.
Renate Kofahl is the Director of Marketing at Pankow, a large
design-build contracting firm headquartered in Pasadena. She has over 20
years of experience in the architecture and development industry,
directing branding, public relations, marketing and communications
programs. She moved to Los Angeles from Seattle with her husband, a
California native, four years ago. She feels very lucky to have Eagle Rock
as her home base from which she can participate in her new city and
community. Since moving to Los Angeles, she has served on the American
Institute of Architects Los Angeles Awards Gala Sponsorship Committee, the
TERA Home Tour Committee and is an active member of the Society for
Marketing Professional Services. She has a Bachelor of Arts from Rice
University and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of
Houston. Renate is currently in charge of TERA Memberships.
Richard Puz is a small (internet) business owner and a public
relations/public affairs consultant. He moved to Eagle Rock ten years ago,
in 1997, after living in downtown Los Angeles, Claremont, California,
Pittsburgh, PA, and various places in his native New York. Though his
wife, Monica Brendt, and he have been TERA members for several years, last
year they became involved with the group through their work on the
Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour Committee. This year, as co-chair of the
TERA Home Tour, he was asked to serve on the TERA Board.
As a "boomer", he says he's been around for a while, spending his early
professional life in journalism and college / university public relations.
Subsequently, for newly two decades, he held a number of public affairs
positions at Southern California Gas Co. That changed in 1999 when a
friend and he started a niche specialty lighting company (www.lampcraft.com),
although he continues to do some writing and public affairs consulting.
Both candidates are excellent additions to the TERA Board of Directors.
Members who receive ballots are urged to mark them and mail them back in
the envelope that is enclosed with the ballot.
In addition to ballots, TERA membership envelopes were sent out a
little while back. The TERA membership year is from July 1 through June
30th, every year. We depend on your membership dues to help support our
activities throughout the year. Without you, there is no TERA. Please
renew your membership either on-line at the TERA web page (http://www.tera90041.
org) or by returning the membership envelope to us.
Thank you for your continuing support.

Highland Park
Farmers Market |
 |
Seth Budick writes:
Unlike supermarkets, farmers markets are, by their nature,
unpredictable. When your supply chain stretches across the county rather
than the hemisphere, you have to expect to be surprised by what our local
farmers have coaxed from the ground each week. That's why this past week
was particularly exciting, as Gama farms brought beautiful oyster
mushrooms to the market for the first time. Even without a fancy recipe
and just sauteed with a bit of olive oil and garlic, the fleshy, earthy
mushrooms make an absolutely delicious and supremely simple addition to
your favorite pasta.
Besides the mushrooms, ZRanch brought sweet honeydew melons to the
market for the first time and cherries, sweet corn, artichokes and
strawberries all continue to go strong as well. ZRanch's miniature Indian
eggplants called to me last week and ending up with far too many, I
improvised a couple of very simple, but delicious recipes that make great
simple dinners or side dishes. Toss some 1/2" cubes of eggplant with olive
oil and then roast them for 10-15 minutes, until the crispy cubes dissolve
into a custardy puddle in your mouth. Toss with either a touch more olive
oil, crumbled feta and chopped mint, or a mixture of soy sauce and sugar
(2:1) that you've reduced slightly over low heat along with some pressed
garlic.
Roast 1-2 chopped jalapenos along with the eggplant for a bit of a
kick.
Broccoli, spinach, lettuce and too much else to list is also available
at the market these days, take a look at http:
//www.friends4oldlafarmersmarket.org for a complete list as well as
recipe ideas and nutritional info. If you can, try to make it to the
market early this week and bring the little ones for a performance by the
storytelling troupe We Tell Stories. After the show, pick up some roasted
corn and potatoes, tamales or rotisseried chicken for dinner.
Please stop by the market for fresh, field-ripened, high quality
produce from local farmers and spend time with your friends, neighbors and
other community members.
The Highland Park Certified Farmers Market is located adjacent to the
Highland Park Gold Line station at Marmion Way between Ave. 57 & 58
and operates Tuesdays from 3-8PM.

Subject: RE: jury duty
Please Tharp!
A little less self aggrandizement and a little more editing.
Love,
the S.W. Eagle Rock Jurors
Busted by Rusina! And here I was, because I had such a good time on
jury duty, trying to promote myself so I could get picked for jury duty
again next year. But you saw right through my clever ploy.
