1. CALLING ALL ARTISTS -- "SCENES OF EAGLE ROCK" EXHIBITION COMING
YOUR WAY
In conjunction with our Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour
to take place November 6, TERA is hosting an art exhibition entitled "Scenes of
Eagle Rock."
Billed in years past as a strictly plein-air show with
limited media, we have decided to open it up to any medium, any location,
indoors or out, as long as it's in Eagle Rock. Yep, that's the only
requirement. We feel this will invite far more interesting and unusual
entries, and we want all you creative types to participate! It truly makes
our Home Tour one of a kind.
The exhibit will be held at the wonderful
gallery Carlotta's Passion in Eagle Rock. Participating artists will be
invited to paint, sculpt, photograph, or use whatever is their chosen medium
along the tour route the day of the Home Tour and to display their work at our
infamous post-tour party. The celebration will take place at the Center
for the Arts, Eagle Rock, thanking our many Home Tour volunteers, and, of
course, our artists.
For more information on "Scenes of Eagle Rock,"
contact Lori Pond at pond@artnet.net or (323)
630-3311.
If you'd like to volunteer for our Home Tour (always
fun, and a great party!), please contact Teri Aranguren at tacpa@pacbell.net or (323) 337-4441.
2. "IT'S ALL ABOUT THE SAUCE!" -- DANTE'S CHICKEN & RIBS IS NOW
OPEN!
The long-awaited Dante's Chicken & Ribs, Eagle
Rock's newest restaurant, opened a few weeks ago, and it's open every day for
lunch and dinner!
Located at 2006 Colorado Boulevard between Zation
and Carlotta's Passion, Dante's offers outstanding barbecue with a soulful Cajun
twist. You can order full dinners with great sides (see below); pork ribs
only (with you meatniks in mind); savory sandwiches including pulled pork, BBQ
chicken, and cheeseburgers with chipotle or jalapeño mayo and more (grilled
onions!); piquant, refreshing salads; saucy chicken wings; and littler bites,
called "Little Piglets," that are a bit easier on the little
ones.
Sauces are awesome -- select from House or Sweet Heat for
ribs, or, for wings, Mild, Hot, or Fire Station 42 (in honor of our local
firehouse and its revered custodians). Dante himself spent many, many
months researching and developing all kinds of BBQ sauces before deciding which
ones he considers the very best to offer Eagle Rock!
Sides include
collard greens, cole slaw, fresh-cut fries, potato salad, and sweet hickory
beans. Yum!
Dante's "Need no teeth to eat our meat!" Chicken & Ribs
Open every day from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

I don't
know about you, but I'm hungry!
3. ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY LOCAL CLEANERS NEEDS NEW
LOCATION
Eagle Rock's important environmental success story --
Sunny Brite Natural Cleaners, located at 4927 Eagle Rock Boulevard -- is needing
to relocate by the end of July and has been looking in Eagle Rock and
surrounding communities for a new location.
Sunny Brite Cleaners made the
switch a few years ago from a chemical-based dry cleaning system to a non-toxic
cleaning method, professional wet cleaning. Her store has served as a
showcase and demonstration site for hundreds of visitors and officials and has
been featured prominently in various publications. Occidental College's
Pollution Prevention Education and Research Center has also evaluated Sunny's
shop (and several others) that shows that this environmental business is a
successful and viable operation and presents a number of key environmental
benefits to customers, workers, the cleaner and our community.
If
anyone has a lead regarding a possible site for the cleaner, no less than 1500
square feet and likely larger, please contact Peter Sinshimer or Angela Namkoong
at 323-259-1420 or 323-259-1457 or namkoong@oxy.edu.
4. EAGLE ROCK'S CROSS & BROWN MAKES IT ON DAILY
CANDY!
The June 24, 2005, issue of Daily Candy http://www.dailycandy.com featured Eagle Rock's
own Cross & Brown General Store! Many thanks to TERA member Maria
Nazario for bringing the story to our attention:
Cross to Bear
The good old days are long
gone.
Old folks brag about trudging miles through the snow, skipping
down cobblestone streets, and the giddy thrill of the penny candy
store.
Meanwhile, what do you get? Road rage, crappy cell phone
connections, and red dye No. 6.
Co-opt your elders' sweetest memories
at Cross & Brown. The Eagle Rock shop is the boutique incarnation of
a Norman Rockwell painting touched up for 2005. The countertops and
pharmacy shelves are lined with candy jars and filled with baskets of beauty
products, fine papers, hand-painted dishes, and homemade
housewares.
But this isn't June Cleaver's general store - unless, of
course, June had a thing for Seda France candles and depression glass.
And, like the vintage finds, the price tags will bring you back to the
days of yore: Jasmine soaps and card games are just some of the things that go
for a buck.
So browse to your heart's content - and think how someday
you'll be able to tell the kiddies all about the time you and Johnny shared a
root beer float down at the soda fountain.
Or at least about the time
you split a Slurpie.
Cross & Brown General Store,
5024 Eagle Rock Boulevard, between Merton and Chickasaw Avenues, Eagle Rock,

sounds far.)
"Just the two of us. Two voices, one guitar.
Brave and foolhardy, just the way I like it," says Rivera, whose band
usually plays much, much, much louder. The full band is playing shows in
Laguna Beach this summer, including a benefit for Laguna Beach landslide
victims. Drop by. You haven't left for the weekend quite
yet.
Seven Hills Cafe, 9925 Commerce Avenue, Tujunga, CA 91040.

DESCRIPTION:
John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, and the Technicolor Irish countryside star
in John Ford's 1952 film "The Quiet Man," which screens Wednesday, July 6 at
8:00 p.m. at the historic Orpheum Theatre. This final evening of the Los
Angeles Conservancy's 2005 Last Remaining Seats film series will also feature
a live Irish dance performance and a tribute to legendary theater organist Bob
Mitchell.
Now in its nineteenth year, Last Remaining
Seats presents classic films as they were meant to be seen: in beautiful
historic movie palaces, accompanied by live music, vintage newsreels, cartoon
and film shorts, and other entertainment. What started in 1987 as a way to
raise awareness of Los Angeles' neglected historic theaters has grown into a
summer tradition that brings the glamour of Hollywood's Golden Age to thousands
of longtime fans and newcomers each year.
"The Quiet Man" is the last
of six films in this year's series. John Wayne and director John Ford teamed
up an eighth time for this charming story of a retired boxer (Wayne) who,
following a tragedy in the ring, retreats to the small Irish town of his birth.
Instead of the peace and quiet he seeks, Wayne finds and falls for redheaded
spitfire Maureen O'Hara -- and faces increasingly complicated circumstances
involving her family, her dowry, and her pride. What starts as a quiet film
escalates into an action-packed brawl through the streets of the village,
revealing Wayne's unexpected flair for comedy. Filmed on location in glorious
Technicolor, "The Quiet Man" also stars the lush countryside of Ireland, a rare
sight on the big screen.
Before the film is a traditional Irish dance
performance by 20 members of the Cleary Irish Dance group, who range in age from
7 to 19. Legendary theater organist Bob Mitchell will also perform on the
Orpheum Theatre's original Mighty Wurlitzer Organ, installed in 1928 and the
last great theater organ remaining on Broadway. Following the performance is a
screening of "40 Boys and a Song," a 1941 Academy Award-nominated short
documentary on the famous Robert Mitchell Boys' Choir, founded in
1934.
The program takes place at the historic Orpheum Theatre on
downtown's Broadway, built in 1926 as the fourth and final home in Los Angeles
for the famous Orpheum vaudeville circuit. Designed by G. Albert Lansburgh,
the Orpheum has an opulent design reminiscent of the Paris Opera House. This
grand theater was beautifully restored in 2001 by owner Steve Needleman, and now
thrives with live entertainment, awards shows, special events, and
filming.
Advance tickets for "The Quiet Man" are $16 ($13 for Los
Angeles Conservancy members and groups of ten or more). Any tickets
remaining on the night of the event will be sold at the door for $18. For
details, visit http://www.laconservancy.org or
call (213) 430-4219.

10. ROCK LEADERSHIP AND SUMMER SCHEDULE
There¹s new
leadership at the ROCK Teen Center. When summer school begins July 6,
teens arriving at the ROCK after classes will be greeted by two new faces,
Tracey Brown and Mitch McKinley, the new co-directors, who have planned a full
summer activity schedule during the program hours, 12:30 to 4 PM. The summer
schedule includes music and dance classes, chess club, basketball, computer
games, and foosball and pool tournaments. Homework coaches and the computer lab
will also be available Monday through Thursday from July 6 though August 16.
Tracey was born in Cairo, IL and attended college at DePaul University
in Chicago, IL, where she majored in Psychology and minored in Sociology.
Upon completing her BA she moved to Pasadena, CA to study theology and prepare
for full time ministry at Fuller Theological Seminary from which she recently
graduated with a Master of Divinity. Over the past 7 years, Tracey has
worked with church youth groups, after school programs, summer camps, in
different roles serving youth their families and the community at large.
Mitch was born and raised in Fort Wayne, IN and attended Southwestern
Assemblies of God University just outside Dallas Texas, where he majored in
Church Ministries with a focus on Youth Ministry. During his time in college,
Mitch held many on-campus volunteer leadership positions, as well as a volunteer
youth pastor for an urban church plant. It is Mitch and Tracey¹s vision to
build upon the already solid foundation laid here at the ROCK and spread its
good works across Northeast Los Angeles.
ROCK, which was originally
organized in 1999, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit volunteer organization, born out of
the community¹s need for teen services. The organization is dedicated to
improving the lives and character of community youth, between the ages of
12 and 19, through the teen center and its programs. The center, located
at 1597 Yosemite Drive in Eagle Rock, provides the only free, drop-in, learning
and skills development programs within the community, specifically for teens.
Although ROCK is a faith-based organization, no proselytizing occurs on
the site.

12. LETTERS AND E.MAILS -- SUPPORT DR. MUSIC!
"Hi
Friends,
I've recently learned about a great little music store in Eagle
Rock called Dr. Music, just down a bit from Trader Joe's on Colorado. The guy
there says he's going under, and that moving to Northeast Los Angeles from
Pasadena, where he was in business for 20 years, is the worst thing he ever did.
He says that nobody from Pasadena comes there because they think Eagle Rock is a
scary neighborhood, and that there are no artists or musicians in Northeast LA
to support the store. I told him he was wrong, we just don't know about him. I
certainly didn't know about the store, which is fabulous. Well, I'm officially
spreading the word.
The store is right next to the new Renaissance
Charter School (former Pillers building), and the kids and parents at that
school use the store and love it. I've attached a note from one of the parents
about the store.
So if you've been meaning to start lessons for your
child or for yourself, buy sheet music, buy acoustic instruments or amps, have
instruments repaired, or any of the other things you'd use a music store to do,
please think of Dr. Music and support a local business.
http://drxmusic.com/
Thanks for supporting
them!
Shawna Selline, a Mt. Washington resident and wonderful person, and
a member of the Carlin G Park Advisory Board (if I'm not mistaken) has written
this testimonial:
Dear Dr. Music,
I have a family of musicians and I am
writing today to compliment Dr Music for the many times they've had exactly
what we needed with informed salespeople to help us.
Here are some
examples:
My daughter wanted to take guitar lessons. No problem, they
have a wonderful guitar teacher and the salesperson had a nice sounding 3/4
size guitar in stock for less than $100.
I am a professional harpist
and for the couples' special songs, Dr music has had the music in stock EVERY
TIME!
My son plays upright bass and wanted to get an electric
bass. We walked in and talked to Sharon who is a professional bassist
and violist. She helped us purchase the right bass for the right price.
She continues to be informative, enthusiastic and fun!
My husband
received an old banjo for Christmas. It needed TLC and Dr music was able
to repair it for next to nothing. Likewise, we needed an old mandolin
repaired and we had it back and singing in no time. For specialized or major
repairs, they are able to refer people to local specialists.
They have
an on staff percussionist who has helped us with sticks, pads, stands and new
drum heads. My friend also bought me a beautiful little djembe for my
birthday.
Dr Music has been so helpful, the people are great, the
store is open and airy and they have a fantastic selection of music and
instruments.
Sincerely,
Shawna Selline"
