Thanks to my neighbor Michael Groszkruger for letting me know that Westfield Shopping Town, Eagle Rock, has been acquired by another Australian firm, Centro Properties Group. Following are excepts from the press release announcing the transaction:
“The Westfield Group (ASX: WDC) announced today that it has entered into agreements to divest eight (8) US non-strategic assets, raising US$550 million in separate transactions with Centro Properties Group (ASX: CNP) and Somera Capital Management.
“The Group has entered into a series of agreements with Centro for the sale of two (2) centres and the contribution of an additional five (5) centres to new investment vehicles managed and controlled by Centro, with Westfield retaining a minority limited partner interest in the investment vehicles of approximately 5%.
"We have a history of working well with Centro and are pleased that we were able to complete a transaction that is beneficial for both companies," said Peter Lowy.
“The transactions are expected to close within 60 days and are subject to certain conditions which should be satisfied over the next 30 days.

Recruiting for ERHS Academic Decathlon
Will your son/daughter be the next champion?
The Academic Decathlon, the premiere national scholastic competition for high school students, was created to provide opportunities for students to experience the challenges of rigorous team and individual academic competition.
Each student competes in ten events, which are Economics, Essay, Art, Interview, Language and Literature, Math, Music, Science, Social Science and Speech. Each year the Science or Social Science topic is used as the Super Quiz topic. The competition format of the Super Quiz differs from that of the other subject areas. While students take one written test in each of the other six subjects, they will take two tests in the Super Quiz subject: one written and the other oral. The oral relay portion of the Super Quiz, which is televised live from UCLA, is the only part of the actual testing that is open to the public, and it is one of the most memorable and exciting parts of the Academic Decathlon competition.
The ten-event academic program strives to foster a greater respect for knowledge, to promote wholesome inter-school academic competition, and to further develop student communication skills. A unique aspect of the Academic Decathlon is that it is designed to include students from all academic abilities and achievement levels.
Each nine-member team consists of three A (Honor division), three B (Scholastic division), and three C or below (Varsity division) students. Each team member competes in all ten events against other students in their individual divisions. These three levels ensure that students from various academic backgrounds can compete fairly.
Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded for individual events and total scores. Overall individual winners are recognized, as are champion teams. The broad base of awards allows for major recognition of academic accomplishment. Our team can advance through local and state levels of competition. The state champions compete at the national finals.
The curricular theme for 2006-2007 will be China and Its Influence on the World. Following is some general information on the topics in each of the subject areas.
SUPER QUIZ: The Super Quiz topic will be An Introduction to Climatology. The Super Quiz curriculum will include a climate case study focused on China. The Super Quiz Resource Guide will include readings on such topics as weather and climate, historical evidence of past climate variability, factors that control climate, climates on other planets, the greenhouse effect and human impact on climate change, and the impact of climate change on human activity.
LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE: The language and literature curriculum will include critical reading, one novel and six poems. The featured novel will be The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck.
ART: The art curriculum topic will be the art of China, and the curriculum will include the study of eighteen selected artworks. Seventeen of the selected artworks are from the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. One of the artworks is a work of architecture that is located in China.
MUSIC: The music curriculum will focus on the music of China. The Music Resource Guide will cover such topics as traditional Chinese music, Chinese instruments and musical genres, the influence of Western music on Chinese music, and the influence of Chinese music on Western music. The curriculum will include a companion CD, featuring eighteen listening selections.
SOCIAL SCIENCE: The social science curriculum will provide students with an introduction to the history of the People's Republic of China. The Social Science Resource Guide will include discussion on such topics as the founding and first years of the People's Republic, Mao and Maoism, the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, and the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989.
ECONOMICS: The economics curriculum will focus on fundamentals of economics, including general topics in macro- and microeconomics and international trade and global economic development. The economics curriculum will also include a thematic section focused on the development of a market economy in China.
Team members will work together in class as well as after school and during breaks to prepare for the rigorous competition. The study season begins in late May with competition beginning in November. An honors humanity course with an Academic Decathlon focus will be offered in the fall semester. Students who are interested in competing may try out for the team by seeing Mr. Laird in room S-6. Mr. Laird’s email is glennlaird@earthlink.net and phone number is (323) 254-6891 x137

The ERNC Community Bulletin reports:
LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT HAS DISPATCHED BICYCLE PATROLS IN EAGLE ROCK Thanks to ERNC’s Jim Perry for this public safety information. The Newton Division of the Los Angeles Police Department has dispatched a bicycle patrol in Eagle Rock to increase visibility around Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevard. Over the next few days you may notice more of a Police presence in the area. Several parking meter areas along Eagle Rock Boulevard have been marked with temporary NO PARKING signs in front of local businesses in possible anticipation of high profile visitors or events. Background of the Bicycle Coordination Unit (BCU): In the 1970's, a limited number of bicycles for patrol along the Venice Beach area were used to increase visibility during peak seasons. In the 1980's, the use of bicycles expanded to include community-based policing and increased visibility in congested areas of the city, and by 1990, most areas were utilizing bicycles.
In response to the increasing number of bicycles used for patrol, the department established the Bicycle Coordination Unit (BCU). The BCU is responsible for organizing the bicycle patrol units and maintaining the department’s bicycle fleet. Today, between 200 and 250 bicycle officers are deployed on a daily basis in all 18 Areas of the LAPD. Approximately 1,500 officers have completed the LAPD Bicycle Patrol School, which provides officers with five days of intensive, certified training in pursuit bicycle handling, bicycle safety, night patrol techniques, shooting, and maintenance. Officers have easier access to congested areas than officers in motor vehicles and cover a larger area than officers on foot. Bicycles offer an effective approach to crime surveillance due to their decreased visibility. Community and public relations have been improved through the use of bicycles; the improved public interaction has helped improve officer morale, as well as decreased sick-time, while increasing productivity. In some situations, bicycle patrols have proven to be more cost-effective than motor vehicles.
Bicycle Patrol Duties include: Patrol support, response to calls for service, gang suppression, narcotics enforcement, traffic enforcement, community policing, special details, bicycle safety education, special events, undercover surveillance. Bicycles provide tremendous air quality and public health benefits. Under the Bike Patrols for Clean Air Grant, it is anticipated that the use of bicycles in patrol applications will generate a reduction of over 1.5 million vehicle miles traveled. In most instances, the bicycles replace motor vehicles for patrol up to eight hours per day or longer. For example, the LAPD average vehicle mileage is 18,000 miles/year. Two bicycles replace one motor vehicle, and 85 bicycles replace 42.5 vehicles. The estimated number of vehicle miles traveled is reduced by 1,035,000 (as estimated by the SCAQMD). In season at the Highland Park Farmers Market: The first few weeks in June probably provide the greatest variety of fruits for the season, so please try to make it out to the market and enjoy all the delicious choices. Wonderful late season strawberries have been coming in from the Oxnard area where the recent heat has really sweetened up the berries. If you're a little tired of eating them straight or with your cereal in the morning, you can make a delicious sorbet by freezing 4 cups of berries and then pureeing them in a food processor with 5 tablespoons of sugar and a 1/4 cup of water. Return the puree to the freezer until firm enough to scoop and you have a wonderful, all natural and refreshing dessert for these hot days (recipe from http://www.epicuri ous.com).
This week we saw our first Rainier cherries of the season. Rainier cherries are the light red and yellow cherries while the California Bing cherry has a deep red color. Everyone has their own preference when it comes to cherry variety, but the growing conditions can also have a huge effect on flavor, so try out fruits from different vendors and make up your own mind.
To top it all off, stone fruits continue to flood into the market this week. In addition to the apricots, peaches and nectarines that we've had at the market for the last few weeks, the first plums of the season have now been spotted coming in from our Central Valley and High Desert growers. Again, don't be afraid to sample a wide variety of fruit. Tasting before you buy is one of the great things about farmers markets.
Late season avocados are still coming into the market, along with the last of the citrus, so why not make some guacamole and enjoy it with a fresh- squeezed orange juice margarita (a delicious combination I can assure you). You can also be sure that potatoes, onions, garlic, organic eggs, and fresh bread will be available as well as delicious rotisseried chicken and tamales, so pick up dinner at the market. This week, we also welcomed a shave ice vendor to the market, so don't let the warm temperatures keep you away!
Please stop by the market for fresh, field-ripened, high quality produce from local farmers and spend time with your friends, neighbors and other community members. The Highland Park Certified Farmers Market is located adjacent to the Highland Park Gold Line station at Marmion Way between Ave. 57 & 58 and operates Tuesdays from 3- 8 pm. Visit the market website at http://www.oldla.org. Also visit http://www.its.caltech.edu/~sbudick to see where your produce is coming from!

VIRGINIA PAULSON
Hi Michael,
Perhaps Amy can get help from her ERNC district rep to help her cut thought the red tape of the city. I had asked for the assistance from my district rep with regards to getting speed humps installed on my street, and she was able to give me some guidance.
Steve Faust
Thank you Steve. I certainly should have made that suggestion to Amy. The Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council is set up to deal with issues such as obtaining speed bumps, developments in the neighborhood, broken sidewalks and a miriad of other local issues. One of the first steps any person or business should take, especially when dealing with the City Bureaucracy, is to contact their Neighborhood Council Representative.
