HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO EVERYONE! June gloom seems to have slipped into
Eagle Rock a little early this year, making for nice, cool mornings
(always appreciated by those of us who walk or jog in the a.m.) and sunny,
pleasant afternoons. And it’s late enough in the year to actually have a
little sunshine in which to enjoy the yard after work, unless the freeway
gods dictate that you shall be stuck in traffic. But since this is a
special Friday, feel free to take off a few hours early to celebrate my
birthday. Be sure to let me know if you need a note from me to your boss,
wife, loved one or significant other excusing your absence.
May is one of my favorite months. It’s officially spring almost
everywhere and there’s always a lot going on. Much of the rest of the
world celebrates May Day, and in addition to Karl Marx and I celebrating
birthdays on May 5th, students of Mexican History celebrate a major
victory of Miguel Hidalgo over the French in Mexico’s fight for
independence. I’ll toast that Miguel tonight with some amber gold
distilled by mi hermano de alma, Jose Cuervo. And at the end of May is
Memorial Day, which heralds a gentle three week slide into the official
beginning of summer.
But between Cinco de Mayo and Memorial Day is Saturday, May 20th, from
9:00 a.m. to noon, when TERA is holding a double celebration in honor of
the official opening of the Eagle Rockdale Community Garden and to express
its appreciation to the TERA membership. All are invited, and as those who
regularly attend TERA’s quarterly community meetings are well aware, TERA
Board Member Keith Louie always manages to obtain great food and
refreshments from some of Eagle Rock’s best eating establishments.
As of this writing, there are still a few garden plots available so
those who like the feel of dirt under their finger nails in the summer
time should come check them out. Also, this is an opportunity to explore a
little seen, lovely corner of Eagle Rock. This neighborhood has reclaimed
unimproved transit right-of-way, turning it into a gravel parking lot with
beautiful landscaping, just north of neighborhood vest pocket Shelby
Lanark Park, an emerald jewel showing the way into the Eagle Rockdale
Community Garden, just south of the park. Neighbors living adjacent to the
garden have planted poppies and sweet peas along the fence bordering the
garden, creating a riot of spring colors. The Theodore Payne Foundation
has a demonstration garden of native plants on the east side of the garden
slope and in the raised beds of the gardeners, fruits and vegetables are
starting to make their appearances. There is a unique entry sign at the
north end of the garden, created by local artist Kacy Treadway to welcome
all visitors.
We hope you will make plans to join us in celebrating the official
opening of the Eagle Rockdale Community Garden and Art Park and in showing
appreciation for TERA’s members and their contributions to our community.

I was the Anonymous Westbound Runner noted at the Intro of the Apr 28
Tera e.letter....
Too many of my morning nods tend to go unreciprocated these days.
While my knees have not allowed me an 8 minute pace for some time
now...I am indebted to your embellishments.
Thanks for the e.letter. and to TERA for making Eagle Rock a better
community.
Paul Horn Eagle Rock
Unfortunately, probably no one's going to be racing to beat you to pick
up trash so you can probably just let my slight exageration of your speed
go unchallenged. Thanks again for your thoughtfulness.
MT
my wife and i constantly pick up trash on our walks. We used to have
tons of jim's burgers trash in front of our house and we still get tommy's
trash. People are pigs!
bmcpherson
Many are truly thoughtless, but thanks to the likes of you, your wife
and Paul Horn, there is a little less refuse blowing around the streets of
Eagle Rock.
I just wanted to let you know that your last e.letter was not received
until 9pm on April 28th and you told us about the tomato sale that Mary
Tokita was having, but it was on April 28th 12pm-4pm, so we were not able
to attend and very disappointed. If you are advertising something, please
try to get the info out before the event actually happens.
Thank you Stacey Hogue
I would have loved to go buy some tomoto's but I just got the email at
6PM
Maybe next time?
-TJ Welch
My apologies to disappointed tomato buyers. We do try to be timely but
sometimes events beyond our control, like evil bosses with no sympathy for
volunteer time committments, work deadlines, and computer crashes
intervene. But rest assured that those responsible had their salaries cut
in half and have been assigned to join Mr. Horn on litter patrol. Thanks
for understanding.
MT
This note of warning was sent in with a request for anonymnity.
Unfortunately, in these days of identity theft we all must learn to be
more careful.
Warning - On Thursday, April 27 at 7:30 AM, I witnessed a young man
looking through some of the mailboxes on my street in Eagle Rock. I have
reported this incident to the Post Office but encourage everyone to NOT
put outgoing mail in your mailbox.
