1. 120 YEARS OF CALIFORNIA PLEIN AIR ART SHOW EXTENDED THROUGH MAY
8
The "120 Years of California Plein Air" art show at Carlotta's
Passion Fine Art, located at 2012 Colorado Blvd. in Eagle Rock, has been
extended until Sunday, May 8.
"Plein air" work, by definition, is
done on site. The works usually depict landscapes or seascapes. There is a
very long history of plein air in Southern California. Many early plein
air painters lived along locally, along the arroyo. In the early part of
the 20th Century, a plein air artist collective existed in the Garvanza district
of Highland Park. Charles Lummis was intimately involved in promoting the
work of many of these artists.
The show includes works from 1886 to
present. It is worth seeing simply for 14 works by John A. Dominique, who
was a Santa Barbara and Ojai-based plein air artist for eighty years!
Dominique is exceptionally well listed. (Just do a Google search for
pages information about Dominique and his work.) His work is stunning and
highly collectible.
The participating contemporary artists include
graduates of the finest art colleges in the United States. Most of these
artists, including Judith Amdur, Alex Schaefer, Carol Putnam, Trish Kertes, Fei
Lu, Kevin D. Brown, James Osorio, J. Dudley Slay, Erin Rosen, Joseph Stevens,
and Felice Hrovat live within a 20 mile radius of Northeast Los Angeles.
Most of the artists have an award winning history.
Asking prices
for the remaining available plein air pieces range from $300 - $5,500. Many
prices are negotiable.
2. SUMMERıS COMING, AND SO ARE COMMUNITY GARDEN
WORKDAYS
Beginning this lovely month of May, the Eagle Rockdale

Vons).
The Gardenıs additional workdays will be held on a Saturday of

week's e.letter. All participantsı work will contribute needed hours
toward the matching grant to complete Phase 1, and create a space for local

Museum, 6045 York Boulevard in Highland Park. Guest speakers expected

4. EAGLE ROCK FEATURED IN BOOKS BY NOTED BUNGALOW AUTHOR JANE
POWELL!
Jane Powell, author of Bungalow Kitchens and
Bungalow Bathrooms, has two new books, both of which contain many photos
of Eagle Rock houses, both interiors and exteriors. "Bungalow Details:
Exterior" even has a shot of Bill and Jackie Stutz's "Tower of Power"
(arroyo-stone light pedestal in front of the Hanson D. Puthuff House) on the
front cover! The Women's Twentieth Century Club is shown "Bungalow: The
Ultimate Arts and Crafts Home." My former home in Eagle Rock, the Hare
House, got good coverage in both books, and I think of all of you fondly
whenever I look at the pictures.
All of these books are beautiful and
contain vital information for anyone who owns a bungalow.
We are doing
great here in Tampa! Joanne Turner and I will be writing a piece called
"East Meets West" to submit to American Bungalow, which will be a comparison of
my new community, Old Seminole Heights, and my former community, Eagle
Rock.
I miss you all and look forward to seeing you when I come out later
this year for the Home Tour!
-- Suzanne Prieur, former Eagle Rock
resident and TERA Board member

9. LETTERS AND E.MAILS
"Dear Joanne,
I
remember when I first bought the house on La Roda in'88 and got some note on my
door some years later to try to avert the building of McDonald's where
Blockbuster is now -- it was the first time I felt that someone was really
speaking to me artistically about how I wanted Eagle Rock to look -- and I
responded by making sure my feelings were heard. I believe it was you
[yes, it was]. If so, your energies have been truly appreciated.
Yes, it's true that your vision for Eagle Rock is coming
around."
-- Patricia Amdur, Eagle Rock resident
"Young Ian Turner
was the sleeper of the evening [at the TERA Member Appreciation Meeting].
He has a quiet, unassuming demeanor which leaves room for a powerful
inspiration to flow through into artful interpretations of very sophisticated
jazz music. Even though he played the piano quietly intending to provide
background ambiance, I found myself leaving a conversation once or twice to
simply look over at him because I was so touched by the personal phrasing of
familiar great pieces. I will predict here that it won't be long before
Mr. Turner's artistry will be the focal point of an entire evening of music.
He's truly got it."
-- Kathleen Long, Eagle Rock resident and TERA
Vice President
"Dear Ms. Turner,
I moved to Eagle Rock in November
and commented to a neighbor just last week that in my six months living here I
have not seen a single police car in Eagle Rock. Lo and behold, last
Saturday night, Colombo's was robbed at gun point, and tonight, May 3, a person
was shot during a hold up at Tommy's.
Honestly, I am thinking of moving
out of the community. Is there any chance that a meeting of the
association could be called to organize an appeal to the city to get more police
coverage?
Also, would you add me to your newsletter list. Thank-you
--"
-- Lisa Karahalios, Eagle Rock resident
[Editor's note:
I heard just this morning that Albertson's was also hit. Regarding
this and the other incidents of crime in Eagle Rock, we at TERA are aware, very
concerned and engaged in fact finding and will let our membership and e.letter
readers know what role the TERA board will commit to as we know more about the
realities of this extremely important issue. In the meantime, everyone
please attend the LAPD Northeast Division Basic Car District Meeting May 18,
described in item 4 above.]
