It’s election time, not only for state and local candidates, issues and
ballot measure, but for TERA Board members as well. This year there are
four candidates for the TERA Board. TERA members will be mailed ballots
with return envelopes within the next few weeks. This year’s candidates
for election consist of two continuing Board member nominees who are
standing for election to a full term and two new Board member nominees.
TERA Board terms are for three years. More complete biographies of the
candidates will be mailed out with the ballots.
Continuing Board member nominee Pauline Mauro currently works for The
Capital Group Companies, which is the third largest money management firm
in the United States. Her primary job responsibilities include researching
media investments for Capital’s equity and debt analysts in the United
States, Europe, and Asia. She earned her designation as Chartered
Financial Analyst in 1995. Pauline also graduated from UCLA in 1992 with a
BA in English Literature.
Eagle Rock attracted Pauline and her husband Pete because of its
family-friendly small town atmosphere in a diverse, urban setting, with a
nice mix of architecture. She looks forward to supporting responsible and
positive community development. Pauline wears many hats for TERA. She is
currently TERA’s treasurer, co-chairs the Eagle Rock Eclectic Home Tour,
is in charge of membership and serves as volunteer coordinator.
Continuing Board member nominee Frank Parrello has been an Eagle Rock
resident since 1978. He and his wife Heather live in the Blackmer/Wilson
home which is reputed to have been built as the model home for the
Silverwood’s Happyland subdivision. Frank is a preservation and
development consultant and has worked on projects ranging from the
conversion of Downtown’s Subway Terminal Building to urban apartments to
the rehabilitation of the historic buildings and adding new affordable
housing units at Christ Fath Mission in Highland Park.
Frank was a founding member of the Highland Park Heritage Trust and is
currently Co-chair of TERA’s Preservation, Planning and Development
Committee. In addition, Frank serves as Treasurer of the California
Preservation Foundation.
New Board member nominee Maria Nazario earned a Bachelors degree in
Business Administration and is a Certified Association Executive. She
works as Associate Director of Member Relations with the California
Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Maria’s volunteer activities include working in many capacities with
the American Red Cross, where she has chaired the San Gabriel Valley
Chapter’s Audit Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Emergency
Services Committee, and serves as a member of the California Information
Technology Committee and the California State Disaster Project Oversight
Committee.
Maria is a member of TERA’s Finance Committee and also co-chairs TERA’s
Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour Committee. She also has a great and
beautiful puppy appropriately named Oso.
New Board member nominee Theresa Wahl is the chef and owner of Eagle
Rock’s great restaurant, Auntie Em’s Kitchen and Catering. She moved into
the neighborhood about five years ago and opened Auntie Em’s about four
years ago. Theresa has had a vision of exactly what she wanted to bring to
the community; a restaurant that would feed the neighborhood seasonal,
tasty food, concentrating on local ingredients and supporting local
farmers and creameries.
The community has embraced Auntie Em’s which has made all of her hard
work worth it. She has seen Eagle Rock change dramatically over the last
five years. Young families are moving to Eagle Rock to raise the next
generation. She looks forward to participating on the TERA Board to make a
positive difference in Eagle Rock.
The TERA Board has interviewed all of the candidates, reviewed their
qualifications, and recommends that each of the four nominees be elected
to the Board. We are all fortunate to have such highly qualified
candidates who are willing to volunteer to work for their community.
The Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce (ERCC) is also planning a busy
summer. On June 27th, the ERCC will be putting on Business Expo 2006. The
event will take place at the Women’s Twentieth Century Club of Eagle Rock,
5105 Hermosa Avenue, Eagle Rock, CA 90041, on Tuesday, June 27th, 2006
from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Businesses can purchase a booth for $50.00 to showcase their
business/products or they can provide business literature for $15.00, only
for the networking table.
Payment of $50.00 includes both space with a table, chair and linen,
advertisements announcing the event on the ERCC web-site, Boulevard
Sentinel, a mailer to the 90041 zip code, a banner on Colorado Blvd.,
during the week leading up to the event, and internal company e-mail
announcements. For an additional $10.00 electricity can be provided to the
booth for those who need it. Small businesses can purchase a booth
together. In addition, businesses can sell their merchandise or products
at the event. Restaurants can participate by providing a tray of food at
no charge at tables located outside showcasing a “Taste of Eagle Rock”.
Restaurant businesses pay with food samples in lieu of the $50.00 fee for
booth space.

Commerce, P.O. Box 41354, Eagle Rock, CA 90041. Phone: 323-254-9163. E-

Lawn Mower
Exchange |
 |
After the late season rains, the grass (or in my case, weeds) are
growing like crazy and, if not kept in check, there will soon be a jungle
habitat right here in Eagle Rock. TERA's mistress of the environment, Mary
Tokita, sends this reminder that one can have a neat yard and cleaner air
by taking advantage of the following offer from the AQMD:
The South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) is pleased to
offer to AQMD residents an opportunity to help clean the air by exchanging
an old, operable gasoline-powered lawn mower and purchasing a new Neuton
(tm) 24 volt cordless rechargeable electric mower for only $100 (sales tax
included). Pre-registration is required. There will be seven locations and
dates for the 2006 exchange events. htt

Angeleno
Heights Trolley Line |
 |
I remember some decades ago, when my working mother couldn't find a
baby sitter, and had to take me with her downtown. She'd catch the bus
near the intersection of Glen Oaks and Sunland Boulevards, and we'd ride
into Burbank, where we'd catch the red car into downtown. She worked at
the old subway terminal building. What happened to the Red Car? I
recommend watching "Who Killed Roger Rabbit" for an entertaining, if not
entirely factual depiction of the demise of mass transit in Los Angeles.
Now a group in Angeleno Heights is trying to reserect the trolley. Rich
Monk sends the following information:
Dear Trolley Supporter-
Angeleno Heights Trolley Line is prepared to make you a once in a
lifetime offer! We have successfully spent the past few years in preparing
the basic foundations of our volunteer nonprofit corporation. As many of
you know, we have become a well known force in the effort to revitalize
trolleys in Los Angeles.
We have recently received a bid for a "feasibility study" which is a
necessary and important requisite in carrying out our plans. It is now
time to move our project into a higher gear that will include funding this
study.
We are opening up positions in our organization that will help to make
this possible. Whether you are interested in filling a leadership role or
you have a special talent that would apply to our project, you now have a
chance to become part of the history of Los Angeles by helping to
establish our vintage electric trolley line.
We are looking for specialized talent in the following areas:
Fund raising and Grant Writing
Public Relations/Publicity
Contact with Private Sector and Government Officials
Or, let us know what you can offer or how you would like to help!
Feel free to forward this opportunity to anyone who may be interested,
including the members of any group to which you may belong.
Please contact us at ahtrolley@aol.c

Thank you.

Eagle Rock
Jr./Sr. High PTSA Message |
 |
From PTSA President-Elect Staci Mommii
As we approach the end of another great year at Eagle Rock Jr./Sr. High
School, I want to express my appreciation to Mai Moore, the outgoing PTSA
President, for her service and dedication to the PTSA during her tenure.
Together with Mai's amazing officers, Valerie Hoverson, Jeffrey Daniel and
Anne Richardson-Daniel, and board members. Eileen Hatrick and Cindy
Woodard, the PTSA is again providing insurance for Grad Nite. Throughout
the year, PTSA raised funds by selling concessions at dances to absorb the
cost of the insurance.
A special thank you to Valerie Hoverson, her sister, Debbie Padilla,
Cindy Woodard, Tammy Miller, Anne Richardson-Daniel and Nancy Cecconi for
hosting the wonderful Teacher Appreciation Brunch on behalf of the PTSA.
We must also acknowledge Anne Richardson-Daniel's efforts to bring the
PTSA into the 21st century. Thanks to Anne, the PTSA has a viable email
list, and Anne has graciously agreed to continue distributing the e-letter
next year. And without Marisela Cea, who organizes Grad Nite, our seniors
would not have wonderful memories of their special day and year.
Most importantly, we are especially grateful to all of the parents who
volunteered many hours to sit on various committees, attend meetings,
participate in the accreditation process, and help the PTSA. Parent
involvement is invaluable, and Eagle Rock is fortunate to have so many
parents who are concerned and passionate about the welfare and education
of every child.
As we look forward to the 2006-07 year, the PTSA will again be visible
at dances to raise funds for Grad Nite insurance. The incoming officers
will also look for other fundraising opportunities to provide scholarships
and other assistance to the teachers, students and parents. And, with
Anne's help, we will distribute an informative e-letter on a regular
basis.
Please look for membership envelopes to come home with your student in
September. We hope to substantially increase membership, attendance at
PTSA meetings, and participation in PTSA's activities next year.
Finally, we have established an email address for the PTSA: erhs.ptsa@
yahoo.com. Please send any inquiries, suggestions, etc. to the PTSA at
this email addresss. If you would like to be added to the PTSA e-letter
mailing list, please send us your name and email address.
We're looking forward to seeing you and your students in September.
Staci Momii
President-Elect, PTSA 2006-07

Samurai Shakespeare -- Macbeth at Eagle Rock High -- June 1, 2 and 3
Macbeth is a tale of passion, power and revenge. The tyrant Macbeth
(Carlo Estella) is driven by his greedy wife, Lady Macbeth (Melissa Chan),
to seize the throne. The forces of justice and retribution are set in
motion by Macduff (Raisa Donato), Malcolm (Anthony Madrid) and the other
knights of the realm.
As a tribute to the Filipino/Asian community of the Eagle Rock family,
Director Russell Copley sets the play in a pan-Asian world that reflects
the struggle between traditional martial arts doctrine and Macbeth's
infatuation with 1980's technology and fashion.

Threatened ADA
Suits Against ER Businesses |
 |
Our friends, Amelia and Camilo at Camilo's Bistro sent the
following:
Michael,
I am forwarding this attachment so that TERA may also help spread the
word to all of the businesses in our area. We have also been affected by
this lawsuit and hope that our fellow businesses do not get discouraged by
this unfortunate situation. Our community businesses should seek legal
advice and not let the persons behind this lawsuit extort us from
thousands of dollars.
Amelia and Camilo
Camilo's Bistro
The following article, by Tom Topping, from the Boulevard Sentinel
was attached to Amelia's and Camilo's letter and is reprinted below. I
fully support the requirements imposed by the Americans with Disabilities
Act (ADA). That being said, I also fully support our local businesses and
community members joining together to fight unscrupulous people bringing
causes of action without merit against businesses.
Colombo's Restaurant, Pete's Blue Chip, Ernie Jrs. and Troy Burgers Hit
Hard by Disabled Scam Suits-
BUSINESS OWNERS NEED TO READ THIS- IMPORTANT
by Tom Topping
In the last month or so, many local businesses have been threatened
with legal action over their supposed non-compliance with Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. A partial list includes Colombo's
restaurant, Pete's Blue Chip, Ernie Jrs. and Troy Burgers on York Blvd.
The businesses were threatened of the possible action by a letter
written on the letterhead of "J. Cohan & Associates, Disability Rights
Advocates." In the letters, which are sort of a personalized form letter,
alleged code violations existing at the targeted business are listed.
The letter then goes on to claim that the "Unruh Civil Rights Act'
provides for civil damages in the amount of $4,000 for each violation.
IF YOU GET A LETTER LIKE THIS DO NOT IGNORE IT!
Last year, several businesses in Highland Park were targeted including
Galco's Market (the soda pop place), Carrow's and Arco Iris Restaurant. In
the Galco's case, owner John Nese was advised by his attorney to
immediately address each one of the items listed, in this case it was to
repaint the striping of the handicap parking space. His lawyer called Mr.
Cohan, listed the corrections and Cohan agreed to drop the matter.
Troy's and Colombo's have both also addressed each one of their alleged
violations as well, and Cohan is trying to negotiate a settlement with
them. Pete's Blue Chip, unfortunately, chose to defy Mr. Cohan and was
rewarded with a small claims suit asking for $7500.
Here are a few tips:
(I'm not a lawyer- always consult with your own attorney first!)
1 If you are not required to have a public restroom at your business-
do not let any member of the public use it!
2 If you get a letter like the one described- do not ignore it! You
must answer the complaint. Correct the violations you can, and document
them in writing.
3 Send the letter of reply to Cohan (or whomever sent it) addressing
each one of the violations- explaining that they are corrected or why they
do not apply to you. (Henry Oheda of L.A. Building and Safety was able to
visit Colombo's and explain exactly what needed to be corrected, and what
did not. The council office might be able to help facilitate that. 323 254
5295)
4 If a lawsuit if filed against you, ANSWER THE COMPLAINT, ANSWER THE
COMPLAINT, ANSWER THE COMPLAINT, ANSWER THE COMPLAINT! (you can lose by
default if you do not)
I have done a primary seach of the court records of advocate Mr. Cohan,
and disabled persons Mr. McClaurey and Mr. Whitbread, whom the letters
were written on behalf of.
Although many people settled with Whitbread and gave him money, I only
found one record of him actually sueing anyone for the disabled
infractions. He lost.
The only record of McClaurey is the current suit against Pete's Blue
Chip.
But J. Cohan is another story altogether. He has sued in small claims
dozens of times, maybe more.
Court records show him filing up to eight small claims suits in one
day, back in 1996. (the small claims filing form now asks if the defendent
has filed more that 12 small claims suits in the last year or two in the
last year for over $2500- this may be why he now uses another person to
sue)
Other records show he has a good working knowledge of how to enforce a
judgement, in one case he garnished the entire checking account of an
elderly couple he got a judgement against.
More details will follow in the June issue of the Boulevard Sentinel.
PROTECT YOURSELF! I will be happy to talk more with anyone else
targeted.

Last week I ran a letter from Kathy Reagan inquiring whether the
used car lot near Colorado and Loleta was going to become a restaurant.
Subsequently, I met the three principals involved in the effort to open a
new restaurant on that site, and after that, I read the following in the
ERNC Newsletter:
WHAT’S GOING ON NEXT TO CINDY’S COFFEE SHOP?
USED CAR LOT CLOSED - 1923 BUNGALOW BEING REFURBUSHED FOR COTTAGE
RESTAURANT -
Lots and lots of you have called or written wondering what is going on
with the bungalow & used car lot at 1496 Colorado Blvd. next to
Cindy’s Coffee Shop. Here’s the news: The used car lot is gone, and
partners Larkin Mackey & Joshua McBride are planning to open a
restaurant in the space called Larkin’s. The plan is to refurbish and
maintain the character of the original 1923 bungalow and create a cottage
style restaurant with indoor and porch seating. Think of it in the vein of
restaurants such as Off Vine and the Raymond, but with a contemporary soul
food twist. The pair will serve eclectic, more-healthy-than-usual-
but-still-down-home dishes and desserts and they’d like to be up and
running by August. Keep an eye on HGTV this fall for an episode of
"Opening Soon" which will be documenting the process and pratfalls of
opening the new business. Larkin & Joshua tell us they are excited to
be a part of the Eagle Rock community. They have lived in Highland Park
for five years and have always wanted to make a business for themselves in
Northeast LA, especially impressed with the dedication of community
leaders and the community at-large for helping Eagle Rock thrive. The pair
attended the ERNC Meet & Greet with their sous- chef Rick and were
encouraged by the close-knit community and positive attitudes they
encountered. The project’s zoning / planning application will come before
the ERNC Land Use & Planning Committee at its June 22 meeting. Stay
tuned for further details and to offer public comment as the application
for a condition use permit and any required variances is considered.

It seems the center on Eagle Rock Boulevard at Laverna has been
abandoned? The weeds are nearly as tall as I am! Did they fail to get all
the permits required to open or what? It's such an eyesore now.
Also, what happened to the Chinese Restaurant, House of Joy, that
opened awhile back on Eagle Rock Boulevard, just south of York? Initially
the sign said 'closed for renovations.' Now the actual sign is covered.
