  • I am most sorry to have to announce that due to work conflicts on the part of key TERA Board members, the grand opening of the Eagle Rockdale Community Garden and Art Park and the Membership Appreciation meeting, scheduled for Saturday, May 20th has to be postponed. Current plans are to reschedule an event at the garden at some future date and to reschedule TERA’s quarterly community meeting as soon as possible. In the meantime, the Eagle Rockdale Community Garden is up and running. If you are interested in one of the few remaining garden plots please write in to the e-letter or call and leave a message on the TERA phone line at 323-259- TERA (323-259-8372). And, since the 20th is now free on your calendar, note below that the Center for the Arts Eagle Rock is looking for volunteers to help with their landscaping efforts on the 20th. You see, it’s springtime in Eagle Rock and everyone’s thoughts turn to dirt, as well as plants.

And as long as I'm extending apologies, I'm sorry for the errors in last week's e-letter regarding Eagle Rock High School's production of Macbeth. The play runs on June 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Please see the corrected and allegedly perfect version below. There also seems to be some dispute about the position ERHS occupies on Newsweek's list of the top high schools in the country. But as this week's writer points out, the good thing is ERHS is on that list.

For those of you lucky enough to still be able to do so, make sure you wish Mom a very Happy Mother’s Day! Give her a real treat and take her to one of Eagle Rock’s fine eating establishments for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Buy her flowers from an Eagle Rock florist and gifts from one of our local shops.

Speaking of restaurants, I am told by reliable sources that a “Mexican theme” restaurant will soon be open in the space previously occupied by Dante’s BBQ. Perhaps that’s where I’ll be next Cinco de Mayo?

All the way at the end of the letters section Joel Miller writes that Eagle Rock Boy Scout Troop 188 will be having their annual pancake breakfast fundraiser on May 13th on the Eagle Rock City Hall lawn from 7a.m. - 11a.m. Come and enjoy an Eagle Rock tradition! I just wanted to be sure that those of you who sometimes don't get that far are aware of the event!

Oxy Grant for Kids' Jazz Intro

OCCIDENTAL ENSEMBLE WINS GRANT TO INTRODUCE AREA SCHOOLCHILDREN TO JAZZ

Occidental College’s OxyJazz student ensemble has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) to educate local schoolchildren about jazz via demonstrations and talks by undergraduate musicians and the ensemble’s director, Timothy Emmons.

The award was presented on April 25 during PSHA’s 2006 gifts and grants reception, held at the Pasadena Showcase House of Design. This year, the organization awarded 36 gifts totaling more than $700,000 to nonprofit organizations and community schools for music programs.

The OxyJazz Educational Community Outreach Program will target nearly 2,000 pupils at Mt. Washington, Garvanza and Eagle Rock elementary schools, starting with two performances in May at Mt. Washington Elementary School and continuing next fall at all three schools. The OxyJazz ensemble will present demonstrations and talks on various jazz styles, and will offer one-on-one or small-group mentoring sessions on how to play jazz.

Ensemble members will showcase topics such as music improvisation techniques, different styles of jazz, world influences, and innovators, including Duke Ellington and Miles Davis. “Though jazz is uniquely American, jazz greats like Louis Armstrong are not part of today’s culture,” Emmons said. “For most of these students, their first connection to this cultural heritage will be participation in these jazz demonstrations and talks, and jazz lessons taught in mentoring sessions.”

PSHA has organized and presented the annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design since 1964. Today it is one of the largest home and garden tours in the United States, visited by about 40,000 people each year. Proceeds from the tours benefit PSHA youth music programs and its gifts and grants program.

Established in 1887, Occidental College is consistently ranked in the top tier of national liberal arts colleges and is second in the nation in student diversity, according to US News & World Report. This year, more than 5,000 applicants vied for 445 freshman slots. Occidental students can choose from 30 interdisciplinary majors and can take part in joint programs with Caltech, Columbia University, and Keck Graduate Institute. More than half of all Occidental students participate in community-based projects such as the OxyJazz Educational Outreach Program during their academic careers.

Ken Bernstein Named to City Historic Resources Post

Ken Bernstein, lately of the Los Angeles Conservancy and prior to that with once upon a time Los Angeles City Councilmember (now City Controller) Laura Chick is taking on a new role. Given TERA’s interest in historic preservation, it is worth noting. Ken writes:

    Dear Friends --

For nearly eight years, it has been my great honor to serve as Director of Preservation Issues for the Los Angeles Conservancy, representing the Conservancy's committed membership, dedicated volunteers, talented and supportive Boards of Directors, and remarkable staff. It's therefore with a mix of sadness and anticipation that I've decided to leave the Conservancy at the end of this month to become the Director of the City of Los Angeles' Office of Historic Resources, a new position in the City's Planning Department.

Though I will greatly miss being part of the Conservancy family, I am tremendously excited to be returning to City government to lead this new office. I see this as an opportunity to help create the truly comprehensive and effective City preservation program that Los Angeles has long deserved. I will be overseeing the historic preservation functions of the department, including the important multi-year effort, supported by the Getty Conservation Institute and the Getty Foundation, to conduct a citywide historic resources survey for Los Angeles. I can't think of a more exciting moment to be joining the Planning Department -- with a new Planning Director, new Mayor, and a new citywide focus and energy on urban planning and historic preservation. I'm looking forward to becoming part of new director Gail Goldberg's management team and to helping to make historic preservation a vital, valued component of the City's broader planning policies.

I will be wrapping up my work at the Conservancy through the end of May, and then assuming my new position in the Planning Department on June 12. I'll pass along my new contact information as soon as I have it, and I look forward to continuing to work with you in my new capacity.

    Ken Bernstein

Eagle Rock Community Preservation & Revitalization (E.R.C.P.R.) Graffiti Abatement Grant Program was initiated to ensure the continued good looks of commercial properties.

The program provides 50% matching rebate grants, up to $500.00 per storefront, for installation of protective window film for businesses located in Eagle Rock. Property owners, business owners and tenants may submit applications to the E.R.C.P.R. and upon approval, hire a contractor to complete the work. Remaining funds will be allocated on a first- come, first-served basis. You might also check the ERCPR web site at http://www.ercpr.org , but at the time of this writing, the form was not yet available on line.

    6. The E.R.C.P.R. will process a check for 50% of the cost of the work completed.

    Macbeth at Eagle Rock High - June 1, 2 & 3
    McBeth Pic

Samurai Shakespeare -- Macbeth at Eagle Rock High -- June 1, 2 and 3

Macbeth is a tale of passion, power and revenge. The tyrant Macbeth (Carlo Estella) is driven by his greedy wife, Lady Macbeth (Melissa Chan), to seize the throne. The forces of justice and retribution are set in motion by Macduff (Raisa Donato), Malcolm (Anthony Madrid) and the other knights of the realm.

As a tribute to the Filipino/Asian community of the Eagle Rock family, Director Russell Copley sets the play in a pan-Asian world that reflects the struggle between traditional martial arts doctrine and Macbeth's infatuation with 1980's technology and fashion.

    Letters

I have had mail taken from my mail box, thanks to a thoughtful neighbor who saw my opened mail in the bushes I was able to contact my credit cards before my card number was put to use. I no longer have a box on the street.

This is getting to be more and more of a problem everywhere in Los Angeles. Thankfully in Eagle Rock some (most?) of us are fortunate enough to have neighbors who help keep an eye on things and report suspicious activities. Thanks for the warning and thanks to your concerned neighbor for letting you know what happened before more damaging mischief could be done.

I went on the Newsweek website and Eagle Rock High was listed at number 409 not 394. Still lots to cheer about.

Also, Eagle Rock Boy Scout Troop 188 will be having their annual pancake breakfast fundraiser on May 13th on the Eagle Rock City Hall lawn from 7a.m. - 11a.m. Come and enjoy an Eagle Rock tradition!

    Thank You,

    Joel Miller

    P.S. Love getting the e-letter!

Where is the community garden? No address was given in the information.

    _____________________________________

There is no official address for the Community Garden site, although the Department of Water and Power has assigned it an address for billing purposes. That address is 1045 Rockdale Avenue, Eagle Rock 90041. But if you really want to get there, from the intersection of La Loma and Figueroa, at the easterly side of Eagle Rock, go east on La Loma. Turn right (south) on Lanark Street. Turn left (east) on Shelby Place. Turn immediately right (south) on Rockdale Avenue and the garden will be on your right (west) side as you drive south towards Figueroa Boulevard. If you see people in the garden, stop and chat and take in what a pleasant, peaceful place it is.

I know this letter will meet with disagreement by some, but for me, the Colorado Terrace complex is really starting to look nice and is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. I think the design is very appealing (particularly as it is part of the view from two sides of my house), the scale is not overbearing, and I welcome the new shops on the bottom level. It's nice to see activity moving towards the Western border of E.R. I also like the new street lights in front of the complex and would love to see the city extend them down the blvd as they have done on other streets (except for areas which still have the beautiful old lights.). Another welcome addition has been the finally opened Spitz Doner-Kabob place. E.R. just keeps getting better and better to me. Maybe the appealing look of the Colorado Terrace will prompt Westfield to improve the look of their mall which has no real front entrance, little curb appeal and seems designed to discourage pedestrian traffic wherever possible.

From: M. Wynton, Children's Librarian Eagle Rock Branch of Los Angeles Public Library.

Thanks for reminding people of the litter problem in Eagle Rock. We have a constant problem in front of the Library. If the staff don't pick it up (meaning, myself) it will be there for days, as there is NOT a library agency hired to clean on a regular basis. IF the WHOLE COMMUNITY could remember EVERY LITTER BIT HURTS perhaps the kids would be aware, as well. Thanks for listening.

And thanks for your work in ridding Eagle Rock of litter as well as for your work as a children's librarian. And thanks to Eagle Rock Branch Library for providing TERA's Planning, Preservation and Development Committee with a place to meet the third Wednesday of each month from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the library meeting room.
