10.  QUOTE OF THE WEEK

1.  TERA'S MEMBER APPRECIATION SOIREE A HUGE SUCCESS!

TERA's Member Appreciation event on Tuesday was so much fun!  In attendance were about 50 members (and non-members who enthusiastically joined), all of whom enjoyed a great dinner from Senor Fish, a home-made cake to die for, good comraderie, a chance to meet TERA's Board members and sign up as new volunteers, and the ambient but spirited jazz piano of ERHS junior Ian Turner.

TERA's vice president, Kathleen Long, presided in the absence of president Hilary Norton Orozco, who was attending a hearing in Santa Clarita (and having much less fun than the rest of us!).  We gave away several terrific door prizes from the following local businesses:

Two $10 Gift Cards from Swork
Two $20 Gift Cards from Trader Joe's
One $20 Gift Card from The Coffee Table
One Gift from The Blissful Soul
Two Giveaways of Two (2) Tickets to the Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour 2005

Many thanks to all these businesses who support TERA and its mission to bring a better quality of life for all in Eagle Rock!  And, many, many thanks to our members, without whom we could not do the good work we do!

2.  120 YEARS OF CALIFORNIA PLEIN AIR -- THROUGH APRIL 30

The "120 Years of California Plein Air" show continues at Carlotta's Passion Fine Art, located at 2012 Colorado Blvd. in Eagle Rock until Saturday, April 30 at 7:00 pm.

"Plein air" work, by definition, is done on site.  The works usually depict landscapes or seascapes. There is a very long history of plein air in Southern California.  Many early plein air painters lived along locally, along the arroyo.  In the early part of the 20th Century, a plein air artist collective existed in the Garvanza district of Highland Park.  Charles Lummis was intimately involved in promoting the work of many of these artists.

The show includes works from 1886 to present.  It is worth seeing simply for 14 works by John A. Dominique, who was a Santa Barbara and Ojai-based plein air artist for eighty years!  Dominique is exceptionally well listed.  (Just do a Google search for pages information about Dominique and his work.)  His work is stunning and highly collectible.

The participating contemporary artists include graduates of the finest art colleges in the United States.  Most of these artists, including Judith Amdur, Alex Schaefer, Carol Putnam, Trish Kertes, Fei Lu, Kevin D. Brown, James Osorio, J. Dudley Slay, Erin Rosen, Joseph Stevens, and Felice Hrovat live within a 20 mile radius of Northeast Los Angeles.  Most of the artists have an award winning history.

Asking prices for the remaining available plein air pieces range from $300 - $5,500. Many prices are negotiable.

6.  WILL YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER BE THE NEXT ACADEMIC DECATHLON CHAMPION?

EAGLE ROCK HIGH SCHOOL ANNOUNCES OPENINGS ON THE ACADEMIC DECATHLON  2005-2006 COMPETITION TEAM

The Academic Decathlon, the premiere national scholastic competition for high school students, was created to provide opportunities for students to experience the challenges of rigorous team and individual academic competition.  Each student competes in ten events, which are Economics, Essay, Art, Interview, Language and Literature, Math, Music, Science, Social Science and Speech.  Each year the Science or Social Science topic is used as the Super Quiz topic.  The competition format of the Super Quiz differs from that of the other subject areas.  While students take one written test in each of the other six subjects, they will take two tests in the Super Quiz subject: one written and the other oral.  The oral relay portion of the Super Quiz which is televised live from UCLA's Pauley Pavilion is the only part of the actual testing that is open to the public, and it is one of the most memorable and exciting parts of the Academic Decathlon competition.

The 10-event academic program strives to foster a greater respect for knowledge, to promote wholesome inter-school academic competition, and to further develop student communication skills.  A unique aspect of the Academic Decathlon is that it is designed to include students from all academic abilities and achievement levels.  Each nine-member team consists of three A-level students (Honor division), three B-level students (Scholastic division), and three C-level or below (Varsity division) students.  Each team member competes in all 10 events against other students in their individual divisions. These three levels ensure that students from various academic backgrounds can compete fairly.

Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded for individual events and total scores.  Overall individual winners are recognized, as are champion teams.  The broad base of awards allows for major recognition of academic accomplishment.  Our team can advance through local and state levels of competition.  The state champions compete at the national finals.

The curricular theme for the 2005-2006 academic year will be The European Renaissance.  The Super Quiz topic will focus on the European Renaissance from a social science perspective.  Students will compose an essay based on a prompt whose central theme incorporates information relating to the current curriculum.  Students will also perform a prepared speech and impromptu speech and participate in an interview before panels of community volunteer judges.

Team members will work together in class as well as after school and during breaks to prepare for the rigorous competition.  The study season begins in late May with competition beginning in November.  An honors humanities course with an Academic Decathlon focus will be offered in the fall semester.

Students who are interested in competing may try out for the team by seeing Mr. Laird in room S-6.  Mr. Laird's e.mail is glennlaird@earthlink.net and phone number is (323) 254-6891 x137.

7.  UPCOMING EVENTS AT THE BLISSFUL SOUL

Saturday, April 30, 6-8 p.m.  Kismet Concert and Reception with Aurah.  Judith Martin and Marc Dold of Aurah will present their ethereal and mystical music, cards, incense, and books.

Saturday, May 7, 6-8 p.m., book signing with Eagle Rockıs own David Elliott, author of The Reluctant Healer.  This book is an inspiration for all of us seeking to embrace our own healing potential.  David will be signing books and, for those who are interested, he will conduct an exercise which he uses in his healing practice.

8.  EMPTY LOT NEEDS A HOME

We have a nice lot in Eagle Rock and are looking for an old house to move onto it.  We had talked about building, but seeing so many historical, or just old and interesting, homes demolished in LA, we thought we would rather give one a home.  If anyone knows of a house slated for demolition that could be moved, please e.mail me at abritt@chla.usc.edu.

Thanks -- Anita Britt, Eagle Rock resident
