An exhibition of new work by
Lui Michael Sanchez
April 23rd through May 29th, 2003
The Eagle Rock Community Cultural Center (ERCCC) is proud to present Portraits
and Other Plants, an exhibition of new work by Lui Michael Sanchez. These
portraits, both human and plant, are literal in their design but made fantastic
and metaphoric through Mr. Sanchez¹ use of color. The artist uses the
images that surround him, his friends and his habitat, and combines these
images with the textures of dreams. These paintings are those of a
maturing artist. This exhibit illustrates the stillness of deep passion.
On April 27th from 1-4 PM, the ERCCC will host a reception featuring Disc
Jockey, David Cabrera¹s eclectic music. The public is invited.
Refreshments will be served.
The Eagle Rock Community Cultural Centeris located just west of the corner of

Colorado Blvd, Los Angeles, CA
6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
$11.00 per person
Join us in ushering in a new HCSC feature -- presenting award certificates
to people in the host community who have made exemplary contributions to
neighborhood and regional preservation! All this will take place in a most
appropriate setting: an old, picturesque community, absorbed into the Los
Angeles Megalopolis that is now working hard to restore its neighborhood
character. We'll meet in one of the community's treasures, the National
Register listed Old Eagle Rock Library, originally built in 1915. On the
old trolley line from Glendale and a block away from one that went to downtown Los
Angeles, this venerable structure symbolizes the persistence of Eagle Rock's
community spirit from its early days as a separate city to today's quest for
restoration, revitalization and renewal.
New Heritage Coalition members welcome! It's a great way to learn more about
heritage landmarks in other communities and promote your own heritage and
events among like-minded Southern Californians.

9. DOG PARK MEETING -- PLEASE ATTEND -- APRIL 29
Please let everyone interested know, a crucial meeting regarding the
establishment of an Off-Leash Dog Exercise area will held on Tuesday, April 29,
2003 at 7pm at the Eagle Rock Recreation Center in the existing daycare
facilities. This meeting is hopefully the last before the project is
approved and we are trying to show as much community interest as possible.
As far as I know, the Recreation and Parks committee, the council
representatives and various other officials will be at this meeting and it would
be wonderful to be able to add this facility for the benefit of Eagle Rock and
the neighboring communities.
Thank you for your help in distributing this invitation -- Ursula Brown

News
ArroyoFest Fundraising Push Closing the Gap - Over the last two weeks, ArroyoFest
has been working hard to raise the final funds needed to cover event expenses.
Our fundraising target is now down to $44,000. Much of this has
been due to small donations for individuals and organizations. All the
money that we raise goes to cover expenses of this historic event. Read
the exciting news below and help us get the show on the road. You can
help by putting us in touch with potential sponsors, helping with our small
business drive, getting people to register for the bike ride or making a
donation. Every little bit helps. Tax-deductible donations should
be made payable to ArroyoFest - Occidental College and mailed to 2106 Colorado
Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90041.
Registration Available On-Line! - Be the first on your block to register for
the Freeway Walk and Bike Ride. Thanks to Do It Sports, you can now

South Pasadena Approves ArroyoFest - On April 2, South Pasadena became the
first city to officially approve ArroyoFest and lend its support.
Councilmember Michael Ten voiced strong support for the event saying he
was impressed with the diversity of representation on the ArroyoFest Steering
and Committee. The Council approved police support for the closing of
freeway ramps at Fair Oaks and Orange Grove on June 15, along with art supplies
for 15 classrooms to create banners and decorations for the event, school bus
service from local schools and help with some of the equipment necessary for
the event. South Pasadena's support will be integral to the success
of ArroyoFest's first year and speaks directly to ArroyoFest's mission of
forming partnerships between residents, agencies and local governments.
MTA Becomes an ArroyoFest Partner - The Metropolitan Transportation Authority
has signed on as an ArroyoFest partner and will be doing a major promotional
effort across Southern California to support the event. ArroyoFest's
support of multi-modal transportation goes hand in hand with a number of MTA
projects and its overall support for livable communities. The Gold Line
is scheduled to open soon after ArroyoFest and we're discussing the possibility
of having a special event on June 15 to feature the new service. MTA will
be printing posters, fliers, participant hand-outs and brochures for ArroyoFest
in the coming weeks. Take the Metro to ArroyoFest!
Host Your Own ArroyoFest Event - Does your organization or community group want
to get in on the ArroyoFest festivities? Opportunities exist for
groups and organizations to host their own ArroyoFest event and take advantage
of the thousands of people expected to attend the Freeway Walk and Bike Ride.
Our simple event application is available on-line at <http://www.arroyofest.org/hostevent.html>.
Other ArroyoFest events will be listed on our web site, in e-mail
bulletins and, if your event is on June 15, in information given to
participants.

exhibit space and/or booths at Sycamore Grove Park for the Arroyo Community
Festival are available on-line at <http://www.arroyofest.org/booth.html>.

12. CALIFORNIA STATE ARCHITECT -- WHAT IS HISTORIC PRESERVATION?
From the Office of the California State Architect:
What is Historic Preservation?
Historic Preservation is not "frosting," "fluff" or
"fad." It is tested and sound social, economic and environmental
policy.
Communities fight for the tourist dollar, and tourism centered around our
historic legacy is the fastest growing segment of that industry.
Historic preservation affirms environmental sensitivity: Just think of the many
railroad tank-cars full of fuel required to bake -- for a full week -- the
countless bricks that make up a vintage building. How much more respectful of
our earth and its resources to conserve that huge investment in non-renewable
fuel, rather than to consign it, along with all that labor and all those
materials, to a non-biodegradable heap of landfill.
Historic preservation has demonstrated its ability to turn "inner
cities" around, replacing decay, indifference and crime with a sense of
"roots," a sense of place, and a feeling of community pride. In
the process, the cost of crime diminishes while the community's tax revenues
increase.
A civilization (or a community) is judged by the monuments it leaves behind.
Historic preservation educates and enriches the mind and spirit of a people. We
must never forget that it is we who are the stewards of this priceless legacy.
And may we accept with deep resolve the obligation to bequeath it -- as
unaltered as possible -- to future generations.

14. LOCAL MUSEUMS TO CELEBRATE 100 YEARS OF SO. CAL. TRANSPORTATION
-- MAY 18
One-Day Event Will Feature Exhibits, Special Events, Crafts and Family Fun;
Free Shuttle, Free Admission to Five Area Museums
The Museums of the Arroyo (MOTA) invite the public to "hop on board"
to celebrate 100 years of transportation in Southern California as part of the
14th annual MOTA Day festivities.
Each year, thousands of Angelinos have experienced "life in the past
lane" when MOTA museums located along the Arroyo Seco in Los Angeles and
Pasadena open their doors 11 a.m.-5 p.m. to the public free of charge. This
year, Southern Californians will get a first-ever chance to see, touch and
learn about Los Angeles transportation with interactive exhibits of
everything from walking to biking, from vintage motoring to the latest in mass
transportation. Families can check out the changes from a century of
getting around in the Los Angeles area -- from Model A's to a sneak peek inside
the upcoming Gold Line.
The public can visit one or all of the museums during the day with free and
continuous shuttle service running between museums. Visitors can park their
cars once and then shuttle to the museums of their choice. For more information
call the MOTA hotline number, (213) 740-TOUR (8687) or visit http://www.museumsofthearroyo.com
In addition to free tours at each MOTA museum below, special family events at
this year's MOTA Day include:
· The
Gamble House. Performer and author Ian Whitcomb and his Bungalow Boys will
entertain with turn-of-the-century songs. Also vintage cars, plein art painters
and crafts for children.
· Heritage
Square Museum. Guests can observe a Spanish American War encampment, watch
traditional woodcarving and plastering demonstrations, view a photographic
display of the Arroyo Seco and listen to historical storytellers. Children can
play with Victorian toys and make crafts. Costumed folk will ride antique
bikes.
· The
Lummis Home and Garden. Veteran hikers and authors will share stories,
photos, maps and memorabilia about regional hiking throughout the years.
Vintage car display. Historian Daniel Lewis will present "Charles F.
Lummis in Chautauqua" a historical characterization of this writer,
adventurer and pioneer who was the ultimate walker he hiked from Ohio to
California from 1884-1885.
· The
Pasadena Museum of History. Tours of the Fenyes Mansion and crafts for
children are planned.
· The
Southwest Museum. Visitors can stroll through a traditional Mexican
Mercado (marketplace) where crafts people and folk artists will display
their wares including regional foods. The MTA is planning to place a
stationary Gold Line train at the nearby station so guests can tour the inside
of the newest Metrolink train, set to begin operation in Pasadena, Highland
Park and Los Angeles later this summer.

16. LETTERS AND E.MAILS
"TERA member Janice Silvernail's letter about Walgreen's in Chicago jogged
my memory: When I was in Baltimore on business recently I noted with interest
the Walgreen's store in the downtown district near the waterfront. It's
in an older, refurbished, multistory building. The overall look of the
neighboring buildings was maintained, so the Walgreen's fit right in.
Obviously, it was an effective re-use of an existing structure.
Why couldn't there be a similar outcome for a Walgreen's in Eagle Rock? I
think the City's ethics commission or the D.A. should be looking into this bald
miscarriage of public policy. Meanwhile, I won't shop in ANY Walgreen's
now -- especially not one that's being forced awkwardly into our
community."
-- Randall Hall, Eagle Rock resident and TERA member
