QUOTE OF THE WEEK
1. E.LETTER HAS A NEW (UH, REALLY OLD) EDITOR -- JOANNE
TURNER
Well, it's good to be back. My editorship of the
TERA e.letter likely will be temporary, but we'll see. I might find I
still really enjoy not only helping TERA serve as an important news link to the
Eagle Rock and Northeast Los Angeles communities, but also opening the door to
discussion of some thought-provoking issues that affect how we live in our
respective Northeast LA communities.
- Feedback from Readers. One of the most
gratifying parts of putting together this e.letter each week is getting
feedback from our readers, and I again look forward to it. It's really
wonderful to know that TERA is providing a service that is truly valued.
Our general policy is to publish all letters we receive unless otherwise
requested, so start 'em coming to
e.letter@TERA90041.org.
- Number of e.letter Items. We need to
limit the number of e.letter items. I will attempt to post all notices
of events that are sent to me, but because we must keep it to a certain limit
I'll not be able to post them all. Which notices I post will depend on a
variety of circumstances, including timing and how much work is involved.
I always try to be as fair as I can.
Well, here goes! Again, it's good to be back.
2. TERA MEMBER APPRECIATION MEETING -- APRIL
26

more about our sponsored events, such as our wildly popular annual Eclectic
Eagle Rock Home Tour and the Eagle Rockdale Community Garden and Art Park!

etc. Discover the many opportunities to volunteer!
Look forward to
savoring delicious food from local restaurants. Yum!! Enjoy it with

5. VOLUNTEERS ARE PRECIOUS -- BECOME ONE
TODAY!
Resolve to serve your local community in 2005! Make
a difference!
TERA has many interesting volunteer opportunities
available. This is a great chance to learn more about Eagle Rock, learn a
new skill, and meet other great volunteers in our town. We can place you
in a volunteer position that fits the amount of time you can offer and the kind
of service you find interesting and enjoyable.
Please contact Pauline
Mauro, Volunteer Coordinator, at (323) 259-TERA or e.mail
volunteer@TERA90041.org to make a positive impact in Eagle Rock.
We have the following opportunities available:
- Membership Appreciation Meeting, April 26, Center
for the Arts: We are looking for several volunteers to help set up,
breakdown, pick up food for the meeting, and a volunteer photographer and
reporter for this event.
- Preservation, Planning and Development (PPD,
formerly Land Use) Committee Volunteer: Research and review permits/land
use cases and obtain file copies at downtown LA City Hall. Volunteers will
be reimbursed by TERA for cost of parking and copies. 2-3 hours per research
request on as needed basis.
- PPD Committee Volunteer: Review hearing
notices and agendas for Eagle Rock Land Use cases. This can be done on-line.
Volunteer must have computer and online access. About 15 - 20 min per
week.
- PPD Committee Volunteer: Attend Planning and
Land Use hearings downtown and at Ramona Hall, and when appropriate, present
TERA position on land use issues. This may require up to 3 hours time
commitment per hearing, plus preparation time on as needed basis, probably
12 hours per year total.
- E.letter Reporter: Submit weekly brief
reports on events and news in the Northeast Los Angeles Community. Takes
about a half to one hour a week for each article.
- Newsletter Distributor: Distribute TERA
quarterly newsletters to local businesses for about 1/2 day on a quarterly
basis.
Thanks so much
for considering partaking in our positive efforts to improve Eagle Rock!
Please become one of us!
6. COLLABORATIVE EAGLE ROCK BEAUTIFUL VENTURES OUT ON ITS
OWN
Congratulations to The Collaborative Eagle Rock Beautiful,
which became fully independent from TERA on December 1, 2004. TERA salutes
the on-going efforts of former TERA Board members John Stillion and Esther Monk
for their leadership of the Collaborative and for their recent successful
fundraiser for the ³Trees for Eagle Rock² campaign. TERA looks forward to
continuing to work with the Collaborative in efforts to beautify our town.
7. TERA'S ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP DRIVE IS OFF AND
RUNNING!
It's that time of year again- please
send in your membership renewals for the 2005/2006 year. If you haven't
received a membership renewal package, please e.mail
volunteer@TERA90041.org, call (323) 259-TERA to ask for a package, or

Many thanks to those of you who have already renewed so that you can "invest in
your community!"
8. TERA'S ECLECTIC EAGLE ROCK HOME TOUR -- NOVEMBER 6 -- MARK
YOUR CALENDARS!
Be sure to attend this year's Eclectic Eagle
Rock Home Tour on Sunday, November 6, 2005! We will be featuring the
Mt. Royal Drive area north of Colorado. Last year our tour took place on
College View Avenue south of Colorado -- we intend to switch from north to south
the following year and back the year after, and so on, in order to showcase ALL
of Eagle Rock's fascinating neighborhoods.
The homes we have chosen are
really beautiful, interesting, and all different from one another in style and
interior design. We always go for as much "eclectic" as we can every year,
and this year won't disappoint.
To serve as a docent and get a free
ticket to the tour as well as an invitation to our famous and always fun
after-party, please contact Kathleen Goldstein at goldleroux@aol.com. To
volunteer in any other capacity, please contact Teri Aranguren at
tacpa@pacbell.net.
We'll see you on the tour!
9. LOS ANGELES MASTER CHORALE -- APRIL 24
hope -- Feel the inspiration of two
composers at their peak.
The poetry book, I
Never Saw Another Butterfly, written by the children in the Terezin
concentration camp, became the catalyst for Grammy-nominated Billy Childs'
large-scale new cantata. Through his profoundly moving composition, Childs
allows their voices to be heard with a clarity and tenderness that will touch
your soul.
Mozart made his move for the big-time with his
Coronation Mass. Written with white-hot inspiration and bursting
with creative energy, the majestic work sent the young, ambitious Salzburg court
organist to Vienna and fame.

10. LETTERS AND
E.MAILS
"Hi, Joanne --
Even though we live in Pasadena,
Eagle Rock is our favorite site to take friends. (Šand how we love Café
Beaujolais.) Who owns the Café now? Am I correct in thinking a
Richard Wang? And, why did the Boulangerie split off?
Spreading too much too thinly? Who owns the Beaujolais
Boulangerie [Le Petit Beaujolais] now?
Last question: Have you
discovered who owns the property to the north of Vons and what is happening
there?
Please check to be sure my new e.mail address is on TERA¹s
mailing list. I haven¹t been receiving the newsletter and I miss it.
Thanks and best with all your endeavors to keep Eagle Rock flying from
Los Angeles."
-- Marilyn Lindquist, Pasadena resident
"P.S.
I grew up in Glendale and Eric in Los Angeles. Eagle Rock has always been
special to us."
[Editor's note: To answer Marilyn's questions, I'm
not sure who currently owns either Cafe Beaujolais or Le Petit Beaujolais.
If anyone is privy to this information, please feel free to let us know.
I do know Vons owns the entire site on which the store sits, and TERA's
Preservation, Planning and Development Committee is diligently trying to work
with their corporate office regarding future development at the location.]
11. QUOTE OF THE WEEK
This one's a favorite of mine,
and I used it in one of our very first e.letters:
"If you want to get something done, put the
artists in charge." (In other words, never underestimate the
creative mind.)

former TERA vice president, and dear friend
