what TERA does and is all about.
We will be discussing the survey results with our members and also will be
recognizing the accomplishments of our many volunteers. Following the
meeting, you will have an opportunity to relax and socialize with TERA Board
members and other TERA members dedicated to helping improve Eagle Rock, with
snacks, wines, and entertainment. Please join us!

different kinds of trees they have, what areas can use what kind of trees, how
to maintain them, etc. Two weeks after the seminar, up to seven trees
will be delivered to you, along with stakes, tree ties, fertilizer tablets and
planting/protecting instructions. The trees will be 4 to 5 feet tall.
For further info, call 800-473-3652 or visit http://www.GreenLA.com for a list

5. MAYOR HAHN UNVEILS "ONE BOOK, ONE CITY L.A."
Los Angeles Residents to Read Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 in April
As part of a program to showcase the best of Los Angeles, Mayor Jim Hahn
announced today that Ray Bradbury's classic Fahrenheit 451 will be the first
book in the "One Book, One City L.A." reading initiative, which will
be held throughout the month of April.
"Our city is home to some of the best literary authors and most diverse
communities in the United States," said Mayor Hahn. " 'One
Book, One City L.A.' will highlight some of Los Angeles's greatest cultural
treasures - author Ray Bradbury and our great neighborhoods. My goal is
for people to become more acquainted with their neighbors by participating in
book discussions at our libraries, in coffee houses, on buses and on street
corners."
Bradbury, who started writing Fahrenheit 451 while living in Venice on
pay-by-the-hour typewriters at UCLA, joined Mayor Hahn at the Los Angeles
Central Library news conference. As part of the month-long festivities,
Bradbury will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 1.
"I am honored that Mayor Hahn selected Fahrenheit 451 as the book in the
City's first 'One Book, One City L.A.' reading program," said Ray
Bradbury. "I wrote most of my works in this wonderful city and am
delighted that the Mayor chose my book to help promote the city and encouraging
Los Angeles residents to discuss its central themes."
Bradbury's classic novel is one of Mayor Hahn's favorite books.
"Fahrenheit 451 celebrates the freedom of speech, the value of
imagination, and the power of the individual," said Mayor Hahn.
"We value Bradbury as a Los Angles icon."
To promote the program citywide, book discussions will be held in April at the
Los Angeles Public Library Central Library and select branches citywide.
The library has copies of the book available in English and Spanish.
"The Los Angeles Public Library system is proud to support 'One Book, One
City L.A.,'" said City Librarian Susan Kent. "We are so pleased that
Mayor Hahn has reaffirmed the critical importance of reading and literature in
the cultural life of Los Angeles. His ongoing support for the Library and its
efforts to promote literacy is one of the hallmarks of his
administration."
The Los Angeles Unified School District is also a proud partner in this effort.
Many LAUSD students are participating by attending study groups, serving on
discussion panels, and reading the book in their individual classes. With
the help of Ballantine Books, Mayor Hahn was able to donate 500 copies of
Fahrenheit 451 to high school students in LAUSD schools.
"We're delighted to be part of this exciting program, which will promote
literacy and the joy of books throughout the city," said LAUSD
Superintendent Roy Romer. "We're encouraging every 9th or 10th
grader to read Fahrenheit 451, and we're asking our high school English
teachers to encourage their students to take part in the various activities
surrounding the 'One Book, One City L.A.' effort. We're also very
grateful to Mayor Hahn for arranging 500 books to be donated to our kids."
Additionally, throughout the month of April, there will be over 30 events,
including a "town hall"-style book discussion at the El Portal
Theater to be broadcast live on KPCC 89.3FM, book club discussions at Barnes
& Noble and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, movie screenings of the 1966 film
and public readings throughout Los Angeles. The month-long
initiative will culminate at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books with an
event featuring Bradbury.
An award-winning author, Bradbury wrote short science-fiction stories and
learned the craft while watching Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Twilight
Zone. He wrote several screenplays including the film adaptation of John
Huston's 1953 version of Moby Dick.
"One Book, One City L.A." is sponsored by SBC Pacific Bell. "We
are proud to sponsor this innovative initiative and applaud Mayor Hahn for his
foresight and leadership in developing this program," said Dave Nichols,
president of SBC Pacific Bell Los Angeles.
The campaign is presented by The City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Public
Library, Fleishman-Hillard Inc., Simon & Schuster, Ballantine Books, Coffee
Bean & Tea Leaf, Barnes & Noble, the Los Angeles Department of Public
Works, the Los Angeles Unified School District, and KPCC 89.3FM.

7. ECLECTIC
EAGLE ROCK HOME TOUR -- VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! -- MAY 19
Mark your calendars for TERA's annual Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour, to take
place Sunday, May 19, 2002! The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. and
continue throughout the day until 4:00 p.m.
This is a fantastic and very fun event. We have a WONDERFUL AND ECLECTIC
array of fines homes this year -- from a lovely Asian-inspired Craftsman to a
Richard Neutra-designed home built for plein-air artist Conrad Buff in 1927 to
a terrific mid-century modern to an Irving Gill-influenced home built only five
years ago, and more!
Volunteers are needed. There are openings for docents, ticket/brochure
handlers, table monitors, etc. All volunteers receive a complimentary
ticket to our Home Tour and an invitation to our post-tour party, which is
always great fun! Please call Wanda Kuenzli at (323) 256-7297 or by
e.mail at wmkuenzli@earthlink.net.
8. THE COMMENTS (AND PETITIONS) KEEP COMING IN FROM WALGREENS
PETITION SIGNERS
"I do not live in Eagle Rock, but my family and I visit there often to go
bowling, have coffee or a meal and shop at the stores and farmers market.
We will happily shop at the Walgreens if it has the integrity to restore
the existing building. If it commits the sacrilegious act of demolishing
the old Shopping Bag building, we will never shop at any Walgreens. Ever.
And I will spread the word."
-- Moira Quirk, North Hollywood resident
"I think it was Malcolm X who popularized 'Do the Right Thing,' but I may
be wrong....
Regardless, sign me up for efforts to defeat the Walgreens monolith. They are
anti-labor, worker-unfriendly and arrogant. They are unwelcome in our
neighborhood. I like the blurb on the old Robinsons Building on Seventh Street
[in downton LA] -- great example of the wonders of adaptive re-use!
I will be writing a letter to the Councilman today. If there are talking points
I should be bringing up, please let me know. Thank you for your
efforts."
-- Nick Santangelo
9. LETTERS AND E.MAILS
"Congrats on the great article in the paper today. I just love it when
I open it up and see articles in the paper about TERA's work. It makes my
day!"
-- Jennifer Root, Eagle Rock resident and TERA member
"I was wondering how to subscribe to the e-letter found on the TERA
website. Or do you only post it there? If you send it each week,
please add me to the list. Thanks --"
-- Victoria Deise, Occidental College employee
"I'm the Vice Pres. of the Wilshire Vista Neighborhood Association (in the
mid-Wilshire area just south of the LA County Museum). Matthew Lynch, a
fellow Wilshire Vistan, forwarded your 2/28 TERA e.letter to me. I
checked out the TERA Web site and wanted to tell you how impressed I am.
Matt said that your group is extremely well organized, but it would appear that
you also have a large group of people who committed to the association and
dedicate their time. Out of curiosity, what are TERA's boundaries and
does the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council cover basically the same area as TERA?
I would love to talk with you sometime about the evolution of TERA and hear
what you think have been key elements for success of the group. Regards
--"
-- Consuelo Gomez, Vice President, Wilshire Vista Neighborhood Association
