There are some subtle changes occurring as the days grow a little
longer every week and the trees begin to bud out, getting ready for
Spring.
Occidental College has a new President, Susan Prager. More details
about Ms. Prager’s background are given below. Welcome to Occidental
College and most welcome to Eagle Rock. TERA’s own Hilary Norton Orozco,
TERA Board Member and President Emeritus was very involved in ensuring
opportunities for community input into Occidental’s selection process and
in keeping the community abreast of the selection process. Thank you,
Hilary.
With the ending of winter and the coming of spring, work also begins on
TERA’s Eclectic Home Tour. The Home Tour Committee has begun meeting again
and once things are underway, we’ll be looking for volunteers for TERA’s
premier event. And never forget the most important reason for
participating in the Home Tour; it’s just a whole lot of fun!
TERA’s Eagle Rockdale Community Garden is undergoing its final touches
prior to being declared officially open and fully operational. TERA Board
member Mary Tokita’s dream is finally reaching full blown reality, but not
without some heartache. Unfortunately the entry gate, a work of art
created by local artist Kacy Treadway, along with the garden shed, were
hit with graffiti a couple of weeks ago. The artwork has been cleaned and
the shed will be repainted but senseless acts of vandalism hurt the entire
community. If you see graffiti, call the City’s Graffiti Hotline (Dial
311). If it’s on your property, don’t let it linger. Scrub it off and/or
paint it out! Congratulations, Mary. The hard work of you, Joan MacNeil
and all of the volunteers who worked to make this a reality deserve the
thanks of the entire community.
In addition to the Community Garden and the Home Tour, TERA will be
involved in working with other community groups for a more equitable
parking system that encourages the preservation of existing buildings
while protecting residents on either side of Eagle Rock’s boulevards from
encroachment and adverse impacts from parking for commercial uses. This is
a feasible goal but requires a lot of thought and input from all parties.
It’s going to be a busy spring and summer. We look forward to your
joining us to make it something special for Eagle Rock.

Green Week for
Kids at Kidspace, March 13 -19 |
 |
Green Week, a week-long celebration where it's easy for kids to learn
to be green, will be held at Kidspace, March 13-19.
Children can explore how they are connected to the world and its
natural systems during Green Week, a celebration of environmental
awareness taking place daily, March 13-19, at Kidspace Children's Museum
in Pasadena.
Experiential, interactive, and fun programs unique to Kidspace will
increase children 's understanding of how they can positively interact
with nature in their day-to-day lives. Activities will include the
exciting debut of the Eco-lympics relay exploring recycling, alternative
energy, and the ecology of diet, and a new Kidspace short program on
photosynthesis, entitled, " Why Plants Are Green " taking place in the
outdoor Stone Hollow Amphitheater daily through the week.
Children will have the opportunity fabricate biodegradable paper that
can also be grown in a plant bed at home, and to make a healthy Green
snack in Kidspace's own gardens.
Jeff Chapman of the Arroyo Seco Foundation will be giving families a
guided tour of the Arroyo Seco Watershed promptly at 1:30p.m. on Saturday
3/18, and the whole week promises to be a great one!
The week's highlights will include a day of ecologically-related film
screenings for kids on Wednesday, March 15, a tour through the Arroyo Seco
Watershed led by Jeff Chapman of the Arroyo Seco Foundation on Saturday,
March 18 at 1:30p.m., and a Nature of Wildworks interactive presentation
of native Southern California animals on Sunday, March 19 at 1p.m.
Getting out into nature is a great way to learn about it, and the
Arroyo Seco Foundation is excited about this opportunity to work with
Kidspace on March 18 as we explore the beautiful Arroyo, a natural,
easy-to-access environment for urban families to enjoy, " stated Jeff
Chapman, Watershed Coordinator for the Arroyo Seco Foundation. More can be

Susan Prager
Named President of Occidental College |
 |
Former UCLA Law School Dean Susan Westerberg Prager, a distinguished
legal scholar, teacher and academic leader, has been selected by the
Occidental College Board of Trustees as Occidental’s 13th president. She
succeeds Theodore R. Mitchell, who resigned last September to head the
NewSchools Venture Fund in San Francisco.
Prager, a 1964 graduate of Stanford University who received her law
degree at UCLA, served as dean of UCLA Law School for 16 years and spent
14 years on the Stanford board of trustees before taking the post of
provost (chief academic officer) at Dartmouth College. She returned to
UCLA in 2001, where she is the Arjay and Frances Fearing Miller Professor
of Law. She will take office at Occidental July 1.
“We are delighted that a comprehensive national search has led us to a
distinguished California educator to serve as Occidental’s next
president,” said Catherine Selleck ’55, chair of the Occidental Board of
Trustees. “Susan Prager has a deep understanding of higher education
gained from years of experience as a student, teacher, trustee and
administrator. Her commitment to the Occidental mission of excellence,
equity and the life-long value of a liberal arts education made her the
unanimous choice to lead the College to even greater achievements in the
future.”
