Spring time brings thoughts of testing and thinking about college for our high-schoolers...

SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT [FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS]

Deadline: 25 March 2002

From: La Alianza at Harvard Law School Applications are now being accepted for the "Justicia en Diversidad" Scholarship competition.  A $1000 award will be given to a high school senior living in the continental US who plans to enroll as a full-time college student during the 2002-2003 academic year. Alianza is the Latino student organization at Harvard Law School.  Our goal in establishing this scholarship fund is to promote diversity within the legal field and to perhaps connect scholarship recipients with a law student or legal practitioner of Latino heritage who can address questions and concerns that may arise as the student progresses through his or her educational endeavors.  Applicants must, therefore, show a strong interest in pursuing a career in law. A website for the scholarship will be posted within the week at the following URL: http://www.law.harvard.edu/studorgs/alianza/scholarship.

11th graders only:

Ivy West Educational Services is offering its SAT Prep Program again on campus for only $5.  Enrollment is limited.  Go to the college counselling office immediately and complete the application form.  Call Steve Williams, college counsellor, with any questions.

Tenth Grade Laser Tag night:  Thursday, Feb. 7, 7-9 pm.  Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from Jesus Hernandez & Joey Conte or Mr. Oswald in room 301.

* If Walgreens decides to locate in our community, I DO NOT want Walgreens to demolish the Shopping Bag building and erect a corporate cookie-cutter structure surrounded by a vast parking lot.

* If Walgreens decides to locate in our community, I DO want Walgreens to restore and occupy the Shopping Bag building at 2222 Colorado Boulevard.

9.  MORE COMMENTS FROM WALGREENS PETITION SIGNERS

"As a member of TERA, The Los Angeles Conservancy and The National Trust for Historic Preservation, I urge Walgreens to preserve the Shopping Bag Building.  The first Walgreens Pharmacy opened in 1901 and by 1930, there were over 400. Perhaps Walgreens should revisit their roots and incorporate design elements from some of their earlier stores into a Shopping Bag Building renovation."

10.  LETTERS AND E.MAILS

"The latest TERA e-letter [1/31/02] was one of those wonderfully informative pieces that provides a great deal of info about a wide spectrum of issues that makes a person feel good about living in a community where so many people care about and are actively engaged in what happens locally.  Thanks for putting it out there week after week.  Great job!"

-- Wanda Kuenzli, Eagle Rock resident, TERA member, and chair, Eagle Rock Community Cultural Association

"Thank you for the Editor's Note re stuccoing over a wood-sided house!  As a real estate agent I see this all the time and in my personal opinion it should be illegal!  It devalues the property and tends to be "catching", eventually affecting the neighborhood.  Buyers these days are looking for homes whose architectural integrity has been preserved as much as possible.  Stuccoing a wooden house destroys that integrity.  Don't do it!  (And then there are those ubiquitous aluminum windows..!)"
