1. WALGREENS PETITION -- LAST CHANCE TO SHOW
YOU CARE ABOUT EAGLE ROCK'S PAST, AND FUTURE!!
It's
easy! Join numerous concerned area
residents by adding your name to our petition.
This is your last chance to help save Eagle Rock's history!! Our petition drives ends THIS WEEK. Only your name and address are needed to
show that your opinion matters. Thanks!
* I
support positive economic development in Eagle Rock, which benefits business
and residents alike.
* I
support development that respects Eagle Rock's architectural history and
"hometown" feel.
* I
welcome Walgreens into our community, as long as Walgreens honors what we, the
people, want.
* If
Walgreens decides to locate in our community, I DO NOT want Walgreens to
demolish the Shopping Bag building and erect a corporate cookie-cutter
structure surrounded by a vast parking lot.
* If
Walgreens decides to locate in our community, I DO want Walgreens to
restore and occupy the Shopping Bag building at 2222 Colorado Boulevard.

2. EAGLE ROCK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SIXTH
GRADERS -- CATALINA FIELD TRIP!
For
parents of all sixth graders at Eagle Rock Elementary School, there is still an
opportunity to sign your child up for the CIMI (Catalina Island Marine
Institute) field trip, to take place Wednesday, February 27, through Friday,
March 1, 2002. This is a great trip (I've been on it with
my older son), and extremely educational.
A few spots are still open. The
cost is $180 per child, and there is no school fundraising for this trip. Your child must have her/his teacher's
permission to attend.
For
more information or to sign your child up, please call Eagle Rock Elementary
School teacher Joyce Jerome at (310) 798-2431 or, during school hours, at (323)

5. APPLICATIONS TO OCCIDENTAL SET NEW RECORD
-- AGAIN; HAVE MORE THAN DOUBLED IN FIVE YEARS
Maintaining
its momentum as one of America's hottest colleges, Occidental received a
record-breaking number of applications for a fourth consecutive year, topping
4,000 for the first time in the College's 115-year history.
As of
February 7, Occidental had received 4,121 applications, up 15 percent from the
record total of 3,574 at the same time last year. Compared to the same date
five years ago, the number of first-year students seeking admission to
Occidental has soared 133 percent.
"In
my 30-year admission career, I've never seen anything like this --
anywhere," said Bill Tingley, vice president of admission and financial
aid, whose resume includes stints at Stanford, Whitman and Pitzer colleges, and
UC Santa Cruz.
"I'm
often asked why. I think it's because more and more students have recognized
that Oxy is truly distinctive. It combines the advantages of a small
residential liberal arts college -- superb faculty, a demanding curriculum, a
diverse student body from 44 states and 26 countries -- with the extraordinary
resources of one of the world's great cities," Tingley said.
Based
on the buzz among college counselors at high schools across the country, the
Wall Street Journal and the Kaplan/Newsweek "How to Get Into College"
guide both named Occidental as one of the country's hottest colleges last fall.
Transfer
student applications for fall 2002 are not due until March 15. Transfer
applications have increased 41 percent over the past five years, and admission
officials said they expect that upward trend to continue.
Last
year, 47 percent of those who applied were offered admission -- what was
believed to be the lowest admit rate ever at Occidental. Approximately 445
slots are open for the Class of 2006.
In
addition to SAT scores and senior class ranking, Occidental's holistic approach
assesses other indications of academic promise, from the rigor of the student
applicant's academic program and teacher recommendations to the contributions
the applicant can make to life outside the classroom and in the community.

What's
New
Parent
Update Swork has transformed our Toddler/Kids drinks...they now have
less sugar and are available in twelve ounce cups. It's just enough to keep the little ones satisfied and not too
wound up. We've also added our newest
creation, it's called the Slippity Sam and made with oreo cookies. The kids love it, especially the boys! For the little girls try our Princess
Potion, this one is just so pretty to look at that she may not even drink it at
all. Made with raspberries and milk. All of our drinks have the option of beng
made with Soy or Non-Fat milk at your request.
Once
A Month In order to help improve
our customer service and ensure our operations continue to run smoothly, Swork
now closes an hour early one day each month to hold our monthy employee
meeting. Thanks for your support and
understanding!
The
Quad69 In March, Swork will be introducing the new Quad 69. It's really quite simple...four shots of
espresso in a large cup of coffee. This
drink is a sure "pick me up" for those mornings when you're in need
of a big energy booster. Warning: The
Quad 69 is not intended for the elderly, people with heart problems, or
pregnant women. Quad 69, coming soon.
Have
you seen our Panties? What do panties and coffee have in common? Absolutely nothing. However, we can't seem to keep them in
stock. They're cute and printed with
the Swork logo. Also added to out
collection of promotional items are our new stretch tees. Adorned with the phrase
"sworkolicious" they are sure to be a big hit too, equally as
charming and great to give as a gift.
Both items are packaged in Chinese "to-go" containers for an
added perk. Hurry and get them before
they're gone!
Lounging
Around We've recently removed the oversized computer bar and relocated
the computers to more comfortable areas.
This new rearrangement provided us with an opportunity for additional
seating areas. Our plans for
remodelling include a "lounge like"area in place of the old computer
lab. We appreciate your patience during
our time of transition.
Traveler
Mugs After many customer requests, Swork will be selling our very own
stainless steel traveling mug. Great
for the regular Swork junkies who can never get enough. Also, they make a great gift! Look for them after the 20th of February.
Menu
Updates We're planning on adding a number of items to our menu and we'd
love to have your input. A few of the
new treats are hazelnut syrup, chocolate whipcream, and the choice of an extra
large blended size for your drinks.
We'll also be adding some fun new drinks, including a few tasty ones for
the kids. If you have any requests
please fill out our "sworkreport" loacted on the front counter.
Congratulations! Here at Swork our former
lead manager, Cynthia Cargill, was recently promoted to buyer. Jenna Valentine was also promoted to
Assistant Manager from Human Resources.
We wish them both success in their new positions.

7. MORE COMMENTS FROM WALGREENS PETITION
SIGNERS
"As
a resident of Eagle Rock, I value the distinctive and historic qualities that
are present in our community because they add to the quality of life we want to
nurture and preserve here. While I do
welcome economic development, I do NOT wish to sacrifice those things we value
in order to attain it. What we will
appreciate is merchants who respect our community as it is -- and not try to
impose the 'corporate mode of the day.'
Our community is unique and we want our merchants to reflect that
peculiar nature that makes Eagle Rock the special place it is."
--
Randall Hall, Eagle Rock resident and TERA member
"Thanks
for your passion. Best --
--
Jennie Webb, Eagle Rock resident, writer, and TERA member
"I
would like to see Walgreens restore and occupy the Shopping Bag building. I think it'll be a great plus to this community."
--
Susan Lee, Eagle Rock resident
"Please
add our names to the many who support the preservation of the Shopping Bag
market building. We support the effort
to maintain the historical atmosphere of the Eagle Rock neighborhood and its
original buildings, along with restoration for retail use. We would prefer, however, to see the
(restored) Shopping Bag building used as a bookstore much like the Vroman's in
Pasadena, not another Walgreen's. Our neighborhood
already has a sufficient number of pharmacies and does not need a big chain
retailer like Walgreen's to come in, as is their practice, and put other local
retailers out of business. As this
location is within walking distance of our home, we are concerned that the
development as planned by Walgreen's will definitely NOT enhance the Colorado
Blvd.
shopping
district."
-- Pamela and George Garcia, Eagle Rock
residents and TERA members
"Hello
- please put me down for the Walgreen's petition if I am not already. We really would like something more at that
corner and restoring the Shopping Bag building would be fabulous . . . a Whole
Foods Market would be my vote!
PS:
Councilman Pacheco has flip flopped all over this and I have lost most if not
all confidence in him. He won't get my vote in the future."
--
Cardie Molina, Eagle Rock resident and TERA member
"Please
keep me in the loop."
--
Ambar Capoor, Eagle Rock resident
"All
these chain stores should be kept out of this area."
--
Lisa Cullinan, Eagle Rock resident
"Please
notify me of further movements which
benefit our community financially and preserve it historically. Thank you."

David Andrew Robinson, Eagle Rock resident
"How
about NO Walgreens?"
--
Mike Mercado, Eagle Rock resident
"I
live in Glendale which has retained very little of its small-town charm. Down town Glendale, as a result, seems very
sterile and will never be able to compete with Pasadena. We spend a lot of our money dining in Eagle
Rock and Pasadena. Please keep Eagle
Rock charming -- otherwise we'll just drive right on by and not stop
anymore."
--
Carla Fortney, Glendale resident
"Don't
do it. Residents have rights and
desires."

Lilia King, Eagle Rock resident

LETTERS
AND E.MAILS

for all your hard work via Walgreens!
Eagle Rock is better for the debate on land use! In my opinion, Starbucks has its place in
our community . . . the more coffee the better. Best --"
