SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT - TERA'S COMMUNITY MEETING, TO BE HELD ON TUESDAY,
FEBRUARY 21, 2006 AT 7:00 P.M. AT THE CENTER FOR THE ARTS, EAGLE ROCK, AT
WHICH 14TH DISTRICT COUNCILMEMBER JOSE HUIZAR WAS SCHEDULED TO SPEAK IS
CANCELLED! Councilmember Jose Huizar's staff advised TERA that, due to a
family emergency, it is uncertain whether or not the Councilmember will be
able to attend Tuesday's scheduled meeting. TERA has therefore decided to
reschedule the meeting with Councilmember Huizar. I am sure the entire
community joins with us in sending best wishes to the Councilmember's
family and we look forward to rescheduling an evening with the
Councilmember in the near future.
I'd also like to thank Keith Louie, TERA board member, and the
volunteers who worked with him in setting up this meeting, for their
efforts and for Keith's speedy reaction upon receiving word from the
Councilmember's staff in getting word out to the Community.
On another front, we will be experimenting some with the e-letter over
the next few weeks so don't be surprised if it doesn't appear at its usual
time. However, during this time of experimentation, we will do our best to
keep the letter coming out on a more or less weekly basis.

President

The Occidental College Theater Department will feature staged readings
and workshop presentations of six student-written productions during this
year's New Play Festival, scheduled for Feb. 23-26 at the college's Keck
Theater. The productions are professionally directed with student casts
supplemented by a small number of professional actors. Admission is
free.
For a campus map and directions to Occidental, please visit http:/
/www.oxy.edu/MapsDirections.xml. For more information, call (323)
259-2922.
The schedule is as follows:
Thursday, Feb. 23, 3 p.m.
"Out of the Vat and Into the Fire: A Mental Adventure in One Act"
(staged reading, Written by Brandon Baruch '07
An eerie meditation on the mysterious workings of the inner mind. Set
in the unconscious dreamscape of a woman in a coma, the reading explores
the philosophical underpinnings of free-will, our need for fantasy and the
actual nature of what we call "real."
Thursday, Feb. 23, 8 p.m. (also Saturday, Feb. 25, 5 p.m.)
"The Beauty Myth" (workshop), Written by Lisa Szolovit '06
This work turns upside-down the myths of Persephone and Aphrodite.
Using myths as metaphors for our culture's relationship to the ideals of
beauty, the author has recast the immortal goddesses in a modern context
as they struggle with expectation, self-image and the impossibility of
perfection.
Friday, Feb. 24, 7 p.m.
"Naughty!" (reading), Written by Gabrielle Benoit '06
The reading takes a look at the role of gender in modern society.
"Naughty!" focuses on two transgendered individuals as they grapple with
their pasts, their families and their newfound love for each other. Using
humor, musical acts and bizarre theatricality, the play ultimately is an
exploration of unconditional love.
9 p.m. (also Sunday, Feb. 26, 8 p.m.)
"After Life" (workshop), Written by Alexander Brody '06
"After Life" takes an ironic wild ride into the depths of heaven and
hell. Complete with angels, demons, sinners and saints, the play careens
through the life of a bad man who must come to terms with his
goodness.
Saturday, Feb. 25, 8 p.m. (also Sunday, Feb. 26, 8 p.m.)
"Side Show" (workshop), Written by Jay Blair '06
"Side Show" captures the sweet, melancholy atmosphere of an old world
traveling circus. The circus' ringmaster, long estranged from his wealthy
family, finds his small kingdom crumbling when a lost relative shows up
with startling news.
5 p.m., "The Beauty Myth" (See Feb. 23 for description)
Sunday, Feb. 26, 2 p.m.
"The Tangled Bank" (staged reading), Written by Michael Linvill '07
This production explores biology, emotions and fate as a young student
of genetics is forced to re-examine long-held beliefs about the way people
behave and feel in this witty and sad play.
5 p.m., "Side Show" (See Feb. 25 for description)
8 p.m., "After Life" (See Feb. 24 for description)
The festival is being produced by Laural Meade '88, adjunct instructor
of theater, and Nate Genung '07. The event is paid for in part by the
Remsen Bird Fund.

CELL PHONE
POLICY |
 |
Reading the concern about cell phone antenna aesthetics remind me of
one of my own pet peeves.
Eagle Rock is a valley, with lots of hills in the midst of it. Cell
Phone radio signals have to travel by line of sight, just like TV signals.
In hilly terrain, MORE cell phone antennas are necessary for good service
to be received throughout the community, not less. I live on a hillside. I
ultimately had to change my cell phone carrier because my first carrier,
Verizon, a good company, wasn't able to have antennas around Eagle Rock in
enough ways for good service. I could make and receive calls only
depending upon which room in my house I was standing, and sometimes WHERE
in which room I was standing.
So in an era where more and more people depend upon cell phone service
for their business and even primary home phone service, WHY HAS T.E.R.A.
BEEN ONE OF THE LOUDEST VOICES AGAINST BUILDING MORE CELL PHONE ANTENNAS
IN OUR COMMUNITY? Regardless of the recent court decision, most cell phone
companies are happy to build antenna towers that are masqueraded as
something else: a pine tree, a palm tree, etc. They want their customers
to have good service.
The court case the attorney wrote about in this week's newsletter
regarded an antenna that was being put on a telephone pole outside their
house. Cell companies put antennas there only as a second- or third-choice
location, because utility poles are often the only place they can place
antennas in residential neighborhoods. (Did you know that many cities,
including L.A., inexplicably ban cell antennas on land that is zoned
Residential?) Think about that in relationship to Eagle Rock: our land is
almost ALL zoned residential, except along the Colorado Blvd., Figuroa
St., and Eagle Rock Blvd. corridors. If we want great cell phone service
in Eagle Rock, the very best locations for putting cell antennae are on
the tops of hills in the middle parts of the valley--all of which are
zoned residential! So if we can't have cell antenna in the best locations,
antennae on utility poles is the only other choice a cell company has--and
they will tell you that they'd prefer to have better antenna sites.
If, like the attorney for the plaintiffs in that La Canada case, people
don't want cell antennas on the telephone poles in front of their houses,
we have to be willing to allow cell phone antennas to be built in better
locations; not to oppose them.
My friends, methinks our worry and opposition to having more cell phone
antennas in Eagle Rock amounts to being like the apocryphal man who was
"the fastest shot in the west." His name was "No Toes Bailey."
Tom Griffith, Eagle
Rock ___________________________________ And anyone who
thinks TERA is opposed to building more cell phone antennae for better
service would be mistaken. However, TERA has gone on record as being
opposed to a proliferation of ugly cell phone antennae, be they in
residential or commercial areas. TERA has also taken the position that in
order to reduce the number of cell phone antennae, cell phone companies
should co-locate their antennae where ever possible to ensure maximum
coverage while minimizing the proliferation of unsightly structures. We
all want good cell phone coverage. With today's technology, it doesn't
have to come at the expense of good design, either in commercial or
residential areas.

MORE ON THE USPS -
Based on the mail received, it appears that, just like any other work
place, there are good employees and bad employees, and sometimes employees
that are having a bad day. It is unfortunate how a few bad apples can ruin
the whole bushel.
Hi,
I've been reading about the problems with the mail delivery and can
only say that it has been happening to me for several years, also. My
particular mailman is good, but when he has subs they make big mistakes.
One year I didn't receive my IRS refund, and it took me months to rectify
that problem, at a time when I REALLY needed the money.
The other thing that has been occurring for the past couple of years is
that the advertisements for store sales come at least two weeks late, well
after the sale has ended. When I have asked my mailman about that he has
not wanted to get involved because he's exasperated, also, but he says
that they hold those kinds of items at the main office before they come to
the Eagle Rock post office.
Speaking of ER post office, I recently waited for 45 minutes in line
with a lot of other folks because they only had two people working at the
counter. It seems to me that the cause of all these problems is based on
trying to save money, so maybe the employees are getting complacent and
it's trickling down to us. My main concern is for the people that receive
paychecks through the mail...a scary thought.
One last thing is that a very important piece of mail addressed to me
from the tax assessor came to someone in a completely different part of
Eagle Rock, and they were kind enough to stick it in an envelope and send
it to me. I hope that everyone is that thoughtful and that we can help
each other with this growing ailment.
Best wishes, Karie

Hi Michael,
The reason I am writing is because of all the letters we've seen lately
complaining about their postal service. My mail carrier is Arlene, she is
wonderful. Comes about the same time every day and the mail is always in
the correct mailbox. She has been my mail carrier for several years. Eagle
Rock is a small town and because I have lived here for 45 years now I
would just about bet that the people complaining all have the same
carrier. We used to have him several years back and received the same kind
of service. I intend to contact the post office about the wonderful
service I now receive and mention my mail carrier by name. If we can do
something about the one bad apple delivering mail, all of Eagle Rock may
then have wonderful service. The little imp in me is just dying to know
the name of the carrier that is giving these poor citizens such bad
service!!!!
Take care.
