PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – VOTE WITH YOUR
WALLET!
BE PART OF THE VISION PROCESS
FOR THE NEW VONS DEVELOPMENT
On December 14th at the Eagle Rock Public
Library at 7pm, the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council will host a public
“charrette” (planning and visioning process for a specific property) to help
envision the development options for the future Vons site. Do not miss
it! The expanded property could be the site of many exciting uses.
Make sure that your voice is heard in this planning process!
BLUE HEN OPENS!
The Blue Hen Restaurant in the mini-mall between La
Roda and Argus (1743 Colorado Boulevard, Eagle Rock, CA 90041) opened Friday
for business, and what a triumph! If you can get a seat, come taste their
organic Vietnamese delicacies. I had the chicken curry, and it was
delicious. For more information, please stop in or check out Blue Hen’s
website at: http://www.eatatbluehen.com
or by phone at: (323) 982-9900
CARLOTTA’S PASSION IS SOMETHING
TO TRULY BE PASSIONATE ABOUT!
Carlotta's Passion Fine Art and Interiors (2012
Colorado Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90041) offers an exquisite collection of
investment quality antique and contemporary fine art, furniture, rugs, quilts,
and other textiles. I met Bob Squires, sole proprietor, on its
opening day, and was so pleased to find a man who is so committed to Eagle Rock
and to peace and justice throughout the world. Councilmember Antonio
Villaraigosa came and presented a certificate to welcome Bob Squires to
Eagle Rock.
Go see the gallery. It is a real treat!
Hours: Carlotta’s Passion Fine Art and Interiors is open
Tuesdays through Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The gallery is closed
on Monday. For more information, please contact: (323) 259-1563
SHOP EAGLE ROCK THIS HOLIDAY
SEASON! VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET!
As we conclude 2004, I am so proud to see that Los Angeles
and the nation have come to appreciate the many restaurants, coffee shops,
galleries, boutiques and other businesses in Eagle Rock. But our business
owners need our help.
I cannot stress strongly enough that every time you spend
money, you vote to keep that business alive. Please consider that as you
shop this holiday season. Who are the business owners that are investing
in your community? Who has been there for this community when others
waited to “test the market”? Your decisions are very important, so make
them wisely.

some time reading Scripture, and three guided meditations. The theme
of the morning is, To Love Justice: The Old Testament Prophets

A night of critical analysis of the media and public
opinion:
Edward Said: On Orientalism (1998, 40 min)
The late Edward Said's book Orientalism has been profoundly
influential in a range of disciplines since its 1978 publication. Said argues
that the western understanding of the Middle East as a place full of villians
and terrorists ruled by Islamic fundamentalism produces a deeply distorted
image of the diversity and complexity of Arab peoples. In this engaging and
lavishly illustrated interview he talks about the context within which the book
was conceived, its main themes, and how its original thesis relates to the
current understanding of "the Orient" as represented in the mass
media.
and
Constructing Public Opinion: How Politicians and the
Media Misrepresent the Public (2001, 32 min.)
In this film Professor Justin Lewis provides an innovative
lens through which to view the relationship between politics, media and the
public. He demonstrates how public opinon polls are used by the media to not
just reflect what Americans think, but to actually construct public opinion
itself. Exploding the myth that most Americans are moderate or
conservative, Constructing Public Opinion shows the way in which political
elites help to promote the military/industrial complex and how the media
sustains belief in an electoral system with a built-in bias against the
interests of ordinary people.

ROUTE 66 CELEBRATION SEPTEMBER 2005! BE PART OF IT!
This just in from the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council
and Scott Piotrowski of Route 66 Productions:
In September 2005, the Stater Brothers Route 66 Rendezvous
in San Bernardino will also be hosting the National Historic Route 66
Federation's annual Steinbeck Awards Ceremony. This will bring Route
66 Ambassadors from around the world to the event in San Bernardino.
The Steinbeck Awards are traditionally held in a different
city every year. The intent of the Federation is that the city hosting
the event holds a related International Route 66 Festival in conjuction with
the Awards in order to raise awareness of Route 66 in the local community and
raise awareness of the local community within Route 66 enthusiasts.
The dates for next year's event are officially September 15
– 18. However, the various California Route 66 organizations and museums are
coming together to host a variety of events thorughout the week leading up to
and including the Rendezvous. Those organizations include the California
Historic Route 66 Association, the California
Route 66 Museum (Victorville), the California Route 66
Preservation Foundation, the Route 66 "Mother Road" Museum (Barstow),
and 66 Productions, of which I am the director.
The events being discussed include, but are not limited to,
the following ideas. There are definite plans for two Route 66 Bus Tours,
one eastbound and one westbound, both originating and ending in San
Bernardino. The westbound tour will make it as far as the original
terminus of Route 66 at 7th and Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles. (I am
co-hosting both tours.) There will be a preservation seminar hosted in
part by the National Park Service's Route 66 Corridor Management Program,
based out of Santa Fe, NM. This is currently scheduled for two days
at the Aztec Hotel in Monrovia. There are also plans afoot for a
reception which will bring together Route 66 Ambassadors, local business
owners, and local preservation enthusiasts. The date and location for
that are still TBA. I am currently the chairperson of that committee, so
if anyone has any suggestions, or is willing to assist on that committee,
please let me know!
Other events include the John Steinbecks Awards Luncheon
(Friday, September 16), a Route 66 egroup breakfast (Sunday, September 18), a
Route 66 Authors / Artists exhibition (all weekend), and many other events, all
in addition to the usual Stater Brothers Route 66 Rendezvous events.
If anyone is interested in receiving more information about
any of the events, or perhaps is interesting in providing more ideas or serving
on any of the organizing committees, please contact me off-list at rt66prods@yahoo.com.

11. LETTERS FROM OUR
READERS
Last week, we ran this letter, but the RSVP information
had been submitted incorrectly by the letter’s author. Thank you, Lupe,
for bringing this mayoral debate to our attention!
Another major Mayoral Debate will be held on December 21st
at the Los Angeles County Museum’s Bing Auditorium. For the first
time in the history of the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters, we (I am
a member) are producing an event that will be regionally broadcast via
television, cable and radio. KABC, the ABC affiliate in Los Angeles, will
take the live feed from Cable Channel 36 and rebroadcast the program in its
entirety on Sunday, December 26. KCET, the PBS affiliate in LA, will
highlight moments from the event and broadcast them in a half-hour segment on
the 23rd. Cable Channel 36 will air the event live as well as run it
repeatedly between now and the election.
And finally, please know that everyone is invited - your
colleagues at work should come, your family if they vote or work in LA, your
kids' friends' parents, teachers at schools - we have 300 seats to fill.
(It's a huge auditorium). As an added feature, the LA County Museum of
Art (where the Bing Auditorium is located) is free to the public after 5:00 PM,
so come a bit early, check out the galleries, stop in to the gift shop, get a
snack and be in your seats by air time: 5:45 pm. RSVP
by email: mayorevent@lalcv.org

Vela, Eagle Rock
