  • The hours rush by and there is never enough time to do as thorough of a job as we would like to do; to thank all of the people who contribute so much to making Eagle Rock such a great place to live; to get the e-letter together and out to you, our readers, in a timely fashion.

    Winter is definitely coming (although to those who grew up in less temperate climates, it probably seems to be coming on tippy-toes). I can see my breath when I take the dogs walking in the morning and there are the piles of leaves in the parkways that let us know that there will soon be a bit of frost on the roofs in the dawn hours.

    It's a good time to give thanks to our new and renewing TERA members, whose generous contributions make it possible for TERA to put together next year's Eclectic Home Tour; to fund portions of the Eagle Rockdale Community Garden; to keep our own organization working and producing the e-letter, the newsletter, the community meetings, and to represent our members on issues that affect the quality of life in our community.

    So, on behalf of the TERA Board, thanks to all of our members and supporters. It gives us great pleasure to be working for Eagle Rock.

    CITY BUDGET

    ERNC SEEKS STAKEHOLDER INPUT ON BUDGET PRIORITIES — DEADLINE THIS FRIDAY DEC. 9

    The Mayor would like to hear from Neighborhood Council leaders regarding their communities’ preferred budget priorities and strategic choices. In order to make the best recommendations we can, the ERNC needs to hear from you! We are asking stakeholders to complete a budget survey and share their priorities with us, so that we can share them with the Mayor throughout the budget process. Simply print out the survey, complete it and mail it back to us. You may download the survey at:

    www.eaglerockcouncil.org/pdf/BudgetSurvey_ERNC.pdf

    Please mail completed surveys back to the ERNC by THIS FRIDAY DEC. 9

    Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council; PO Box 41652; Los Angeles, CA 90041

    The ERNC will compile the results of surveys from Eagle Rock stakeholders and use that information to make recommendations to the Mayor on behalf of the community. Thanks in advance for your participation as the ERNC takes an active role in this important process.

    Here is a message from the Mayor about budget priorities.

    Tough Choices for a Brighter Future

    The City's budget is one of the tools that we use to help make our dreams a reality. I am ready to work with you on developing a City budget that embodies our dreams for Los Angeles and helps us achieve the following goals:

    • Improving public safety;

    • Improving our public schools;

    • Reducing gang violence;

    • Reducing traffic congestion and better connecting communities to each other;

    • Protecting the quality of the water we drink and the air we breathe; and

    • Making Los Angeles the leading economic and cultural center of the world.

    Realizing the goals I have set out for our City will not be easy. Similar to the roads we travel on every day, there are numerous obstacles that we must maneuver to reach our destination. These obstacles include a budget shortfall of over $245 million, limited revenue sources, rising energy costs, and an aging infrastructure.

    As a full-service city, there is also the challenge of providing Parks, Libraries, Sidewalks, Trash Disposal and a variety of other essential services at the level and quality expected and deserved by you.

    Despite these financial pressures, our goals are achievable. However, developing our City budget will mean making some difficult choices between what we would like to do and what we can afford to do - the same decisions faced by families in Los Angeles every day.

    Given these pressures, it is clear that tough choices must be made today if we expect a brighter future for our City. I am ready to confront this challenge and pledge to develop a budget that is fiscally responsible and addresses our City's needs. With your help, I know that we will be successful.

    PARK PLAN & THE AUTRY

    Dear Friend of Griffith Park,

    If you would like to continue having a voice in the future of Griffith Park, it is vital that you attend the public meeting taking place this Monday evening, December 5th at the Griffith Park Ranger Station.

    Despite overwhelmingly negative feedback to the current Draft of the Griffith Park Master Plan, ominous signs are emerging that the final version of the Plan will promote the Park's paving and commercialization. With the cooperation of the City, the Draft is being showcased this month to professional associations whose members profit from major construction projects and urban development.

    The current Draft leads the Park in this direction, despite the public's expressed desires. The consensus in favor of preservation that emerged at the initial Master Plan Public Workshops was ignored. The community organizations listed in the Draft as helping to prepare it, were not consulted. Created without citizen participation, the Draft does not reflect the public will.

    That is why several community groups united to demand that the final Draft of the Master Plan be vetted and rewritten in an open and public process. The Griffith Park Draft Master Plan Working Group that resulted derives its authority from your participation. Without your presence at the Master Plan Working Group meetings, the process will be marginalized and, ultimately, derailed.

    Don't allow your voice to be extinguished. Don't let Griffith Park be destroyed. Attend Monday's meeting, support the public process, and continue to make your opinions known:

    PINOCCHIO

    PASADENA, CALIF. (Dec. 2, 2005) - Kidspace Children's Museum, located in Pasadena's Brookside Park, next to the Rose Bowl, invites families to an entertaining staging of the much-loved story, Pinocchio, performed by Visiting Artists Traveling Lantern Theater Company, Saturday, December 10, beginning promptly at 1p.m.

    During this engaging and interactive rendition, two actors will perform all roles, taking children and adults from the very beginning of Pinocchio's journey, from a bad little puppet to a good, courageous human being. The play will run for approximately 45 minutes and is based directly on the original story of Pinocchio, written during the 1880s, by C. Collodi.

    "The story of Pinocchio is a favorite for children because each child can relate to going through his or her own similar situation where there are choices that need to be made," comments K.B. Mercer, a professional actor who, along with her husband Doren Elias, runs the Traveling Lantern Theater Company.

    The Traveling Lantern Theater Company is a San Diego-based performance troupe dedicated to producing high- quality children> '> s theater with a distinctly American bent. The Traveling Lantern Theater Company performs for community groups, and at schools and libraries. For more information, visit www.travelinglantern.com.

    LETTERS TO TERA

    I've received a number of very supportive letters since the last e-letter. I'm not going to run all of them because in my own mind, it seems a little self serving and, as some have reminded me, the e-letter, even in its present form, is more than long enough. But I deeply appreciate hearing from you and try to answer personally those letters that aren't printed. And, as noted below, I've always allowed those letters that are critical to run. MT

    Hi Scott,

    Please Add the Neighborhood Council Site to Useful Links

    thanks,

    Dear Michael –

    For what it's worth, I just had to note that I miss your thoughtful opening remarks to the TERA e- letter. If I remember correctly, I think that someone was a bit critical of these in a past letter to the editor and really hope that they weren't the reason for your pared-back/all-business openings of late. Don't let one curmudgeon get you down –- come on, people should just skim through things they don't care to read and move on with it!

    That said, the effort to write the thoughtful pieces you have in the past notably takes time. I just felt the need to let you know that I always enjoyed your irreverent take on whatever the topic du jour was. It always gave me a laugh or two and, more importantly, provoked thought about the happenings/circumstances around our neighborhood which is exactly what a community letter should aim to do.

    Regardless – the email is a big job, so thanks for your ongoing efforts to keep us all informed.

    Thanks,

    Susannah Scott

    Thank you, Susannah.

    Those who are rude and uncivil can make life a little less pleasant for us all, can't they? That being said, the only reason the president's messages have been shorter and less topical of late is the added time it takes for me to edit the e-letter. Once we have a permanent editor, I look forward to resuming my life's work of annoying the self-important and humorless. Thanks for your kind words and thanks to the others who have written kind words along a similar vein. MT

    I love your new look. The colors are soft on the eyes. The font is just fine for me, and I don't have problems opening the email. I like that the index is on the right for quick review.

    Keep up the good work,

    kathy gallegos
