Historic Home
Inspection |

Local Partnership Helps to Preserve Los Angeles Originals
The Los Angeles Conservancy has formed a joint partnership with the
American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) and the California Real Estate
Inspectors Association (CREIA) to raise awareness about the benefits of
historic home inspections. “We’re excited about the partnership,” said
Linda Dishman, executive director of the Conservancy, the country’s
largest local historic preservation organization. “L.A.’s historic
properties are irreplaceable, and they have special needs when it comes to
inspections. It’s important for owners or buyers of historic structures to
find an inspector who understands preservation and can identify
maintenance issues that might compromise their safety or integrity. A
number of ASHI and CREIA members fit the bill, with specialized expertise
in helping owners understand how they can make repairs and adapt a
historic home for modern use while maintaining its unique character.”
Participate in a Historic Home Inspection
The Conservancy will formally announce the partnership at a joint press
conference on Tuesday, January 9 at the 1887 Heim House in Angelino
Heights, one of L.A.’s most historic neighborhoods. In conjunction with
the announcement, ASHI and CREIA representatives will conduct a walk-along
home inspection for members of the media and other guests.
“The Heim House is a Los Angeles Historic- Cultural Monument and part
of a National Register Historic District,” said Rob Paterkiewicz, ASHI’s
executive director. “It’s the perfect location to kick- off this
partnership and to show people what’s involved in a historic home
inspection.”
Details about the walk-along inspection are below:
Date: Tuesday, January 9, 2007
Time: 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. (Tour immediately follows the announcement)
Location: 1320 Carroll Ave., Los Angeles 90026 (Located near the corner
of Carroll Avenue and NE Edgeware Road)
CREIA member and historic home expert Duane McCutcheon will lead the
tour. “Older homes have a lot of stories to tell, and the Heim House is no
exception – it’s a gem of Victorian architecture and Los Angeles history,”
said McCutcheon. “Inspectors of historic homes can read a building,
sharing its history with clients and helping preserve it for future
generations.”
Find a Historic Home Inspector
Home and building owners interested in locating a historic
home/building inspector in their area can visit www.ASHI.org
or www.CREIA.org.
Using the advanced “Find an Inspector” search engine home owners can
customize their search and identify inspectors by language, specialty and
ancillary services provided.
In addition to the “Find an Inspector” tool, home owners can learn more
about a house and what to expect from a home inspection by taking the
industry’s first audio-guided Virtual Home Inspection at www.ASHI.org.
The online tool simulates an interactive tour of a home’s 10 major
systems, in accordance with ASHI’s Standards of Practice, providing an
overview of each area, along with photos depicting common problems and
defects.
For more information about the partnership or to RSVP for the
walk-along inspection on Tuesday, January 9, please contact Alissa Lew at
312.861.5225 or by email at Alissa.Lew@mslpr.com

Puggle Rescue
Call! |
 |
A sweet little puggle (pug and beagle mix) wandered into our Holistic
Holiday Faire and made quite a few new friends. Unfortunately, he didn’t
find anyone to take him home, so he ended up in a shelter. I hear that
puggles are an expensive breed, if you get one from a breeder. This guy
had a microchip in his ear, so he once had a good home, but the microchip
information is out of date.
He is a very sweet little guy, and I feel a little bit responsible for
him. If you know anyone who might even consider adopting him, would you
please forward this email? I’ll chip in some money for food! Please help
if you can!
For more info, go to http://www.cityofla.org/ANI/AnimalIDSearch.htm
and type in his ID: A845410.
Thanks, Cheryl

Highland Park
Farmers Market |
 |
sbudick@caltech.edu writes:
Guavas have been available at the market for the last few months, with
pink fleshed varieties predominating. This past week however, Lim's Apple
Farm brought a particularly sweet, white fleshed fruit, with very few
seeds to the market, perfect for eating out of hand. Other winter fruits
available at the market include a wealth of citrus, from Satsuma mandarins
to oro blanco grapefruits as well as navel, valencia and blood oranges.
Johna's organic orchard continues to bring wonderful Fuji apples to the
market, while Tamai farms has been picking very sweet strawberries and
Santiago farms still has beautiful red and yellow raspberries as well as
blackberries. Sweet corn is holding on at Tamai farms, though probably not
for much longer, so get it while it lasts. Persimmons, pomegranates,
grapes and asian pears are also all available from multiple vendors.
As for vegetables, celery made its first appearance of the season at
Tamai Farms. I don't know if it's true that eating celery consumes more
calories than it contains, but it probably can't be that far from the
truth, so why not take a few stalks for lunch? In "It Happened One Night"
a hungry Claudette Colbert says to Clark Gable (paraphrasing), "Eat a raw
carrot? Why I'm not that desperate!" She obviously never tried one of the
wonderfully sweet and crunchy specimens available from either Tamai, Gama
or Santiago Farms however, one of which I take with my lunch every day.
Beautiful and amazingly nutritious deep green spinach, broccoli,
cauliflower, green beans, beets, potatoes and sweet potatoes are all
currently in season at the market as well, so you really have no excuse
for heading to the supermarket instead of the farmers market this week.
Finally, to spice things up, don't forget to stop by Frog Dog Farms for
every herb you might need, from sage to cilantro, tarragon to thyme. For a
complete list of what's available at the market as well as recipe ideas,
stop by htt
p://www.friends4oldlafarmersmarket.org .
As always, you can also pick up fresh bread, along with artisanal
cheese and fruit preserves at the market. And if you come hungry, you need
not go home that way, with roasted chicken, corn and potatoes, along with
Korean barbeque and tamales vying to fill you up.
Please stop by the market for fresh, field- ripened, high quality
produce from local farmers and spend time with your friends, neighbors and
other community members.
The Highland Park Certified Farmers Market is located adjacent to the
Highland Park Gold Line station at Marmion Way between Ave. 57 & 58
and operates Tuesdays from 3-7PM.

More on DSL
People looking for DSL should go to www.dslreports.co
m. There you can check for availability of DSL on YOUR line. I'm
getting my DSL from sonic.net - all of their support is in Santa Rosa,
California. I just ordered DSL last month and it took only 3 days from
placing the order online to receiving the equipment in the mail and having
service. And its the el-cheapo DHCP version for $13 or so /month. I
wouldn't recommend even calling SBC/PACBELL/ATT or whatever they are
called by the time you read this.
Nathan Dalleska, Eagle Rock
I checked this out and, as I had been previously advised, the only
two options open to me are satellite service through Hughesnet and cable
service through Time Warner Cable. DSL is not available through the phone
lines in my little part of ER no matter who the ISP might be. Thanks for
the info, Nathan.

I wanted to respond to last week’s discussion about trees in eagle rock
and the need for more. Not only will it improve our air quality and smog
levels but the shade is also pleasant on hot Summer days. I live on busy
York Blvd. near the 2 freeway and have noticed the lack of trees along
this stretch from the 2 to the crossing of Eagle Rock and York. Wouldn't
it be great to transform the landscape and have trees running along this
stretch? Maybe people would slow down a bit. Is anyone living on this
stretch interested in taking care of watering a new tree?
Northeasttrees.org will give you a free tree as long as you promise to
water it (I do believe you need to contact the city before planting in the
area between sidewalk and street.) I'd be willing to do some digging if
others promised to water their trees.

I enjoy the tips about good places in Eagle Rock and the surrounding
area. I recently found a great place to get you car smog checked. The man
who owns it is friendly and helpful. He provides comfortable oversize
plastic lawn chairs to wait in. He also offers free cold drinks to
customers while they wait. He has a customer card program like coffee
houses use. It is a plastic card that he punches out when you get a smog
test done. Anyone can use it, so you have it punched out when family and
friends go. When you have 3 visits punched on the card you get the fourth
test free. It is a "test only” center. It is called Arroyo Smog & Test
Only Center, the address is: 7021 N. Figueroa St. Phone: 323-254-2352.
It's not exactly in Eagle Rock, but it's close by. As a disclaimer; I have
no financial or other kind of interest in the business, I don't even know
the owner's name.
