THE FINAL WORD – CHINESE PROVERB

1.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – VONS DEVELOPMENT WILL
INCLUDE COMMUNITY INPUT – COME SHARE YOUR IDEAS!
The first mayoral debate, sponsored by the League of Women
Voters, will be telecast live on KNBC Channel 4 and KWHY Channel 22 at 7pm –
8pm tonight. Be sure to catch the first of many mayoral debates this
election season! In our Letters from Readers section, Lupe Vela
highlights one of the next major debates on December 21st.
FATTY’S EXPANDS!
For a real treat, go see the newly expanded Fatty’s café,
vegetarian restaurant, wine bar and magazine rack! I went the
grand-reopening and was very impressed with the new kitchen, additional seating
and special menu just for this week, thanks to a tour by owners Kim Dingle
and Aude Charles. It was also sweet to see LaDell and Lani Stapp, who
had owned the property as a beloved auto shop for decades, taking in the new
ambiance. I had their vegetarian chili, which was just perfect for the
cold Wednesday evening. Come taste their new grand opening menu before
the items disappear!
SURPRISED ABOUT THE DEMOLITION
OF THE HELMS BAKERY? SO WERE WE
Item #8 below by ERNC Land Use Committee Co-Chair Jessica
Wethington McLean chronicles the demolition process and the lack of notice
throughout the community that the Helms Bakery building would be part of
those taken down by Safeway Corporation in order to create a new
integrated site for the Vons supermarket at the corner of La Loma and
Figueroa Boulevard. While the building did not have Historic Cultural
Landmark status, it nonetheless was part of Eagle Rock’s rich history.
Please join the TERA Land Use Committee and assists
with planning for the future Vons site and completes its Commercial Building
Survey to ensure that other historic treasures are preserved.
BE PART OF THE VISION PROCESS
FOR THE NEW VONS DEVELOPMENT
On December 14th at the Eagle Rock Public
Library at 7pm, the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council will host a public
“charrette” (planning and visioning process for a specific property) to help
envision the development options for the future Vons site. Please see
Item #8 for further details.

of the Boulevard Sentinel, they have selected a winner of the free
landscaping front yard “make-over” prize worth up to $5000!
The winner is The

2. BLUE
HEN ROOSTS IN EAGLE ROCK! – FRIDAY, DECEMBER 3RD
Thanks to TERA Lifetime member Rebecca Niederlander for
this new business announcement!
The Blue Hen Restaurant in
the mini-mall between La Roda and Argus (1743 Colorado Boulevard, Eagle Rock,
CA 90041) will open tomorrow for business.
I met the folks doing it and they seem really lovely.
The decor is perfect, mostly modernist with swell lighting. The menu is simple,
with no entree over $8.25. There are lots of vegetarian options,
thankfully, some noodle soups, and chicken entrees. They say we” support
local farms and sustainable farming principles, as well as buy from local farmers
and organic suppliers whenever possible."
I am so very thrilled with this new dining establishment
coming in. We have been watching their renovation of the space for some
time now and they have done exactly the right thing with the space. The
Historic Preservation committee would be overjoyed.

12. UP FROM THE
RUBBLE OF THE OLD HELMS BAKERY… “CHARRETTE” MEETING ON VONS SITE – TUESDAY,
DECEMBER 14TH
Dear Eagle Rock Stakeholders:
I hope you had an enjoyable Thanksgiving!
As you may have read in our update a couple of weeks ago,
the Vons-owned properties along La Loma Road and Figueroa in ERNC Sub-District
Two are under demolition. Demolition activity is expected to continue for the
next one to two weeks, so please be aware of that as you travel in the
area. At present, no application has been made to rebuild on that
property, and until such time as development is approved, the lots will be
planted with grass.
A number of people have asked about the corner building,
formerly the Helms Bakery. The building sat boarded up and vacant for a
number of years and efforts were not undertaken to look into landmarking it for
historic status. As such, its demolition was allowable by law.
Local historians have indicated they do not feel the building was of
significant historical or architectural interest, though it obviously held
memories for many who have lived in the area for decades. The ERNC and
the 14th District City Council Field Office were aware demolition would be
occurring to the residential buildings along La Loma Road, and information to
that effect was sent in an ERNC notice to stakeholders before it began.
However, we were not aware this would include the former bakery building on
Figueroa Street until the morning demolition began.
The good news is that the “Helms Olympic Bread”
crests from the exterior of the bakery building, as well as a large round
plaster crest featuring a shaft of wheat from the inside of the building, have
been saved. They are intact, in safekeeping, awaiting a decision from the
community about what they1’d like to do with these elements. Perhaps one
can be placed on whatever new buildings go in at this site. Other
suggestions are welcome.
Thanks to stakeholder Cardie Molina for suggesting the
crests be saved. Special thanks to Michael Cathey in the 14th District Field
Office for springing to action when news came of the bulldozers at the Helms
Building.
Michael had seen my email to the Von’s folks (sent just the
night before) requesting to save the crests. Michael immediately called
the relevant corporate entities and called me. We spent half the morning
on site, and arrangements were made with the very cooperative construction crew
to save the crests from demolition. Also, thanks to Michael Nogueira
for agreeing to pick-up and store the crests.
Of course now the questions are what services are most
needed, and what can feasibly be developed in the Figueroa / La Loma / Colorado
Blvd. area? On December 14th, the ERNC’s Land Use & Planning
Committee will host a community planning session, led by professional urban
planners, to get input from stakeholders and answer these questions and
more. Please mark your calendars now for TUESDAY DECEMBER 14th at 7pm
at the EAGLE ROCK LIBRARY.
Attend and take part in creating a vision for the area!
Hope to see you there.
Sincerely,
Jessica Wethington McLean

ROUTE 66 CELEBRATIONS SEPTEMBER 2005! BE PART OF IT!
This just in from the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council
and Scott Piotrowski of Route 66 Productions:
In September 2005, the Stater Brothers Route 66
Rendezvous in San Bernardino will also be hosting the National Historic Route
66 Federation's annual Steinbeck Awards Ceremony. This will bring
Route 66 Ambassadors from around the world to the event in San Bernardino.
The Steinbeck Awards are traditionally held in a different
city every year. The intent of the Federation is that the city hosting
the event holds a related International Route 66 Festival in conjunction with
the Awards in order to raise awareness of Route 66 in the local community and
raise awareness of the local community within Route 66 enthusiasts.
The dates for next year's event are officially September 15
– 18. However, the various California Route 66 organizations and museums are
coming together to host a variety of events throughout the week leading up to
and including the Rendezvous. Those organizations include the California
Historic Route 66 Association, the California
Route 66 Museum (Victorville), the California Route 66
Preservation Foundation, the Route 66 "Mother Road" Museum (Barstow),
and 66 Productions, of which I am the director.
The events being discussed include, but are not limited to,
the following ideas. There are definite plans for two Route 66 Bus Tours,
one eastbound and one westbound, both originating and ending in San
Bernardino. The westbound tour will make it as far as the original
terminus of Route 66 at 7th and Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles. (I am
co-hosting both tours.) There will be a preservation seminar hosted in
part by the National Park Service's Route 66 Corridor Management Program,
based out of Santa Fe, NM. This is currently scheduled for two days
at the Aztec Hotel in Monrovia. There are also plans afoot for a
reception which will bring together Route 66 Ambassadors, local business
owners, and local preservation enthusiasts. The date and location for
that are still TBA. I am currently the chairperson of that committee, so
if anyone has any suggestions, or is willing to assist on that committee,
please let me know!
Other events include the John Steinbeck Awards Luncheon
(Friday, September 16), a Route 66 egroup breakfast (Sunday, September 18), a
Route 66 Authors / Artists exhibition (all weekend), and many other events, all
in addition to the usual Stater Brothers Route 66 Rendezvous events.
If anyone is interested in receiving more information about
any of the events, or perhaps is interesting in providing more ideas or serving
on any of the organizing committees, please contact me off-list at rt66prods@yahoo.com.

There is a new music store, Don’s Music, opening at
4873 Eagle Rock Blvd, I took a peek inside and it looks great. He has all
independent labels, very eclectic selection, and it looks like he has a lot of
jazz. He should be open by your e.letter’s publication!

Hi TERA,
We have a young Drake Chinese Elm tree that was planted two
years ago in a poor location of our yard. As a result, it will have to be
removed. We have nurtured this tree thus far and would like to see it
live to maturity in the proper place with a caring owner. Any
takers? It's free, just come and get it. Call us at (323) 344-0012
for more information.

Eagle Rock is now famous in Tampa, Florida! Jane Powell came
to speak and we had a full page feature article on the front page of "At
Home" in the Tribune.
Jane Powell’s two latest books, Bungalow: The Ultimate
Arts and Crafts House and Bungalows: Exterior Details include
many pictures of Eagle Rock houses and identify their location. The Interior
Details will be out next year and I am sure we'll be yet more famous with its
publication!
I am having a good time here in my new bungalow
neighborhood, but miss you all very much. (You can take the girl outa the
'hood, but...)

As I was browsing the magazine rack while waiting for my
dinner at the newly reopened and beautiful Fatty's, I was thrilled to notice a
wonderful article featuring a home in Eagle Rock in the Fall 2004 issue of Atomic
Ranch! The article is called "Eagle Rocks" and begins
on page 18. Full color, 11 pages, all about homeowners Apryl Lundsten
and David Spancer's adventures restoring and researching a true treasure in
mid-century modern home design right here in Eagle Rock! There's also a
great blurb on The Chalet. So as you're checking out the new and
improved Fatty's, be sure to pick up a copy of Atomic Ranch for yourself
and read about our new neighbors!

Another major Mayoral Debate will be held on December 21st
at the Los Angeles County Museum’s Bing Auditorium. For the first
time in the history of the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters, we (I am
a member) are producing an event that will be regionally broadcast via
television, cable and radio. KABC, the ABC affiliate in Los Angeles, will
take the live feed from Cable Channel 36 and rebroadcast the program in its
entirety on Sunday, December 26. KCET, the PBS affiliate in LA, will
highlight moments from the event and broadcast them in a half-hour segment on
the 23rd. Cable Channel 36 will air the event live as well as run it
repeatedly between now and the election.
And finally, please know that everyone is invited - your
colleagues at work should come, your family if they vote or work in LA, your
kids' friends' parents, teachers at schools - we have 300 seats to fill.
(It's a huge auditorium). As an added feature, the LA County Museum of
Art (where the Bing Auditorium is located) is free to the public after 5:00 PM,
so come a bit early, check out the galleries, stop in to the gift shop, get a
snack and be in your seats by air time: 5:45 pm. RSVP by email:
