There are only 10 more shopping days until December 25th. Arrrghhh!!!
On the other hand, one does not have to stray too far from home to do ones
shopping with all the great shops that are in Eagle Rock.
This past week there have been a lot of responses to Mona Field’s
complaint about the lack of DSL service for all of Eagle Rock as well as
some phone calls and letters about the continuing litter and tagging
problems in Eagle Rock. At its recent Board meeting the TERA Board of
Directors agreed to focus on three areas of concern over the next few
months. In no particular order, they are to work on partnering with other
entities and organizations to provide more street furniture and litter
receptacles along Eagle Rock and Colorado Boulevards; to look into getting
safe cross walks on those same to Boulevards, and to refocus on issues of
historic preservation in Eagle Rock. This might not sound like a lot, but
when added to the existing workload of the Home Tour, the Community
Garden, Preservation, Planning and Development Issues, these items become
substantial undertakings that require the expenditure of resources and
volunteer time. And there is no doubt that throughout the year there will
be various crisis, real and perceived, that will divert resources and
efforts from these three endeavors. We’ll keep you posted on progress.

Highland Park
Farmers Market |
 |
sbudick@caltech.edu writes:
Guavas have been available at the market for the last few months, with
pink fleshed varieties predominating. This past week however, Lim's Apple
Farm brought a particularly sweet, white fleshed fruit, with very few
seeds to the market, perfect for eating out of hand. Other winter fruits
available at the market include a wealth of citrus, from Satsuma mandarins
to oro blanco grapefruits as well as navel, valencia and blood oranges.
Johna's organic orchard continues to bring wonderful Fuji apples to the
market, while Tamai farms has been picking very sweet strawberries and
Santiago farms still has beautiful red and yellow raspberries as well as
blackberries. Sweet corn is holding on at Tamai farms, though probably not
for much longer, so get it while it lasts. Persimmons, pomegranates,
grapes and asian pears are also all available from multiple vendors.
As for vegetables, celery made its first appearance of the season at
Tamai Farms. I don't know if it's true that eating celery consumes more
calories than it contains, but it probably can't be that far from the
truth, so why not take a few stalks for lunch? In "It Happened One Night"
a hungry Claudette Colbert says to Clark Gable (paraphrasing), "Eat a raw
carrot? Why I'm not that desperate!" She obviously never tried one of the
wonderfully sweet and crunchy specimens available from either Tamai, Gama
or Santiago Farms however, one of which I take with my lunch every day.
Beautiful and amazingly nutritious deep green spinach, broccoli,
cauliflower, green beans, beets, potatoes and sweet potatoes are all
currently in season at the market as well, so you really have no excuse
for heading to the supermarket instead of the farmers market this week.
Finally, to spice things up, don't forget to stop by Frog Dog Farms for
every herb you might need, from sage to cilantro, tarragon to thyme. For a
complete list of what's available at the market as well as recipe ideas,
stop by htt
p://www.friends4oldlafarmersmarket.org .
As always, you can also pick up fresh bread, along with artisanal
cheese and fruit preserves at the market. And if you come hungry, you need
not go home that way, with roasted chicken, corn and potatoes, along with
Korean barbeque and tamales vying to fill you up.
Please stop by the market for fresh, field- ripened, high quality
produce from local farmers and spend time with your friends, neighbors and
other community members.
The Highland Park Certified Farmers Market is located adjacent to the
Highland Park Gold Line station at Marmion Way between Ave. 57 & 58
and operates Tuesdays from 3-7PM.

LETTERS |

Mona created quite a stir with her letter about the lack of
availability of DSL in some parts of Eagle Rock. Here are some of the
responses:
Regarding your DSL frustration; you can add me!! I live on the corner
of Las Flores and Ellenwood Place a couple hundred feet from Colorado
Blvd. and for 9 years have been asking WHEN ???? When I first called the
late Pac Bell, I was told by the honchos in the DSL dept that Eagle Rock
was an unmarketable area (Don't EVEN get me started) and to keep checking
maybe in about 3 years. Well, you can guess my frustration!! I refused to
go with the then cable company in our area (now, no longer) because I was
fed up with their bad service and had switched to Dish.
There isn't a day that goes by that my stomach does a slow burn as I
slowly see the minutes go by with my dialup service as I receive and send
my messages for work.
Mona, if it means we have to get a petition going and stomp on our City
and State Capital steps count me in.
They don't call me the chiwawa for nothing! Down with the DSL blues!
Tere Cruz (chiwawa@jps.net)

I don't understand the DSL non-dial-up problem from AT&T in Eagle
Rock. I live on North Maywood and have had this service for over a year.
It is true that I have talked twice with India about lapse in service, but
each time a lineman came and fixed it quickly. Indeed, this e-mail is from
my DSL account.
Brice Harris
_____________________________________ Friends, for what it's
worth, I've had DSL service at my home in Eagle Rock, over Pacific
Bell/SBC/AT&T lines, for a couple of years now. The issue is NOT "can
it be done in Eagle Rock?" The issue is that the lower cost, "dynamic" DSL
(which essentially is a time-share DSL line) like that offered by AT&T
or Verizon, isn't available because AT&T is putting money into
infrastructure where they think they can get the highest return on their
dollars--which is in more commercial areas, not residential communities.
There are other companies that offer DSL service- -and AT&T is
required to accept them if the house to which the DSL is being sent is
within 7,920 feet of the central AT&T building that holds the routing
equipment serving that telephone prefix. Earthlink is one such company. I
use Megapath (Megapath.Net) for a "static" DSL line (on which I am the
sole subscriber.) No, it's not the "come on" cheap prices that outfits
like AT&T offer* (the * meaning "for the first 12 months only) before
the price doubles or triples. With tax, I pay $64.39 per month for DSL
service, up to 5 email lines, on-line storage of 10M times the number of
email lines I use, 10M of web space, and 20 hours of dial-up access from
local numbers, anywhere I am in the country, for when I travel. There are
other companies which offer similar services, which AT&T is required
to connect to their lines to your house, by law, so I'm not peddling any
particular service.

Hi Michael,
I just read the Dec. 11-18 Los Angeles Business Journal and there is a
nice article about Larkin's Restaurant and owner Larkin Mackey. The
restaurant is also being followed for the Food Channel's "Opening Night".
Maria Nazario
Thanks Maria. It is my understanding that Larkin's is now supposed
to open in January of '07. The restored house on the site looks great!

Thanks for pointing out the notable Eagle Rock connections in this
month's Los Angeles Magazine "Power Players" issue. But in addition to the
breezy cover story on our former Council Member and the entertaining piece
on the origins of the Colorado Wine Company, the magazine's wise editors
also shined a spotlight on another recent addition to the Eagle Rock
landscape: Oinkster. The magazine's restaurant critic described the place
as a "fast-food- for-foodies-emporium," and proceeded to gush about their
house cured, applewood smoked pastrami, their tasty Belgian fries and
their "right-on" banana cream pie. Yum!

Hey Michael:
I see on the LA Planning Dept website that there are many historic
monument designated homes (looks like about 10+) in fair proximity to one
another (no surprise) near Hill Drive. Might be a fun idea (might already
have been done before my coming to Eagle Rock so might be moot) to do next
years as a historic monument tour...maybe getting people out from the city
to have a booth to talk to people about the benefits of getting their
house designated as historic and the paths of doing so. Since it would be
historic, maybe even (if possible...don't know if people would be on board
with this) to have a greeting docent at each door dressed in period
costume (perhaps playing the role of the original home owner or
interesting owner of note...like the cemetery tour on Wash Blvd. does).
Mike G.
Thanks, Mike. I'll check out the web site. I didn't know there were
so many. And I'll pass your letter on to the Home Tour Committee.
