Congratulations to Margaret "Madge" Russell,
California's oldest living resident, who celebrated her 112th birthday
Sunday at Solheim Lutheran Home, and received an honor from Councilman

21st-oldest person in the world, Ms. Russell was featured on the cover of the Daily

TERA SUPPORTS COLORADO WINE
COMPANY CONDITIONAL USE PERMIT
On Tuesday, November 2nd, Colorado Wine
Company owners John and Jennifer Nugent were joined by ERNC Land Use
Co-Chair Jessica Wethington McLean and myself on behalf of TERA to
support the request for a liquor license for wine tastings and wine
sales. TERA Land Use Committee Chair Michael Tharp wrote a
letter on behalf of the TERA Land Use Committee and I submitted a letter from
TERA in support. The Colorado Wine Company will be located at 2114
Colorado Boulevard, and the Nugents hope to be open in mid-December, just in
time for the holidays. For more information about Colorado Wine Company,
please contact www.cowineco.com
ERNC SUPPORTS TERA’S EAGLE
ROCKDALE COMMUNITY GARDEN AND ART PARK
This just in from TERA Board Member Mary Tokita,
Project Manager of the Eagle Rockdale Community Garden:
On Monday night, the ERNC Board voted to pay $1800 to
cover the cost of the DWP meter for the gravel lot north of the garden (the
site that my neighbors planted with me last year). I'm so pleased that the ERNC
is helping me repay for the generosity of Dave Peck and Paul Nardi,
who hand watered the garden from their own spigots, so that all of us could
enjoy the greenery. I'd also like to take the opportunity to thank Martin
Kelley, John Stillion, Eric Warren and many others who donated plants to
the site last year, and continue to drop in new arrivals now and then.
ERNC LAND USE COMMITTEE VOTES TO
CREATE A COMMUNITY PLANNING PROCESS FOR VONS PROPERTY
At the ERNC Land Use meeting of October 28th, the
committee voted to create a planning process to envision pedestrian-friendly,
potentially mixed-use, community-oriented plans for the Vons property at the
corner of Colorado Boulevard and La Loma – a property of paramount importance
to Eagle Rock.
In the next weeks, with the support of the City Council
office, the ERNC Land Use and Planning Committee will sponsor a series of
planning meetings regarding this property. This charette among community
leaders and stakeholders will allow us to present to you a cohesive plan,
representative of the goals of the overall community and the needs and opportunities
for this corner of Eagle Rock. We will let you know about the new dates
and times for these planning meetings.

ROCK ELEMENTARY WINS NATIONAL AWARD! – CELEBRATE NOVEMBER 9TH!
LAUSD'S ONLY
NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED SCHOOL FOR ACADEMIC AND STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IN 2004!
EAGLE ROCK
ELEMENTARY (ERE) CELEBRATES ITS SUCCESS
Tuesday,
November 9th
8:30 – 10 am
2057 Fair
Park Avenue, Eagle Rock, CA 90041
LOS ANGELES -- Eagle Rock Elementary (ERE), will
welcome back Principal Jane Sierra from a ceremony hosted by U.S.
Secretary of Education Rod Paige in Washington D.C., with a day of celebration
on Tuesday, November 9, 2004, from 8:30-10:00 a.m.
Local and state dignitaries, including Congressman Xavier
Beccera, State Education Secretary Richard Riordan, State Senator Jack Scott,
LAUSD Superintendent Governor Roy Romer and LAUSD Board of Education President
Jose Huizar, along with the Eagle Rock community, will come together to
honor the ERE students, teachers, parents and support staff that made this
accomplishment possible.
ERE, located in N.E. Los Angeles, is one of 33 public
schools in California, and 206 in the nation, to be chosen as a Blue Ribbon
School for 2004. The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) -- Blue Ribbon School program
is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The 21 year old program
encourages states to nominate public kindergarten through grade twelve schools
that are either academically superior or demonstrate dramatic gains in student
achievement. ERE went through a rigorous application process. The weight of the
application rested overwhelmingly on test scores, growth, and achievement in
reading and math over three years, including those for significant subgroups.
"The educators and students in these schools, as well
as the children's parents, deserve a lot of praise for working very hard to
receive this national recognition," said State Superintendent of Public
Instruction Jack O'Connell. "This shows that our efforts to increase
rigor in California schools is working, so students can receive a world-class
education that will carry them through to college or careers." O'Connell
nominated ERE last December for this federal recognition.
ERE’s Celebration of Learning will begin with the
entrance of the Eagle Rock High School Marching Band parading through the
streets of Eagle Rock from the high school to ERE. Afterwards, the school and
Principal Sierra -- who also will be personally honored in D.C. as one of five
principals in the country to receive the Terrel H. Bell Award for exceptional
school leadership, will be recognized with praises and proclamations, as well
as entertainment for all to enjoy. ERE is located at 2057 Fair Park Avenue, Los
Angeles, CA. 90041, (323) 254-6851.
Congratulations Principal Sierra and Eagle Rock
Elementary teachers, students and parents, for being a local and national model
for education! We all applaud you for this well-deserved honor!

will represent a variety of backgrounds and institutions. They include scholars
from area universities, practitioners, collectors, and staff from the Pacific
Asia Museum.
Occidental art history Professor Louise Yuhas, who

11. EAGLE ROCK’S
LILY SIMONE BOUTIQUE FEATURED IN THE NEW YORK TIMES!
Thanks to new TERA Board member
Pauline Mauro for sending this clip from the October 31st issue of The
New York Times! Congratulations to owner Simone Porter for this
wonderful highlight of your boutique and our community!
Pioneers of hip in search of
affordable housing and street cred have pushed the eastern boundary of Los
Angeles to its limit and are now looking north to Eagle Rock. This neighborhood
is home to a playground with a Neutra-designed clubhouse, some of the city's
best pizza (at Casa Bianca) and the Lily Simone boutique.
"There are a lot of young moms out here, mostly film industry people who
are fashion-forward," said the boutique's owner, Simone Porter, holding
her mini-pinscher, Lily, under one arm. "They still want to look stylish,
and there was nothing for them on this side of town." With its flea market
décor and local labels like Grey Ant, Pegah Anvarian, Ella Moss and Mon Petit
Oiseau, Lily Simone is the first fashion outpost in this gentrifying area; 5022

I have been providing voluntary advice and guidance since
late last year to a brilliant band of young stage actors who comprise one of
the best theatre companies working today in Los Angeles. Backstage West
has very positively reviewed of Furious Theatre Company's latest production,
and I am pleased to introduce you to this great bunch of performers. They
will perform Irish playwright Owen McCafferty's "Scenes from the Big
Picture" for the next three or so weeks at the Balcony Theatre next to the
Pasadena Playhouse, box office: (626) 356-7529. I've seen the play.
It is very, very good and very much worth experiencing. If you like
excellent theatre, I strongly recommend you take the opportunity to see it and
consider taking a look at the rest of the Furious season. If you go,
please let me know what you think.

14. THE FINAL WORD – HANNAH ARENDT
In honor of Eagle Rock
Elementary School!
“Education is the point at which we decide whether we love
our children enough not to expel them from our world and leave them to their
own devices, not to strike from their hands their chance of undertaking
something new -- but to prepare them in
advance for the task of renewing a common world.”
-- Hannah
Arendt (20th century), U.S. political philosopher
