1.  PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:  WHERE EVERYBODY KNOWS HIS NAME

Today's issue of our e.letter is about Thanksgiving.  It will not surprise you that I am most grateful for TERA and for Eagle Rock's gift of community.

I see the strength, character and caring of our community through the eyes of my five year-old son, Xavier.  Where else but Eagle Rock can he be greeted by name by the many adults in his life?

...by Joanne Turner, Kathleen Long, Mary Tokita and Esther Monk as he helps clean up and beautify Eagle Rock

...by Tracy King and the Home Tour volunteers as he went through the Home Tour this year

...by Robin as he gets his hair cut

...by Vic Parrino and the ERCPR board as he happily eats spaghetti and meatballs at our ERCPR meetings

...by Jenny Krusoe as he goes to puppet-making classes or TERA meetings at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock

...by the great firefighters at Fire Station 42, who are always eager to show him around the place

...by Camilo and Amelia Gonzalez at Saturday breakfasts

...by Michael Noguiera as Xavier goes to the Farmer's Market

...by Councilman Antonio Villaraigosa, LAUSD Board member David Tokofsky, Congressman Xavier Becerra, and former Councilmembers Nick Pacheco and Richard Alatorre as he participates in many political events.

Without knowing it, you are all helping our children understand the meaning of community, accountability and caring -- lessons he will share throughout his life.

It is this community, unlike any other, that makes Eagle Rock special; and for this and many other reasons supplied by other members of our community in this issue, I am truly thankful.

-- Hilary Norton Orozco

The 97-year-old Occidental Glee Club has enjoyed a national reputation for choral excellence since the 1950s. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Robert Shaw held regular choral workshops with the Glee Club, and in 1959, when there were separate men's and women's ensembles, the group made a recording with Bruno Walter at the maestro's request.  In 1969, the Glee Clubs were chosen to represent the United States at the Second International Collegiate Music Festival, sponsored by the Lincoln Center.

Donations will be accepted at the December 5 concert at St. Dominic's.

General admission for the December 6 concert at Oxy's Herrick Chapel is $12.00, $6.00 for students.  Tickets may be purchased at the door, or by calling (323) 259-2879. They will also be available online at: http://www.oxybookstore.com.

8.  AVENUE 50 STUDIO TAKES YOU HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS -- DECEMBER 6 -- 28

Shelter: Coming Home
December 6 through 28
Avenue 50 Studio
131 N. Avenue 50
Highland Park
Artistsą reception:
Saturday, Dec. 6, 7:00 10:00 p.m.

What if you didnąt have a home to go to for the holidays? That's the reality for thousands of Southern Californians whose houses were destroyed in the October wild fires, and itąs a way of life for thousands more who call Skid Row home.  But is "home" simply four walls and a roof, or is it something more? "Shelter: Coming Home" at Avenue 50 Studio presents 28 artists from downtown LA's skid row to South Africa, all exploring the meaning of home in an exhibit of paintings, assemblage, photography, and sculpture.  Through their vision we see that, at its core, shelter is a place that provides solace and refuge from the world at large.

"Shelter" delivers a powerful message about our universal need for home.  Sadly, satisfying that need is elusive for too many.  For those who live in houses with running water, air conditioners, and soft beds, "Shelter" will serve as a timely reminder to give thanks for their blessings.

"Shelter" showcases the work of professional artists and artists living in the streets.  Participants include Susan Giblan, O.G. Man, Joacquin Roebuck, Marie B., Jessica Grossbard, and Stephanie Hunter.  Additionally, the show will feature the work of Edith Abeyta and Charlene Roth, Abel Alejandre, Katrina Alexy, Linda Arreola, Victoria Taylor Alvarez, Rex Atienza, J.B. Bryte,  Nicky Cacavas, Beau Daignault, Carlos Garcia, Michael Gullberg, Tina Gulotta, Deborah Hosking, Jennifer Murphy, Angela Ortiz, Suzanne Siegel, Fortune Mduduzi Sitole (from South Africa), Virginia Valdes, Mona Vatamanu, Florin Tudor (from Bucharest, Romania) and Nan Wollman.  This exhibit has been curated by Jennifer Rowlan.

Avenue 50 Studio is open Tuesdays through Thursdays, from 10:00 a.m. to noon, and on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m.

12.  WE'VE GOT MAIL: WE GIVE THANKS

In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, we're devoting this week's letters section to thanksgiving messages that have been sent to us by e.letter readers over the past week.  We thank each of our special contributors for taking the time to honor the spirit of Thanksgiving by sharing their words of thanks, praise and appreciation with us today.

"Parents, you must be doing a lot right..."

"I am thankful for the more than 11 years I've spent as Assistant Principal at Eagle Rock Jr/Sr High School.  I am leaving after the first of the year to take on a new challenge with LAUSD in helping to open new schools, but I would like to thank the community for its unwavering support of the school and its efforts to improve student achievement and campus life.  I leave as we celebrate meeting our federal AYP requirements for No Child Left Behind, with substantially improved test scores and a student body, staff, administration and alumni that is great and looks forward to even more success.  Parents, you must be doing a lot right because the students at ERHS are indeed a pleasure to work with day after day, year after year.  Please continue to support your school--it's worth it.  Always an Eagle..."

-- Kitty Dustin, Eagle Rock

"Something breaks, and I have no idea what it is..."

"Right when I least know I'll need to be, I am thankful for Tritch Hardware (at the southwest corner of Townsend and Colorado).  Something breaks, and I have no idea what it is, what to call it, or how to fix it -- but Tritch always does.  I've taken in corroded, unidentifiable pieces of nothing, which the experts at Tritch always kindly examine as if they were made of gold, before they magically conjure up at least three options, which they then carefully explain in great detail (often citing prices like 24 cents, and sometimes requiring them to take a trip up a rickety old ladder.)  In addition to hardware, there's a surprising variety of things tucked away in the store (cooking utensils, craft supplies, toys.)  This is the hardware store everyone should have in their neighborhood, and I'm so thankful that we do!  Now, if they only fixed cars..."

--MeHee Hyun, TERA member, Eagle Rock resident

"I am not the only one who will miss her..."

"I am thankful for Suzanne Prieur, who has accomplished so much in her only four years in Eagle Rock.  Suzanne's intentions and subsequent actions have only positively affected Eagle Rock and its volunteer organizations, specifically the Women's Twentieth Century Club, the Eagle Rock Valley Historical Society, and, most of all, TERA.

"Suzanne's undying love for our town has spilled over in so many ways.  The success of TERA's annual Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour is largely her doing.  Her love of Eagle Rock's history has resulted in local historical designations, and it has encouraged others to pursue the same endeavor.  Her marketing skills and promotional talents on behalf of Eagle Rock are seldom equaled.

"Unfortunately for us, Suzanne is moving to Florida, and I am not the only one who will miss her greatly.  Florida is all the richer for her presence there.

"Thank you, Suzanne.  You are a gift to this world.

--Joanne Turner, TERA President Emeritus, Eagle Rock resident

"The comfort [of] familiar and friendly faces..."

"This year I am thankful for the community of friends, neighbors, and business owners that I've come to know in Northeast LA over the 15 years that I've been a resident here.  On October 7, my beloved father passed away suddenly at the age of 54.  On top of the terrible shock and loss that our family felt, there was also the overwhelming number of tasks involved in planning the memorial service and burial.  Our family was helped through this terrible time by so many local folks: our neighbor, who owns a local flower shop; the funeral home director, whom my husband and I had met earlier under very different circumstances; our young high school and middle-school-aged neighbors, who gave us a card and roses from their own yard; the teenage boys who live on our street, who helped us prepare our house for the more than 100 friends and relatives who gathered to celebrate my father's life; and the Filipino woman who takes care of our invalid neighbor, who gave me a hug one morning when I really needed one.

"Each one of these people helped us get through a terrible task. Their support and consideration has given me a deeper understanding of community and the comfort that familiar (and friendly) faces and places provide during difficult times."

-- Alexis Moreno, Highland Park
