1. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – EAGLE ROCK ELEMENTARY SHINES!
EAGLE ROCK ELEMENTARY SHINES IN
THE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT!
On Tuesday morning, the entire Eagle Rock Elementary (ERE)
faculty, staff and students joined elected officials and community dignitaries
in honoring Eagle Rock Elementary’s National Blue Ribbon School award.
I was so pleased to attend and watch these students bubble over with pride as
they were congratulated for their hard work.
While I am no reporter, there were a few statements made by
elected officials that are worth noting. The entire program, led by Principal
Jane Sierra who was personally honored in Washington, D.C. as one of five
principals in the country to receive the Terrel H. Bell Award for
exceptional school leadership, was fantastic. ERE’s Celebration of
Learning began with the entrance of the Eagle Rock High School
Marching Band parading through the streets of Eagle Rock from the high
school to ERE. Then an LAPD helicopter did a ceremonial “fly-over” for
the crowd. Principal Sierra honored Bert Wilson of UPS, who
ensured that the application package was properly labeled, thereby guaranteeing
its safe passage, and ultimately to the national award.
Congressman Xavier Becerra, State Education Secretary
Richard Riordan, State Senator Jack Scott, LAUSD Superintendent Governor Roy
Romer and LAUSD Board of Education President Jose Huizar honored
Principal Sierra and the students, faculty and parents.
Secretary Riordan and Senator Scott even stayed to talk to ERE
students! Some of the words of praise from the dignitaries
included:
"You're a great school. The nation has recognized
that you're a great school. You are doing great things with this
wonderful community." – LAUSD Superintendent Romer
"You have shown that all of us, if we put our time and
effort into learning, we can all make our community proud." -- LAUSD
President Jose Huizar
"Teachers, thanks so much for helping our kids
learn. We are also so proud of you, the students. Do you know what
you have done? In this nation, there are about 100 million public school
students. Only 206 schools got this award! Out of 760,000 students in LA,
only this school received the honor. Only 5 principals in the nation received
this award! What a remarkable achievement!” -- Congressman Xavier
Becerra
“Thank you to Congressman Xavier Becerra for helping the application
along. And thanks to the teachers who took on full-day Kindergarten. You
are raising the expectations and setting the standard for every school in the
District. If we set high standards, these students have shown that they
will rise to the occasion." -- David Tokofsky, LAUSD Board
Member and ERE 1st grade parent (daughter Rebecca led the Pledge of Allegiance)
Brad Alford, President and CEO of Nestle Brand Foods provided
refreshments. Michael Nogueira, President of the Eagle Rock Chamber of
Commerce (and parent of two ERE students), presented plaques to Principal
Sierra and ERE and 1000 bumper stickers to commemorate ERE’s award.
But the most moving speech, in my opinion, came from Superior
Court Judge Maureen Duffy-Lewis, who attended Eagle Rock Elementary
herself. She told the students never to give up on their dreams, and
quoted her own ERE teacher, who told her “Plan your work and work your
plan.” The Honorable Maureen Duffy-Lewis was a wonderful role
model, who told of struggles as a student, but represented one of the highest
achievements in law.
All in all, it was a fitting ceremony for a most remarkable
achievement! TERA congratulates Principal Sierra and Eagle Rock
Elementary teachers, students and parents, for being a local and national model
for education! We all applaud you for this well-deserved honor!
THANK YOU TO BUSINESSES OFFERING

3. “HILLSIDES
AND HIDEAWAYS” HISTORIC ECHO PARK HOME TOUR – NOVEMBER 14TH
Historic
Echo Park Home Tour
Sunday,
November 14
11 am – 4 pm
Check your brakes and put on your most comfortable walking
shoes! This year’s Historic Echo Park Home Tour on Sunday,
November 14th is all about “Hillsides and Hideaways,” a collection of 10 houses
located along some of the neighborhood’s steepest streets and highest
altitudes.
Built between 1908 and 1931, the homes range from tiny
pre-Crafstman cottages – one measured just 360 square feet when it was built –
to a Spanish Colonial compound constructed at the onset of the Depression. Some
homes are veritable hideaways, invisible from the street -- hidden by trees,
fences and even secret pathways. Throughout the tour, there are dramatic views
to the north, south, east and west, including downtown Los Angeles skyscrapers,
the San Gabriel Mountains and even Century City.
The tour runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with tickets and maps
available at Williams Hall, 2000 Stadium Way for $15 on the day of the tour.
Please contact the Echo Park Historical Society at ephs@HistoricEchoPark.org or call
(323) 860-8874 for more information.
Although several houses are within walking distance of each
other, the tour is broken up into two largely walkable clusters that must be
reached by car. If walking uphill doesn’t sound fun, a car will definitely be
handy for at least one or two stops.

COLLEGE TO CO-HOST SYMPOSIUM ON TIBETAN FURNITURE NOVEMBER 15TH
Occidental College is joining the Pacific Asia Museum to

Saturday, November 15th at the Pasadena Conference Center, Lower
Level, 300 East Green Street.
General admission tickets are $10 ($5 for students and teachers;
$8 for museum members). Please call (626) 449-2742 Ext. 35 to make your

will represent a variety of backgrounds and institutions. They include scholars
from area universities, practitioners, collectors, and staff from the Pacific
Asia Museum.
Occidental art history Professor Louise Yuhas, who
will pose questions to the speakers, said the symposium and related Pacific
Asia Museum exhibition is a rare opportunity to study and discuss centuries-old
furniture that in many cases was lost during the Chinese invasion of Tibet in
1949 and later during the Chinese Cultural Revolution of the 1960s.

New York Times! Congratulations to owner Simone Porter for this
wonderful highlight of your boutique and our community!

housing and street cred have pushed the eastern boundary of Los Angeles to its
limit and are now looking north to Eagle Rock. This neighborhood is home to a
playground with a Neutra-designed clubhouse, some of the city's best pizza (at Casa
Bianca) and the Lily Simone boutique. "There are a lot of young
moms out here, mostly film industry people who are fashion-forward," said
the boutique's owner, Simone Porter, holding her mini-pinscher, Lily, under one
arm. "They still want to look stylish, and there was nothing for them on
this side of town." With its flea market décor and local labels like Grey

ERNC FUNDS EAGLE ROCK COMMUNITY PROJECTS
In my last President’s
message, I included a thank you from Mary Tokita to the ERNC for contributing
towards TERA’s Eagle Rockdale Community Garden and Art Park. Thanks
to this summary by Jessica Wethington McLean, we can also highlight all of the
projects that the ERNC voted to support on November 1st.
Dear Eagle Rock Stakeholders:
We are pleased to inform you that at its Nov.1 Board Meeting, the Eagle Rock
Neighborhood Council (ERNC) voted to allocate $20,560 for community
improvement projects in 2004-5. This is in addition to more than $30,000
already allocated to community projects, events and initiatives out of the
combined 2003-4 and 2004-5 ERNC budgets.
This most recent process for requesting funding was begun in September, when
the ERNC hosted its first-ever Budget Priorities Forum, at which stakeholders
and organizations were invited to bring proposals for 2004-5 funding
consideration. Community groups and stakeholders were informed of the forum and
proposal process in an ERNC newsletter mailed to each Eagle Rock household, and
through emails to stakeholder and community databases.
Those projects which received the most points assigned by stakeholders through
an informal voting process at the Budget Priorities Forum were invited to
present to the ERNC Board for formal consideration. Information about approved
projects and motions which carried for funding at the Nov. 1 ERNC Board Meeting
is as follows:
In addition to the 2004-5 allocations above, ERNC previously
allocated more than $30,000 from its combined 2003-4 and 2004-5 budgets
to community improvement projects, events and initiatives, such as:
The intention is to make this project proposal process and
Budget Priorities Forum an annual part of the way the ERNC makes decisions
about which community projects to support.
The ERNC receives an annual $50,000 budget from the City of Los Angeles,
which is used for community improvement projects, communication with
stakeholders (newsletters, newspaper ads, and mailers), elections; meetings;
and operating expenses. All ERNC Board members and committee members are
unpaid volunteers.
The ERNC will hold elections this February to fill more than a dozen
term-ending and vacant seats. Please consider becoming a part of the ERNC and
working with us for the betterment of Eagle Rock. Please reply for more
information. If you have any questions
about the budget expenditures mentioned herein, please contact Treasurer Mark
Ryan at mryan@cadet.org.

WE’VE GOT MAIL
Dear TERA e.letter:
I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but there is a new
restaurant coming to town. It's located on Colorado and La Roda in the
strip mall next to Tommy's. It's called "Blue Hen" and
it's a Vietnamese restaurant.
There are currently two in Silverlake: Pho Cafe and
Ginger Grass, which are both very popular and very different catering to
the trendy crowd of Silverlake. Finally we will have our very own here in
Eagle Rock. I'm definitely very excited. I'm not sure when they are
planning to open but I have noticed construction underway. So, spread the
word!

Lee, Eagle Rock

17. THE FINAL WORD – ABRAHAM LINCOLN
“Honor to the Soldier, and Sailor everywhere, who bravely bears his
country’s cause. Honor also to the citizen who cares for his brother in the
field, and serves, as he best can, the same cause—honor
to him, only less than to him, who braves, for the common good, the storms of
heaven and the storms of battle.”
-- Abraham Lincoln
(1809–65); 16th U.S.
President, quoted from a letter written to U.S. soldiers in battle, 1863.
We remember our Veterans and brave men and women in the
armed forces today, Veteran’s Day!
