LETTERS AND E.MAILS

1.  TERA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE -- MICHAEL THARP

The days after…

It’s the day after the election to fill the vacated 14th Council District seat.  A winner has been declared and there are nine others who ran and did not win.  Not winning is always difficult, although winning certainly carries its burdens as well.  We in the 14th Council District, or CD 14 as it is more commonly known, owe all those who ran, the winner and those who did not win as well, a very hearty thank you.  I am especially appreciative of those candidates who took the time and trouble to attend TERA’s meet and greet public meeting and speak with community members on a one-on-one basis about their vision for CD 14 and what they were hoping to accomplish.  Hearing the candidates speak helped us form our views on what was important and helped us make a decision on how to cast our vote.

Now it’s time to get about the difficult task of governance; of trying to represent thousands of different points of view; of choosing what is good for the City of Los Angeles as well as CD 14.  For TERA, land use issues are still high on the watch list.  McMansions aren’t just limited to Beverly Hills!  It’s happening right here in Northeast Los Angeles.  Businesses continue to choose not to locate on Colorado or Eagle Rock Boulevards because of perceived parking issues.  Cell phone carriers continue to refuse to cooperate with each other and “co-locate” their antennae in order to reduce the number of towers necessary to adequately provide cell phone coverage for the area, while continuing to offer ugly structures behind which to hide their towers.  Opportunities for mixed use, public private developments that would provide more housing and commercial development opportunities go wanting, both for the lack of public support and the lack of private development interest.  So, the day after is a day for our new Councilmember elect to celebrate?  The days after will be for hard work, rolling up our sleeves to continue to build a better Eagle Rock.  TERA looks forward to working hard with Councilmember Huizar to build a better Eagle Rock.

It’s now also a few days after the Eagle Rock Eclectic Home Tour.  I hope most of you who are reading this got a chance to experience this year’s Home Tour.  I was a docent at the Center for the Arts Eagle Rock, which generously opened its doors to us from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. as part of the Tour.  And after I finished there, Carol and I grabbed lunch at one of Eagle Rock’s great restaurants and then “toured” the eclectic homes presented at this year’s event.  The homes were wonderful and the docents were knowledgeable and helpful.  I’ve always appreciated the Mount Royal area for the serene beauty of the streetscape, with huge trees that bridge the street, but I had not really appreciated how special so many of the homes are in that area.  TERA is deeply grateful to those home owners who let us show off their homes to all of you and a special thanks goes to the volunteers of the Home Tour Committee, the docents, and the volunteers who worked so hard to make the day such a great success.  If you missed it this year, catch the Tour next year.  It’s one of the greatest “feel good about living in Eagle Rock” events around and the art show is an added bonus.  In spite of the many things going on during the weekend, you do yourself a dis-service  to miss it.

And it’s now a few days after the previous editor left and I am responsible for the e-letter.  We are trying a new distribution system and will be making a few changes to the format of the e-letter over the next few weeks.  Unfortunately, due to electronic sophistication and our lack of it, some announcements may have gotten lost in the transfer of responsibility between Joanne and me.  If you don’t see your announcement or notice this week, and it is still timely, please send it in again.  I know the system is now working, but there may have been a break in communication between November 6th and November 8th.

8.  THE TOY NOT DRIVE

From: "Jennifer Murphy" <Truffula_Tuft@hotmail.com>

This Holiday season, Santa is bringing good cheer and presents sans the reindeer. How will he deliver toys to needy families? On a bicycle of course! And you can help -- join the Toy NOT Drive.

Gather on Saturday, November 12th at Noon.  Ride leaves promptly at 12:30 pm, Heritage Square/Arroyo Goldline Station

3545 Pasadena Avenue (one block south of N. Figueroa St.)

The family friendly ride will last about an hour and will be mostly flat and at a pace of about 7-10 miles per hour.

Participants are asked to bring gifts to be donated to the Hathaway Family Resource Center, where the ride will end. The mission of the Center is to support families in providing a safe and nurturing environment for their children. The Center does this by offering a variety of programs throughout the Northeast Los Angeles area.

Riders carrying teddy bears, basketballs, movie passes, DVDs and an assortment of gifts will cruise together in a celebration of

sustainable transportation, community, and best of all, giving to those in need. Wear your Santa hat (over your helmet, of course)!

For more information and the gift wish list, visit www.NELABikes.com

or call 323-478-1036.

LETTERS AND E.MAILS

Thanks, Joanne, for all that you have done to create this incredible community resource.  I had never heard of Eagle Rock before I moved here in early 1999 (i.e., before places like Swork, Fatty’s, and Camilo’s arrived on the scene), and I thought I had moved to the End of Civilization as I knew it.  I then discovered TERA and the e.letter, and I suddenly felt like I belonged to a real community, not just a long-forgotten corner of Los Angeles.   Thank you for all that you have done to make the e.letter such an important community resource.
