1. A MESSAGE FROM TERA PRESIDENT HILARY NORTON OROZCO -- WALGREENS
UPDATE
When I last updated you all, the focus group convened by Councilmember
Villaraigosa had completed its first meeting. Tab Johnson and Jim
Shuemaker of Rich Development, developers of the Walgreens site, were given
numerous suggestions of how to improve the overall appearance of the site and
parking lot. As I said in a previous e.letter, we thank the developers
for listening, and for Councilmember Villaraigosa for his leadership.
Architects (and TERA members) Tom Yang and Jeff Samudio then created a
beautiful new parking lot redesign and new design for the building facing
Colorado Boulevard, which incorporates new green space and reorients this front
commercial building (Walgreens would remain in the rear of the site, surrounded
by parking). The architects presented their design suggestion to the
working group and the developers at our second meeting under Councilmember
Villaragosa's lead. The developers stated that they would discuss these
new design concepts with Walgreens' corporate executives.
According to Councilmember Villaragosa's office, the developers have met with
Walgreens, and now Councilmember Villaraigosa will meet with these executives
to continue the efforts to make this new development an asset to the future of
Eagle Rock. Subsequent to this meeting, Antonio will convene the focus
group for a third time to discuss next steps. Thank you for all of the hard
work that everyone is putting toward making this site lovely, and most of all,
uniquely Eagle Rock.
Stay tuned!
--Hilary Norton Orozco
2. HALLOWEEN PARTY AND COSTUME CONTEST AT COLOMBO'S -- OCTOBER 31
Colombo's becomes Eagle Rock's prime site for celebratory revels this
October 31 when the popular restaurant stages a gala Halloween Party and
Costume Contest.
As you may know, the folks at Colombo's generously opened their parking lot to
help us handle the large influx of traffic generated by TERA's recent Eclectic
Eagle Rock Home Tour, and they later came through with two large tubs of
ice for the after-tour wrap party. So please consider dropping in to
Colombo's this Halloween to show your appreciation for their ongoing support of
our community.
For more information, call Colombo's at (323) 254-9138.

13. ARTIST'S CORNER: CALLS FOR SUBMISSION
Here's a quick survey of local gallery curators who are currently seeking
submissions from area artists:
Like food and water, the human
need for shelter is one of the most essential: to survive in this world, each
person requires a place where they can be protected from the elements; a place
where they can find warmth; a place where, if they are lucky, they are
surrounded by the love of family and friends. We create our shelters the
best we can some with the help of Pottery Barn catalogues, some with
cardboard boxes or mud bricks. At the core, however, is a retreat where
we go to seek comfort. Our shelter is our unique space where we
can take off our public masks and unleash our private selves. It is our
place to simply be.
Avenue 50 Studio in Northeast Los Angeles is seeking artists whose work
explores the concept of shelter in their own lives and in the greater
community. All mediums will be considered. Professional artists
will have their work installed in a show that will also include work by
homeless men and women, reinforcing the idea that shelter is a universal,
fundamental human need.
"Shelter" is being curated by Jennifer Rowland, formerly of
Gallery Figueroa. Please submit a jpeg of the piece for consideration to:
art@galleryfigueroa.com. You
may also submit a description of the piece along with jpegs of previous work.
Deadline for submissions is November 5, 2003. Selected work must
be delivered to the Studio by November 23, 2003. Avenue 50 Studio is
located at 131 N. Avenue 50 in Highland Park.
The show will run through December. Opening and closing dates to be
determined. Participating artists will be asked to contribute to the cost
of a postcard mailing. For more information, please email Jennifer
Rowland at redmangojr@aol.com.
Swork is always looking
for creative photographers who would like to share their work on our walls.
Drop Swork a line at 2160 Colorado Boulevard, Eagle Rock, CA 90041,
Attention: Tricia.
Swork is a popular coffee bar located at the crossroads of Eagle Rock, on the
southeast corner of Colorado Boulevard and Eagle Rock Boulevard.
The Center for the Arts, Eagle
Rock is currently accepting submissions for its annual Total Life Exhibition
in December. This exhibition is in recognition of World AIDS Day and
features work by artists living with HIV/AIDS. Artists living with
HIV/AIDS are encouraged to submit current work for review.
Total Life is a group show featuring 4 - 6 artists. Selected artists
will receive catalogues for the show and 100% of sales of artworks.
