1.      PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – AN AMAZING SUCCESS!

ECLECTIC EAGLE ROCK HOME TOUR – AN AMAZING SUCCESS!

I wanted to take the opportunity to thank all of TERA’s Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour’s volunteers, sponsors and committee members profusely for the tremendous job you did on this year's Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour!

Thank you so much for creating a Home Tour that was filled with heart, that exemplified the high standards of this community, and demonstrated to communities throughout the Northeast what a fabulous place Eagle Rock is to live.  Corky Retson's Home Tour posters are an absolutely fantastic reflection of all of these ideals.

At last night's after-party, Camilo and Amelia Gonzalez of Camilo's said that the restaurant was PACKED all day.  Michael Zamarripa of the Coffee Table came during the day and ran back to feed hungry customers. This Home Tour definitely increased the business activity in the community.  Many asked if we can do it every Sunday!

The GLAD building was a lovely starting point, and the Eagle Rock Valley Historical Society’s exhibit of Shulman photos gave a fitting reminder of Eagle Rock's special place in the history of Los Angeles.

It was clear to all who participated that the event could not have happened without the hard work of dedicated volunteers.  You all have provided crucial support for TERA and its mission.  Thank you all for your precious time and exceptional talent!

Thank you to all who showed their homes and who attended this year’s home tour!  We hope we will see you all again 2005!

10.     CHRISTMAS IN OCTOBER? – LAST CHANCE TO SUPPORT THE ERHS TENNIS TEAM!

Before you buy your Christmas greenery, consider ordering this month to support the ERHS Boys Tennis Team!  Eric Jacobson, ERHS Alumnus (Class of ‘89), Tennis Coach and Counselor needs our help!

Dear Friends of Eagle Rock:

I’m writing to ask for your help in supporting the Eagle Rock High School boys tennis team by pre-ordering a Christmas tree, wreath, or garland in the month of October or by sending a monetary donation.  Recently, our team’s school budget was decreased by one half, exerting extra pressure on all of our athletes to greatly increase their fundraising efforts.  Our team is raising money for two overnight trips (to see professional tennis at Indian Wells in March, and to train for city playoffs at the Big Bear Tennis Ranch in April).  Each team member needs to raise his own funds to pay for those two activities, as well as for his uniform, the banquet, and individual trophies.

This is our third year selling Christmas trees of three sizes (5-6 foot, 6-7 foot, and 7-8 foot) and of three varieties (Douglas, Grand, and Noble Fir), as well as two sizes of wreaths and garland.  Prices for trees are competitive with those of any fresh-tree lot ($34 and up), and the quality of the trees is guaranteed or your money back!  Small wreaths (24 inches in diameter) are $22, large wreaths (28 inches in diameter) are $27, and a 10-foot-long garland is $23.  Christmas tree stands (with and without water bowls) are a few dollars extra.  All trees are cut only TWO days before shipment to the school on December 10.  All trees will be delivered (at no cost if you live near Eagle Rock!) or need to be picked up from the horticulture area in the middle of campus on Saturday, December 11, between 9 am and 1 pm.

If you were planning to buy a live Christmas tree this year, please buy through us and receive a tree of the highest quality.  Simply complete the bottom section of the order form enclosed (on the back of the flyer), and send it to me at the address below.  Retain the top portion for your records.  Pre-orders are being taken in the month of October only, and a deposit of at least $20 per tree is due upon ordering.  Total payment is required for wreaths or garlands.

If you live far from ERHS or don’t plan to have a tree this season, please consider helping us with a donation (made out to “ERHS BOYS TENNIS”) which will go straight to one young, hard-working tennis player at our school.  I speak for all of the members of the #7-ranked Eagle Rock High School tennis team when I thank you tremendously for your support.  Please tell your friends and neighbors, too!

Please send your order or donation to:  EAGLE ROCK HIGH SCHOOL, c/o ERIC JACOBSON, 1750 YOSEMITE DR., LOS ANGELES, CA  90041 or call: (323) 254-6891 (x192) during the day or (323) 333-6967 any time to leave a message.

14.     EAGLE ROCK ELEMENTARY WINS NATIONAL AWARD! – CELEBRATE NOVEMBER 9TH!

LAUSD'S ONLY NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED SCHOOL FOR ACADEMIC AND STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IN 2004!
EAGLE ROCK ELEMENTARY (ERE) CELEBRATES IT'S SUCCESS
Tuesday, November 9, 2004
8:30 – 10 am
2057 Fair Park Avenue, Eagle Rock, CA 90041

LOS ANGELES -- Eagle Rock Elementary (ERE), will welcome back Principal Jane Sierra from a ceremony hosted by U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige in Washington D.C., with a day of celebration on Tuesday, November 9, 2004, from 8:30-10:00 a.m.

Local and state dignitaries, including Congressman Xavier Becerra, State Education Secretary Richard Riordan, State Senator Jack Scott, LAUSD Superintendent Governor Roy Romer and LAUSD Board of Education President Jose Huizar, along with the Eagle Rock community, will come together to honor the ERE students, teachers, parents and support staff that made this accomplishment possible.

ERE, located in N.E. Los Angeles, is one of 33 public schools in California, and 206 in the nation, to be chosen as a Blue Ribbon School for 2004. The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) -- Blue Ribbon School program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The 21 year old program encourages states to nominate public kindergarten through grade twelve schools that are either academically superior or demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement. ERE went through a rigorous application process. The weight of the application rested over-whelmingly on test scores, growth, and achievement in reading and math over three years, including those for significant subgroups.

"The educators and students in these schools, as well as the children's parents, deserve a lot of praise for working very hard to receive this national recognition," said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell. "This shows that our efforts to increase rigor in California schools is working, so students can receive a world-class education that will carry them through to college or careers." O'Connell nominated ERE last December for this federal recognition.

ERE’s Celebration of Learning will begin with the entrance of the Eagle Rock High School Marching Band parading through the streets of Eagle Rock from the high school to ERE. After-which, the school and Principal Sierra -- who also will be personally honored in D.C. as one of five principals in the country to receive the Terrel H. Bell Award for exceptional school leadership, will be recognized with praises and proclamations, as well as entertainment for all to enjoy. ERE is located at 2057 Fair Park Avenue, Los Angeles, CA. 90041, (323) 254-6851.

Congratulations Principal Sierra and Eagle Rock Elementary teachers, students and parents, for being a local and national model for education!  We all applaud you for this well-deserved honor!

17.     CAMILO’S CALIFORNIA BISTRO NAMED ONE OF 50 TOP HISPANIC OWNED RESTAURANTS BY HISPANIC MAGAZINE!

The October issue of Hispanic Magazine ran this rave review of Camilo’s California Bistro (and I agree with the ceviche martini being excellent!):

Camilo’s Bistro
Tucked away in the Eagle Rock area of Los Angeles, Camilo’s is all about fine dining and excellent service. You won’t find classic Latin American dishes here, rather the gourmet-inspired dishes of Colombian chef-owner Camilo Gonzales. The ceviche martini or prawn corn cake fritters make excellent starters, which can be followed by the tasty osso buco or red Thai curry red snapper. Desserts include Amelia’s apple (a baked apple in a crust) and the café flan. Beer and wine. 2128 Colorado Boulevard (323-478-2644). Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Tues.–Sat.; breakfast and lunch Sun. AE, D, MC, V. $$$.

Congratulations, Camilo and Amelia, for bringing national attention to the great restaurants in Eagle Rock!

Friends --

For those of you who are still trying to figure out the November 2nd ballot measures, I wanted to let you know that I've had the pleasure of hosting a pioneering new series aimed at bringing ballot information to voters via cable television and the Internet.  The new "Voter Minute" series offers concise summaries aimed at demystifying the statewide ballot measures (plus County Measure A) and is airing regularly on LA36 (Channel 36 on all cable systems in the City of Los Angeles) and on Channel 16 in the City of Santa Monica.

Better yet, the entire set of Voter Minutes is available 24 hours a day on the LA36 web site, www.la36.org.  This project is the debut of a new technology recently licensed by LA36 to manage streaming content on governmental information.  On-line viewers also see a transcript of each video, as well as additional resources and web links on each measure (Windows Media Player is required).

The nonpartisan Voter Minutes are a joint project of LA36 and the Center for Governmental Studies, a respected leader in political reform and community development.  I've enjoyed the opportunity to work once again with the terrific team at LA36, which was a great partner on the 17-part "Secession 101" series I hosted in 2002.

So, please pass this along as a resource to any undecided voters, or to any organizations that are disseminating election information between now and November 2nd.

21.     THE FINAL WORD – RUTHERFORD B. HAYES AND W.C. FIELDS

Two great quotes in honor of Election Day November 2nd!

“To vote is like the payment of a debt—a duty never to be neglected, if its performance is possible..”

--      Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893), 19th U.S. president (1877–1881).

“I never vote for anyone.  I always vote against.”

--      W. C. Fields (1879 – 1946), U.S. Screen Actor
