A collective, happy but tired sigh issued from dozens of lungs as
TERA’s 7th Annual Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour drew to a close at 4:00
p.m. on Sunday, October 15, 2006. The Tour, which is TERA’s primary fund
raiser, was a huge success. Except for a few sprinkles in the early
morning hours, the gods smiled upon us and while the sky was a bit gray
for most of the day, it was also cool. It was a good day to join close to
500 of our neighbors, wandering through 7 beautiful and vastly different
homes. We deeply appreciate the owners of these 7 fine homes who opened
them up to all of Eagle Rock. I know for me there is a sense of panic and
“must Clean” when a few friends are coming over for dinner. What must it
be like when over 400 “friends” are going to swing by to take a look? Many
thanks for all your hard work to host us. Our thanks also goes to
Councilmember Jose Huizar and his staff members, Frank Aguirre and Luis
Hernandez for arranging for the four shuttles that saved us from having to
climb the steep and narrow roads on which these wonderful homes were
located. The bus drivers were magnificent and no paint molecules were
exchanged or pedestrians maimed, in spite of the close quarters.
TERA’s Home Tour Committee, which runs the Home Tour, has one more
meeting this year, at which time it will discuss what went right and what
could have gone better with the Tour in order to create a still better
Home Tour next year. The Committee will start meeting again, probably some
time in March, to plan for next year’s Tour, which for those of you who
are inclined to plan ahead, will be on Sunday, October 14, 2007. If your
interested in volunteering in some capacity, please contact us by writing
the e- Letter or talking to a TERA member in your neighborhood. It’s good
to be a member. It’s a lot more fun to participate as a member so be ready
to be a part of next year’s Eclectic Eagle Rock Home Tour when spring
rolls around. I’ll report further on this year’s Home Tour in next week’s
edition, when we have a better accounting of the total number of ticket
sales.
Another interesting way to spend last Saturday was lifting sandbags out
of a hole with a bunch of other volunteers, helping David and Helen
Gustavson prepare to tilt the “Welcome to Eagle Rock, Home of Occidental
College” monument upright and concrete poured around the base. Showing
that I have gained some small amount of wisdom with some great amount of
years, I declined the honor of jumping in the hole to lift sandbags out,
choosing instead to be part of the human chain passing the sandbags. Even
this was enough to remind me the next morning that I haven’t been going to
the gym nearly enough. But the monument, in the shape of the Eagle Rock,
looked great as it was unveiled briefly, before being recovered to allow
the concrete base to properly cure. Congratulations to David and Helen
Gustavson for all of their hard work and sacrifice, as well as to Bill
Stutz for his design. And thanks to the many volunteers who worked with
Dave and Helen in making this possible. Keep your eyes peeled for the
final unveiling of the monument, located at Wiota Circle, just to the west
and north of the Colorado Boulevard off-ramp of the westbound 134 Freeway.

Make your reservations now for two special shows at SW Hill Country:
November 11: All the way from Nashville, Bob Cheevers has earned
a place in the landscape now called Americana Music having charted Top 20
with his last two CDs. Bob grew up in Memphis and got a soul full of music
not only from the icons of his youth such as Elvis and Johnny Cash but
also from his mother, who was a radio star during the Great Depression.
From an early age, Bob's creative feet were firmly planted in Mississippi
Delta mud, and his songs began to feature characters whose lives reflected
the life style along the rivers of the South over the past hundred years.
After moving to Nashville, Bob organized and hosted a yearly benefit
series of shows at The Bluebird Cafe for Nashville¹s Alive Hospice
Organization featuring Nashville¹s most famous writers, artists and
performers. Now in its second decade, it's still The Bluebird¹s most
popular series. As a seasoned songwriter and performer, Bob has found his
own voice spinning rootsy, blues-flavored tales of the Delta in
conversational language of the heart. www.bobcheev

December 2: Santa Cruz River Band, Ted Ramírez, Michael Ronstadt
(Linda’s brother), Gilbert Brown compose a professional touring concert
group from Tucson, Arizona – the trio performs in English, Spanish and
American Indian languages. They present a beautiful, intriguing and
powerful musical program filled with history and the mystical lore of the
Great American Southwest. Their music is authentic and original in every
way as it is rooted in the traditional music styles of the United States
and Mexico. They create a uniquely beautiful sound with outstanding vocals
harmonies and powerful acoustic. www.santacruzriverband.com Opening is
Joan Enguita, a folk/americana songstress in the modern tradition, Joan is
revered for her voice and loved for her original touching and heartfelt
songs. People stop what they are doing to find that voice! Then they stay
to hear the songs. www.joanenguita

The buzz these days is that lots of folks are bummed out because KZLA
is gone. We hear from a reliable source, that something’s in the works to
bring back a country station. We’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, to
get your dose of country, tune in to Cowboy Nick’s Radio Show, TWANG, on
88.5 fm KCSN, Saturdays, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. He plays classic country and
mixes in lots of interesting information. On Sundays, 11:00 am to 1:00 pm,
listen to Watusi Rodeo hosted by Chris Morris on Indie 103.1. Chris plays
classic and alt/country and always has special musical guests. Our good
friend, David Serby was recently a guest. The interview and the music were
so outstanding and will go down in the LA alt/country scene as a classic.
Chris showcased Dave’s talent as a singer and as a powerful songwriter. To

LETTERS |
 |
From Cheryl Leutjen:
“Big kudos to whomever thought of (and all those who made it happen)
closing Colorado Boulevard for the Music Festival. I loved having the
freedom to roam the streets, especially with two young children in tow. In
prior years, I always had to keep close eye on the kids, so they wouldn’t
wander out into Colorado Blvd., where cars would whiz past at top speed.
This year, I could really relax and enjoy all of the very FABULOUS music!”
I couldn't agree more! Thanks to the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock
and all those who made such a great festival possible!
------------------------------------------
Subject: Walking and Dogs
Eagle Rock is a great place to walk and many of our residents do just
that on a daily basis, and some of us also take our dogs when we walk.
Most of us love dogs, big dogs, little dogs, your dog, and my dog. BUT
none of us likes what our dogs put on peoples lawn, parkways, and yes,
even on the side walks and owners do not bother to remove what their dogs
leave for others to step over, step on and/or clean up after after dog
walkers pass by. Dogs will be dogs and territory marking is what they do,
but as responsible owners it is our responsibility to clean up after them.
I love my dog and I want my neighbors to love her too, soooooooooooo I
always clean up after her when we are walking just like we do our own
backyard. Eagle Rock is our backyard only on a larger scale. Dog walkers,
please clean up after your dog.
Long time resident and dog lover,
m-pmoren
There are still a few inconsiderate and ignorant souls who do not
pick up after their dogs, for whom I carry a few extra plastic bags, which
I give to them in moments of need along with "strong encouragement" to do
the right thing. Equally as distressing are those who simply let their
dogs out the front door, unaccompanied, causing a hazard for neighbors,
walkers, joggers, drivers, and the poor dogs themselves. And then there
are those trusting souls who let their dogs off leash, letting them run
free and out of control, and when the dog ignores their shouted pleas to
"Come!", holler out, "Don't worry, he's friendly!", oblivious to the fact
that my pack of 4 aren't the least bit worried and aren't very friendly.
So, if you are lucky enough to have a dog (s), walk them regularly, and
unless they are exceptionally well trained, keep them on leash; take them
to designated dog parks to let them run free; always pick up after them;
and keep them safe! Hmmm, didn't I say we were done with discussions of
dogs in an e-letter a week or so ago?
