1.  THIRD ANNUAL EAGLE ROCK MUSIC FESTIVAL! -- THIS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13

This is truly one of our town's most fun events!  Don't miss it!

THE THIRD ANNUAL EAGLE ROCK MUSIC FESTIVAL IS THIS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13, 6:00 P.M. to 12:30 A.M.  Come to the Eagle Rock Community Cultural Center at 2225 Colorado Blvd. at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13. Hear old standards and the piano stylings of Spencer Day. At 8:00 p.m. stay for the Zydeco/Cajun group Benny and the Swamp Gators or hit the streets, either on foot or shuttle bus.

Some of the highlights of this year's Festival include The Jumpin' Jos Swing Band and Jazz Quintet at SWORK, Tony and the Hodads - Oldies at Jim's Burgers, and many, many more.  At 10:30 come back to the Cultural Center for the Latin rhythms of Brasil, Brazil!

Don't miss this incredible opportunity to socialize and swing with your friends and neighbors in what we think is one of the most fun events you'll ever attend. Don't forget, the whole thing is 100% FREE!

The Festival is made possible through the generosity of Council Member Nick Pacheco, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. We hope to see each and everyone of you on the 13th!

2.  PARENT FEEDBACK NEEDED ON HOMEWORK WEB SITE

To parents of all Eagle Rock schools:  Please visit this site:  http://www.thehomeworkspot.com/forms/msg2p.htm

Anne Richardson-Daniel, developer of the above Web site that is here to help both kids and parents with homework assignments, needs some parent feedback regarding the site.  She's talking to all local school principals now, but she would like to talk to them only when armed with feedback from parents, who generally have been very positive about the idea.  It would help greatly if Anne were to see some hard data on it!

4.  MACH 1 RIDE-A-THON -- OCTOBER 24

MACH 1 Fundraiser!

MACH 1 (Move a Child Higher) is a non-profit, 501c(3) therapeutic horseback riding program for mentally and physically handicapped children based at Flintridge Riding Club in La Canada Flintridge.  Founded five years ago by Joy Rittenhouse, it is part of a nationwide network of 500 MACH 1 programs.  It is run in conjunction with Pasadena's city recreation programs and is a member of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA).

Hippotherapy (therapy using horses) has been widely recognized as beneficial since World War II, when polio struck many children.  Many of the benefits of the therapy include improved motor coordination, muscle development, attention span, task sequencing, confidence, and social skills.  Children who have shown little progress in traditional physical therapy often make significant gains when paired with a horse.

All students are evaluated by physical and occupational therapists and then put on a tailored program of riding and games designed to promote cognitive and physical development.  When on horseback, students are attended by an instructor leading the horse and side walkers.  The children develop a special relationship with the horse, which, in turn, provides motivation to stick with the therapy for years.

MACH 1's success is due to its dedicated volunteers.  They not only provide support during the lessons, but also care for the horses, write publicity materials, help with administration, provide facility support (such as building special mounting blocks and game apparatus), and work on fundraising.  Which brings us to-

The MACH 1 Ride-A-Thon on October 24 is a fundraising event.  It operates like walk-a-thon participants that obtain financial sponsors for guided trail riding.  MACH 1 students also participate by giving demonstration rides.  This event is one of two fundraisers during the year.  In the spring, the students put on a show followed by a dinner and silent auction.  In the fall, there is the Ride-A-Thon and a lunch.  All proceeds go to MACH 1's operating budget.

There are four ways to participate in the Ride-A-Thon:

1) Sponsor a rider or give a straight donation -- any amount is welcome;

2) Be a trail rider and obtain your own sponsors;

3) Buy raffle tickets for a 90-minute helicopter ride for three with the Pasadena police (this is not just a fly-by, but a real "ride-along") -- $5 a ticket or $20 for 5 tickets; or

4) Come to the event, see the children ride, and buy lunch -- $10/adult and $5/child.

The Ride-A-Thon will be held Sunday, October 24, at the Rose Bowl Riders facility, Hahamonga Watershed Park (by the fire station near JPL).  Coffee and donuts will be available at 8:00am, trail riders head out at 9:00am, and lunch will be served around noon.  The MACH 1 students will give demonstration rides throughout the morning.

For more information about the Ride-A-Thon or to donate please contact:

Ellen Narver at 323-259-9903 or elneln@aol.com, or MACH 1 at 626-798-1222

Visit the website at http://www.moveachildhigher.org or call 626-798-1222 for more information about the MACH 1 program or about volunteering.

Hope to see you at the Ride-A-Thon!

5.  BOWLING FOR DOLLARS AND A GOOD CAUSE -- OCTOBER 27

This is in from friend and former Eagle Rock field deputy Ruby de Vera:

On October 27, 2001 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., All Star Lanes, 4459 Eagle Rock Boulevard, the Northeast Democratic Club will hold a fundraising drive to assist the victims of the 9/11 tragedy.  Similar to Bowling for Dollars, the proceeds will benefit a labor union in New York in their efforts to assist members who have lost their jobs.

In order to cover costs, each bowler needs at least $0.50 in per pin pledges.  If you are not a bowler but would like to help with this cause, please forward your donations to the Northeast Democratic Club, 9/11 Tragedy Fund, P. O. Box 50674, Los Angeles, CA 90050-0674.  For more information, contact John Gallogly, Event Coordinator at (323) 254-2717.  Let's Go Bowling for a Cause!

8.  NO CUTE ACRONYM -- PHOTOGRAPHER GROUP FORMING

Are you tired of working alone?  A new group, Photographers Sick of Working in Isolation (PSWI), is currently being organized, and had its first meeting on Sunday evening July 29th.   Our goal is to create a small but steady group of working photographers to meet twice a month and discuss photography in a fine arts context.  We will talk about our work related ideas and goals, as well as get feedback from each other on our current work and issues related to getting it completed.  Meetings will be held in the downtown and northeast sections of Los Angeles.

Interested?  Please call Lorena (626) 330-9844 or Mary-Linn (323) 257-0444 for details and meeting location and time.

10.  LETTERS AND E.MAILS

"September 11, 2001

Dear Joanne and Board,

I, too, am just horrified by the destruction in New York this morning.  I called my father across the river in New Jersey and just held him on the phone with me for more than an hour as we watched television reports together.  He did that with me during the 1994 Northridge earthquake.  Somehow, this feels worse than that.

My Dad and I both agreed that when we hung up, we would continue with our plans for our day today.  We cannot allow terrorism to scare us away from living or away from responding.  This is another day that '...will live in infamy.'

I, too, imagined tonight's TERA meeting beginning with praying together and whether or not Nick is able to come, eating the food offering together.  That's Community.  The idea of inviting a representative from the Red Cross is also a great idea.

I am going to my class tonight as usual and I am sorry I will not be joining all of you at our public meeting.  God Bless us all whatever we do.

With a heavy heart --"

-- Kathleen Long, long-time Eagle Rock resident, founding TERA Board member, and current TERA Board member

"Hello -- thank you for sending this [TERA e.letter Special Edition of 9/13/01]."

-- Ray Patel, Eagle Rock business owner and Collaborative Eagle Rock Beautiful participant

"Thanks for this update.  We are flying our flag and tonight [9/14/01] we will be lighting our candles.

Is there anything we can do as a community to help Mr. Ornedo's family?  We are all, as Americans, affected by this, and the fact that it happened to one of our own here in Eagle Rock compels us to respond more directly.

Thank you for your continued e-mails.  We pray for the safety and peace of our community and our country."

-- Peter and Brooke Romano, Eagle Rock residents, neighbors, and TERA members

"Thank you so much for the moving and responsible reporting in your special edition of the TERA e.letter. The article for Asia Week carries an important perspective, and a courageous one to be articulated in a time when retaliation on the largest scale becomes the accepted human response. There is a moral vision which goes beyond declarations of war, and I am glad to see that expressed. What has tragically happened is that we have been caught in humanity's constant race against barbarism and terror; a race which affects peoples trapped in civil war, border and interethnic disputes all over the world.

Our pain is our pain first and foremost, but it is also the pain of the world already being endured in many other places.  Somewhere down the road, we must ask how we can share ourselves with the world -- not for cheap markets and commercial enterprise -- but for human dignity and resource sharing.  International war will put us far behind in that endeavor, for which this present tragedy is an unwitting and horrific wake-up call.

The question isn't 'how dare you do this to us?' But 'how dare this happen to anyone?' Will we be able to remember that once our own healing has begun?"

-- Alan Scarfe, pastor, St. Barnabas' Episcopal Church, and Eagle Rock resident

"Hope as time goes on, something to honor this fellow Eagle Rocker [Ruben Ornedo] will get discussed. Maybe a fund to donate to his widow and expected child?

Even though it was a sad topic, I appreciated the special edition.  Thanks for thinking of it and putting it together."

-- MeHee Hyuan, fourth-generation Eagle Rocker [and whose son is the fifth generation to live in the same house on Dahlia Drive]
