  • The winds of change are starting to gently blow through Eagle Rock, gently rustling feelings of complacency left from the recent holidays. It will be interesting to see if these changes develop into force 5 gales, powerful and destructive, or if they result only in merry, mischievous little breezes, that ruffle some feathers but fail to ignite full blown outrage.

One of the changes that went into effect was the implementation of "Red Flag Days". With the dry winds that blew through Eagle Rock for the last few days, we experienced our first "Red Flag Days". Fortunately, no fires accompanied 50 mile an hour wind gusts. Tom Topping provides an excellent discussion of the history and meaning of the Red Flag Days in the Boulevard Sentinel which is available at local businesses and on-line. It is highly recommended reading.

Another pending change is the proposal for a parking district along Colorado Boulevard. TERA's Preservation, Planning and Development Committee was given a preview of this proactive proposal to help alleviate parking problems before they become terminal for businesses and residents alike. This matter was discussed at TERA's Preservation, Planning and Development Committee last week and is on the agenda for the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council Land Use and Planning Committee on Thursday night, January 26, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at Eagle Rock City Hall. More details are provided below by the ERNC. This is the beginning of an important discussion and potential action that might have Citywide impacts. And it's starting right here in Eagle Rock.

A message was left on the TERA phone last week from a concerned patron of the Westfield Shopping Town, suggesting a change. This patron is a bus rider, like many of the shoppers at Westfield, and suggests that an easy means of pedestrian access to the mall be implemented. A means of access that does not conflict with vehicle traffic is needed. Too many times mall patrons are endangered by motorists as they walk in the driveways with no sidewalks in order to get into the mall. The Community should support our friends at Westfield in constructing safe pedestrian access from the sidewalk into their mall, rather than risking tragedy by being forced to access the mall by driveways, putting them in harms way.

So, let's pay attention to what changes the winds are blowing our way and let's be pro-active rather than simply reactive so that we can be the agents of positive changes rather than simply fighting against the inevitable or standing in the path of progress.

IMANI WINDS TO PERFORM AT OCCIDENTAL COLLEGE FEB. 3

Imani Winds, the Grammy nominated wind quintet known for exploring the links between European, African and American music traditions, will perform at Occidental College on Friday, Feb. 3. The concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Occidental's Herrick Chapel.

General admission tickets are $10 ($5 for students and seniors) and will be sold at the door. The college is located at 1600 Campus Road in Eagle Rock. For directions and a campus map, please go to http://www.oxy.edu/MapsDirections.xml.

Imani Winds' commitment to the expansion and diversification of the wind quintet repertoire means that in addition to playing classical masterpieces, the group also performs the work of lesser known composers such as Paquito D'Rivera, Tania Leon and Fred Ho. "Imani Winds represents nothing less than the future of the once-quaint notion of the wind quintet," wrote the Washington Post.

The group was nominated for a 2006 Grammy Award in the "Best Classical Crossover Album" category for "The Classical Underground," its first commercially released recording.

The five musicians formed Imani Winds in 1997 and have since adopted new textures and sounds by employing folk influences and percussive elements. In their time together, group members have established a distinct presence in the classical music world for dynamic playing, innovative programming, and inspirational outreach programs, which they have brought to communities throughout the country.

Group members include Marian Adam, clarinet; Valerie Coleman, flute; Monica Ellis, bassoon; Jeff Scott, French horn; and Toyin Spellman-Diaz, oboe. For more information on Imani Winds, go to the group's Web site at www.imaniwinds.c om.
