7Happy BirthdayJanet and Rob Kropp |
Please join Rob and Janet Kropp for a special dinner celebrating the 100th birthday of their home. The wonderful craftsman house looks much as it did when it was built in 1910, and that’s the way the Kropps like it. Since they moved there in 1980, they have gradually and carefully introduced all the modern conveniences into their home, while respecting its extraordinary traditional beauty. There is an honesty, simplicity, and warmth in craftsman architecture. You will experience those feelings at Rob and Janet’s home. In addition, there is always a healthy exchange of ideas. Could this be attributed to the fact that they are both attorneys? If you are a vegetarian, this might be the home for you since Rob is a vegetarian. However, Janet always ensures that all tastes will be satisfied, including non-vegetarians. Ceramics and yoga are two of Janet’s passions. Geocaching, whatever that is, is a special hobby that Rob loves and will be delighted to explain to anyone who might be interested. Lastly, they love to travel. Take a step back in time; dine with Rob and Janet and celebrate the beauty of an Eagle Rock architectural treasure. |

8High in the HillsSara Jane and John Thies |
“We have a passion for people and a passion for food. They come together when we have dinner guests,” was John Thies’ reply, when asked why he and his wife Sara Jane love to entertain so much. Thus, spirited conversation, cooking, and dining with friends happens quite often at their home. Theirs is a light, bright, and contemporary house, located high in the hills with an excellent view to the San Gabriel Mountains. The open plan of their home sets the stage for California Casual entertaining. Your evening will begin with a glass of wine on the deck looking down on the lights of Eagle Rock. If you like to know what’s going on in the kitchen, drift inside and say hi to the chef. The kitchen is not “off-limits.” Soon you will be seated for a satisfying dinner of good food, excellent wine and rich conversation. John’s passions include golf, music, good food, and an occasional evening at Colombo’s. Sara Jane is deeply involved in outreach programs to the under-privileged. Expect them both to tell you how much they enjoy being grandparents. |

9Five PalmsDennis / Schlueter Home |
A 1933 Spanish Colonial mansion on an expansive, rolling lawn anchors Hill Drive’s west end. At first glance, it seems more 90210 than 90041. Yet the home of Damon Dennis and Michael Schlueter is a classic beauty that has been cherished by a succession of smitten owners, brimming with original character and neighborly charm. In that sense, it’s pure Eagle Rock. You’ll first enter a welcoming foyer that features an original chandelier, a telephone nook, and small stained-glass windows set below a 20-foot ceiling. You’ll then join the hosts for champagne and cheese in the formal dining room and adjoining sitting area, with a roaring fire and a sweeping view of the neighborhood below. Next, you’ll move to the front patio for a sit-down dinner under the stars. Adding to the timeless atmosphere, entrees, wine and dessert will be served by Colombo’s, locally revered for great steaks, pasta and Italian American cuisine for 55 years. Tents and heaters will be on standby to ensure your comfort. Guests should wear cocktail attire and be ready to enjoy great food and conversation. Be prepared to navigate the many stairs of this hillside home, from the street, to the door and even to the restroom. |

11Arabian Nights Maria Nazario |
After spending the last two years lovingly remodeling her 1948 bungalow, former TERA President Maria Nazario invites you over to enjoy a traditional Middle Eastern feast. Dinner will be served in the back yard, also newly redesigned with year-round entertaining in mind. The cuisine will be traditional Lebanese fare, and will include some of Maria’s favorite family recipes, as well as a signature cocktail. Maria travels regularly for her work as an executive with the California Society of CPAs, and has traveled around the world, both during her childhood, and while working in Disaster Relief with the American Red Cross. With all that moving around, Maria has come to believe that home should be like a vacation - the place you come to for peace and relaxation. Her casually elegant (and dog-friendly) home is tastefully decorated with artifacts from her past, souvenirs from her travels and paintings from some of her favorite Eagle Rock artists. It’s an ideal environment for entertaining friends, both old and new. |

Architect Tom Yang, a native Eagle Rocker and graduate of Eagle Rock High, grew up on Neola Street, just a stone’s throw from the custom home he created on a west-facing bluff in 1997. Yang’s father had owned the lot since 1974 and sold it to his son for the same $8,000 he paid. Inspired in turn by UCLA’s Royce Hall (Yang managed the iconic theatre’s retrofit and restoration in the 1990s) and architect Irving Gill, the home has simple lines, a soaring gallery with heavy walls, floor-to-ceiling windows, interior archways and a unique ceiling, layered with red oak and stained chipboard. The living room opens to a generous wooden deck sheltered by tall pines. Visitors come up two sets of stairs, flanked by landscaping planted by neighbor Miri Day Hindes. “This house is a perfect reflection of Tom,” remarks wife Janet, a psychologist. “Simple, unassuming materials used in sophisticated ways; a thoughtful mix of openness and privacy.” She adds: “Overall, it’s a perfect party house, especially for TERA’s purpose: to welcome new friends who share our love of Eagle Rock and its strong sense of community.” The Yangs will serve a pan-Mediterranean feast, with complementary wine. |
