Country English – Herbs Included

Angelo / May

Dinner prepared by a self-taught gourmet cook and served to you in a postcard perfect home: that will be your dining experience at John Angelo and Dick May’s home.

The wrought iron fence, the garden that surrounds the river rock and gravel walkway, the long, sloped roof embraced by well established greenery, and the luxury of being situated in the middle of a double lot make this truly a perfect Country English Cottage right here in Eagle Rock. Originally, a professor from Occidental College occupied the home, but for the last 24 years John Angelo and Dick May have lived in, and loved, this house.  The interior décor is a homey mix of the things they both like and that they have collected over years of traveling together. The house feels bright and airy, with an emphasis on comfort.

Practice makes perfect, and their passion for entertaining over the years has made John and Dick the consummate hosts, and has also allowed Dick to become an accomplished cook. Get ready for an evening of fine Continental dining served in a warm and casual atmosphere at John and Dick’s home.

Entertainment Central

Burt / De La Cruz

“Don’t judge a book by its cover” is an apt metaphor for this home. The modest street presence of this home gives no hint of the spaciousness of this residence. Clinging to the hillside, this three-story home offers spectacular views on every level.

The design of the home provides evidence of the importance of entertaining to the owners, Dr. Randy Burt, an optometrist and Eric De La Cruz, a manager in the financial industry. Warm wood tones take you from the entry to the large living room, with a floor to ceiling fireplace of granite and glass. This room and the adjacent balcony offer some of the best views in Eagle Rock. Two levels lower is the party room. With plenty of seating, access to another outside balcony, a fireplace, flat screen TV, and a full service bar, this is truly Entertainment Central.

Dinner will be served in the dining room that literally floats above the living room. Although the home is contemporary, the soaring ceilings and double chandeliers bring a stately feeling to the dining room. Choose this home and you will experience an evening of great food, good conversation and the warmest hospitality.

Bling Bling Encouraged

Maedale Gongora

When this house was built, it looked out on the Annandale golf course. Thirty-eight years ago, when the house was only 18 months old, it was moved to make way for the 134 Freeway, to its present location, the last available lot on Hill Drive. A year and a half later Maedale Gongora and her family moved in.

Country club living, with the emphasis on entertaining, is evident in the design of the home. The décor is light, airy and traditional, with the use of rich colors throughout. The clubroom contains a sunken bar and wrap around windows opening to a patio across the front of the house.  Over the years, this has been the perfect setting for birthdays, cocktail parties, and virtually any other idea for people to gather and have fun.

Wallflowers need not apply here. Maedale has been the president of Toastmasters International for several terms. Her bubbly personality makes her a natural for the position. To kick-start dinner conversation, Maedale, who loves jewelry, invites ladies and gentlemen alike to wear a favorite piece of “bling” and to share the story of that special treasure with the other guests.

A View From the Top
Gotham / Manuel

It’s a Southern California Ranch but you would never know it once you enter the front door.

The Asian-inspired entry courtyard is the first hint that this home will be a visual treat.  As you enter the home, art is everywhere. Every painting, tapestry, lithograph, photo, woodblock print, etc. has a story. Many pieces are tokens of trips taken. The décor is further enriched by the bold use of color, Oriental carpets and antiques. Although you are surrounded by art, this is a home for living.

Bob Gotham, TERA President, and his partner Mike Manuel’s home is located high on a hilltop. The rear "yard" is an elevated deck with a wonderful view of downtown Los Angeles in the distance. With crannies for conversation, as well as observing, the deck will provide our starting point for dinner, weather permitting.

From the pre-dinner drinks on the deck, diners will move indoors to sit around a Tudor Renaissance table built in the mid 1800’s. Robust conversation is promised. After dinner, coffee will be served in the living room where guests may caress the keys of the grand piano.

Choose Bob and Mike’s home if you enjoy dining in a traditional décor in a Southern California setting.
